A (Being blamed for causing the famine with his “happy feet”, Mumble is asked to leave his parents.)
Penguin Leader: You, Mumble Happy Feet, must go.
Mom: Don’t you take one step, sweetheart. You have as much right to be here as any of these daffy old fools.
Dad: Norma Jean, I’ll deal with this.
Mumble: Pa?
Dad: Mumble, you must renounce your so-called friends...your peculiar thoughts, your strange ways.
Mom: Memphis!
Dad: If we are devout...sincere in our praise, the fish will return.
Mumble: But, Pa...
Dad: Listen, boy, ①I was a backslider myself. I was careless and now we’re paying the price.
Mom: What’s this got to do with Mumble?
Dad: It’s why he is the way he is.
Mom: But there’s nothing wrong with him!
Dad: Face it, Norma Jean, ②our son’s all messed up.
Mom: He’s not messed up, you hear me?
Dad: Believe me, I know he is.
Mom: How can you say that?
Dad: Because when he was just an egg, I dropped him!
Mom: Memphis! Oh, my poor little Mumble.
Mumble: But, Mom, I’m perfectly fine.
Dad: No. No, you’re not, boy. For all our sakes, you must stop this freakiness with the feet.
Penguin Leader: Your father speaks wisely. Heed his suffering heart and repent.
Mumble: But it just doesn’t make any sense.
Penguin Leader: Then your arrogance leaves us no choice!
Dad: No, wait. Please, son, you can do this. It ain’t so hard.
Mumble: Don’t ask me to change, Pa, because I can’t.
Penguin Leader: ③And that, my brethren, is the end of it. You, begone!
Mom: Mumble.
Mumble: No, Ma, it’s OK. It’s OK. Let me tell something to you. When I find out what’s happening to the fish, I’ll be back.
B (Mumble is back home.)
Dad: Mumble? Is it truly you?
Mumble: ④Every last bit of me, Pa.
Dad: I thought...I…
Mumble: Pa?
Dad: There ain’t been one day...not one day that I‘ve done right by you.
Mumble: Oh, Pa.
Mom: Dance for him, Daddy. Dance with your boy.
Dad: You’ll have to forgive me. The music’s gone clean out of me.
Mumble: No, it hasn’t. It’s just like singing with your body.
Mom: Come on, baby. We can do it.
Dad: Oh, Mama.
Mumble: It’s just one big old foot after the other. That’s it.
Mom: Yeah.
Mumble: Yeah, see?
Dad: Well, that feels good. (Singing) You don’t have to be beautiful…
Mom: Yeah, Memphis.
Dad (Singing): To turn me on…
Mom: Daddy.
Dad (Singing): I just need your body, baby…From dusk till dawn…You don’t have to be rich to be my girl…
Dad Mom (Singing): You don’t have to be cool…To rule my world…Ain’t no particular song…I’m more compatible with…I just want your extra time and your...
