In the American family the husband and wife usually share important decision making. When the children are old enough, they take part as well. Foreigners are often surprised by the permissiveness(寬容) of American parents. The old rule that “children should be seen and not heard” is rarely21 , and children are often allowed to do what they wish without strict control of their parents. The father seldom expects his children to listen to him without22, and children are encouraged to be23at an early age. Some people believe that American parents carry this freedom 24 far. Others think that a strong father image would not
25the American values of equality and independence. Because Americans emphasize the importance of independence, young people are expected to 26 their parental families by the time they have reached their late teens or early twenties. Indeed, not to do so is often regarded as a 27, a kind of weak dependence.
This pattern of independence often results in serious 28 for the aging parents of a small family. The average American is expected to live beyond the age of 70. The job-retirement age is2965. The reading passages which follow are all of an average level of difficulty for your stage of instruction. They are all about five hundred words in 31 (long). They are about topics of general interest 32do not require a great deal of specialized knowledge. Thus they fall between the kind of reading you might find in your textbooks 33 the much less demanding kind you will find in a newspaper or light novel. 34 you read this kind of English, with understanding at four hundred words per minute, you might skim(瀏覽)through a newspaper at perhaps 650—700,35with a difficult textbook you might drop to two hundred or two hundred and fifty.
Perhaps you feel like 36 (know)what reading speeds are common among native English-speaking university students and how those speeds can
37(improve). Tests in Minnesota, USA, for example,
38(show)that students without special training can read English of average difficulty, for example, Tolstoy’s War and Peace in translation, at speeds of between 240 and 250 words per minute with about seventy percent
39(comprehensive) in materials. Students in Minnesota claim that after twelve half-hour lessons, once a week, the reading speed can be increased, with no 40 (lose) of understanding, to around five hundred words per minute.

Japanese students work very hard but many are unhappy. They feel heavy pressures from their parents to do well in school. Most students are always being told by their parents to study harder so that they can have a wonderful life. Though this may be good ideas for those very bright students, it can have terrible results for many students because they are not gifted enough.
As it is reported, a number of students killed themselves. Others try to get the feeling of taking drugs. Some join the groups of trouble-makers and turn to crime. Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in the exams and have their parents lose hopes. Such students felt that they are hated by everyone else they meet and they don’t want to go to school any longer. They become dropouts.
It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teachers’ work to help their children. To make matters worse, a lot of parents send their children to those school opening in the evenings and weekends --- they only help students to pass exams and never teach students any real sense of the world. It is a great surprise that almost three-quarters of middle school students have been to such kind of schools.
Many Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students’ hair to their clothes and the things in their school bags. Child psychologists now think that such strict rules are harmful to the feelings of the students. Almost 40% of the students said that no one had taught them how to get on with others, how to tell right from wrong, how to show love for others, even for their parents.

In tomorrow’s offices, there will be more bosses and fewer assistants. New technologies have made clerical work so efficient that fewer workers are necessary, so one assistant may serve several bosses.
Bosses in the United States are spending twice as much time resolving employee disputes as they did just a decade ago. Corporate downsizing has made workers more insecure and competitive, increasing the number of personality conflicts that managers are forced to settle.
Fighting age bias(偏見) may be a critical workplace issue of the future. As companies depend on older, more experienced workers to solve labor shortages in the next century, managers will need to overcome the view that older workers are less productive, less flexible, and more expensive.
Electronic networking will give more power to workers at the bottom of the corporate pecking order(等級排序). Computer networks allow employees to skip over chains of command and communicate directly with senior managers. The relative anonymity (匿名) of electronic communications will make low-status
individuals more relaxed about expressing their points of view and offering valuable new ideas.

Whether your definition of a good vacation is lying on the beach or exploring the wonderful ruins of the lost Maya civilization, the Maya Riviera has you covered.
Sit and eat a delicious fish dinner under the shade of a palm tree at a hard-to-find seaside restaurant. Stay in a Spanish colonial hotel with 18-foot ceilings and walls more than one foot thick. Hang a hammock (吊床) in a 200-year-old hacienda (莊園) where time has stood still, or sleep in beachfront cottages so close to the Caribbean that the waves lap gently against the front porch. Enjoy white sandy beaches and turquoise seas, or be thrilled by miles of unbroken rainforest.
It’s a countryside full of the past including magnificent ruined Mayan cities with temples, ball courts and giant pyramids. Follow us to these deserted antiquarian (古文物研究的) sites.
The Yucatan is also a nature lover’s heaven. Float down a forgotten stream. Dive into the warm Lagoon of Seven Colors, where the Maya believed the rainbow began. Bike or hike for hours along a shell-covered coastline. Pilot a boat to a deserted island to see the wild capybara (水豚) or sail to an island bird shelter.
Shop in local markets and rub shoulders with Maya women in old dresses. Interested in traditional crafts such as hammocks, woodcarvings and pottery?See them being made in villages off the beaten trail. At the door before going out, I turned back and said, “What’s more, I need a computer. It is quite helpful for college students.” But the reply was so disappointing. “There’s no need, son,” said my parents with one voice. “Maybe you can find something else to entertain yourself other than computer games and surfing on the Internet,” said Mom. I left without words. Actually in my mind, I said to myself, “Is it?” Indeed, computers were likely to become addicts to youngsters, but they had many other uses, including editing theories, doing fine art designs, searching for information, and the like, which could be done quickly and conveniently. Even in some special subjects, computers had become basic instruments.
However, their worries were reasonable. Usually a young guy living apart from parents in the college had a lot to learn, one of which was to control oneself. Sometimes that was difficult in computers, for the world in the screen was too complicated to keep clear enough to tell right and wrong apart.

基礎寫作
According to the situation that most students feel anxious and nervous before the annual university entrance examination, Guangzhou Communist Youth League Committee has set up hotline 12355 to relieve the pressure for high school graduates. The hotline has drawn both students’ and parents’ attention; moreover, over 100 calls for consulting have been received within the first two days after its establishment. 90% of the calls were related to the concern on the anxiety and proper psychological adjustment before the exam. Experts point out that students should not relieve their pressure to excess. Specifically, rather than ignoring review completely, students had better spend certain amount of time appropriately chatting with their families, taking a walk, jogging, or listening to music; on the other hand, it is inappropriate for them to have intensive sports or to play computer games.
讀寫任務
No Computers
In the passage the author has described a problem he faced that his parents didn’t approve of bringing a computer with him to the college, which is a common phenomenon among college students.
However, whether to let students take computers to school calls for serious consideration, and in my opinion I think it acceptable. The main reason is the convenience computers can offer to them, such as doing works, editing surveys, collecting news, and so on. Dangerous as it is on the Internet, which sometimes makes students too addicted to go on with their study, they can avoid that by controlling themselves in time and spirit spent on it. Maybe the best solution is to have a detailed plan of everything to be done and stick to it.
Generally, the computer is not only a tool of recreation, but a powerful assistant in study and work as well. Only when used in a proper way can it provide us with perfect services.
