From September 6-17, the 2008 Summer Paralympic Games, the 13th Paralympics, will be held in Beijing.
1)Approximately 4,000 athletes from 150 different countries will be competing, an increase on the 130 countries who took part in Athens.
"“Spirit in Motion” is the new Paralympic 2)Motto adopted in 2003, expressing the inspirational character of the Paralympic Movement as well as the 3)elite performance of Paralympic athletes. It also stands for the strong will of every Paralympian. The word “Spirit” implies that the 4)IPC is not limited to only staging high performance sport, but that there is a strong message behind them. “Motion” on the other hand implies, that the IPC is an organization on the move.
That Paralympic spirit can be traced back to 1948, when Sir Ludwig Guttmann introduced the first Stoke Mandeville Games for World War II 5)veterans with 6)spinal cord-related injuries. Later, other disability groups also established their international sports organisations, which arranged various competitions.
A new page in Paralympic history was written when, in 1988, the Paralympic Games were held immediately following the Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea. Since this date, the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games have followed the Olympic Games utilizing the same venues, village and in many cases joint sponsors and organizational 7)structures. From the 2012 bid process onwards, the host city chosen to host the Olympic Games will 8)be obliged to host the Paralympics as well.
Elements of the 2008 Beijing Paralympics
Emblem 會徽
The emblem of the 2008 Summer Paralympics is like the Chinese character “之 (Zhi)”. It looks like an athlete in motion. The colors, which form the shape of a person, have special meaings also. Red represents the sun; blue is for the sky and green for the ground. Together, this
9)demonstrates an ancient Chinese philosophy that humans can be one with everything in the sky and on the earth.
Slogan 口號
The slogan is the same as the 2008 Summer Olympics, “One World, One Dream”.
Mascot
The Mascot of the 2008 Summer Paralympics is a cow named “Lele”. Her full name is “Funiu Lele”, which roughly means “Lucky, Happy Cow”.
Cows are recognized as being down-to-earth, diligent, 10)staunch and having a never-say-die spirit. These 11)characteristics are adopted to show the 12)unremitting spirit of athletes with a disability in being the best they can be. It 13)dovetails with the upbeat spirit of Paralympians and the concept of “14)Transcendence, Equality, 15)Integration” of the Beijing Paralympic Games.
Torch relay
In June 2008, the Beijing Games’ Organizing Committee announced that the planned international torch relay for the Paralympic Games had been cancelled. The Committee stated that the relay was being cancelled to enable the Chinese government to “focus on the rescue and relief work” following the Sichuan earthquake. The torch relay will be held 16)exclusively within China.
