是時(shí)候做別的了

每當(dāng)說(shuō)到“離開(kāi)”總是會(huì)特別的感傷。但人在職場(chǎng)，時(shí)時(shí)刻刻都面臨著各種“分別”，為了自己追求的職業(yè)夢(mèng)想，不得不與自己熟悉的同事，熟悉的工作環(huán)境說(shuō)“再見(jiàn)”。Stephanie經(jīng)過(guò)一段時(shí)間的考慮，也做出了離開(kāi)的決定。

Stephanie: Will， can we talk?

Will: Sure. What’s on your mind?

Stephanie: It’s hard for me to say. Umm…I’ve given it a lot of thought and I think ①it’s time for me to move on.

Will: Hmm? Maybe you just need a break. Take

a holiday?

Stephanie: No. I really think I’m ready for a new job.

Will: ②You’re pulling my leg， right? This is another one of your pranks. ③I’m not gonna fall for it that easily.

Stephanie: I’m not kidding around. Actually， I’ve had offers from other companies. There are a few who are interested in me.

Will: ④This has really come out of the blue.

Stephanie: ⑤I have been tossing up my options for a few weeks actually. ⑥I needed a lot of time to mull it over， but I think I’ve gone as far as I can go with Action Company.

Will: Man! ⑦You are serious. But you have been so happy lately. Why the sudden change of heart?

Stephanie: I am happy here， but I have to think of my future. I can’t stay in a company where there are no opportunities for advancement. Mr. Black has made it quite clear I won’t be promoted any time soon， and besides， he will likely replace any senior positions with managers from one of our other branches.

Will: Well， when ⑧you put it like that， it’s hard for me to argue. How soon are we talking?

Stephanie: Well I have to give one month notice under my contract. So I think I’ll meet with Mr. Black today and ⑨break the news to him.

Will: It sure won’t be the same around here without you.

Smart Sentences

① It’s time for me to move on. 是時(shí)候我該干別的了。

it’s time (for sth.): sth. ought to happen or to be done now（是做某事或某事該發(fā)生的時(shí)候了）。例如：

It’s time you go to take a vacation.

你該休假了。

② You’re pulling my leg， right? 你在開(kāi)玩笑，對(duì)吧？

pull sb.’s leg: tease sb. by telling him/her/them sth. shocking or worrying as a joke（與某人開(kāi)玩笑）。例如：

I suspect that he was pulling my leg by telling me the news.

我懷疑他把消息告訴我是在跟我開(kāi)玩笑。

③ I’m not gonna fall for it that easily. 我不會(huì)這么輕易上當(dāng)?shù)摹?/p>

fall for sth.: believe a lie or trick（受騙，上當(dāng)）。例如：

I can’t believe Joe fell for such nonsense.

④ This has really come out of the blue. 這的確來(lái)得有點(diǎn)突然。

out of the blue: sth. unexpected（出乎意料地，突然）。例如：

⑤I have been tossing up my options for a few weeks actually. 事實(shí)上我已有好幾個(gè)星期在權(quán)衡作哪個(gè)選擇了。

toss up sb.’s options: weigh sb.’s available options in trying to make a decision （權(quán)衡各種選擇以作出決定）。

例如：

Nancy doesn’t have a lot of options to toss up as to what to do with her old house.

至于怎么處理她的老房子，南希并沒(méi)有太多的選擇余地。

⑥ I needed a lot of time to mull it over. 我需要很多時(shí)間來(lái)認(rèn)真琢磨一下。

mull sth. over: think about sth. for a long time before making a decision（仔細(xì)考慮，反復(fù)思考）。例如：

Joe has been mulling over the idea of going to graduate school.

喬一直在反復(fù)考慮是否要去讀研。

⑦ You are serious. 你是認(rèn)真的。

You are serious: used to indicate self-confirmation about the other’s sincerity（用以表達(dá)對(duì)對(duì)方態(tài)度確認(rèn)）。例如：

—I bought a table calendar so I can learn a new word

every day.

我買了一個(gè)臺(tái)歷，以便一天學(xué)一個(gè)新單詞。

—So you are serious about this.

這么說(shuō)你對(duì)這事是認(rèn)真的。

⑧ You put it like that... 你這么說(shuō)的話……

put (it like that)/put (it that way): express an idea/remark in a particular way（以特定的方式表述，表達(dá)）。例如：

I’m not sure how to put my plan to you.

我不知道怎樣把我的計(jì)劃講給你聽(tīng)。

⑨ break the news to him 跟他透露這個(gè)消息

break the news to sb.: tell the news (usually bad news) to sb. kindly so as not to shock him/her（以婉轉(zhuǎn)的方式報(bào)告消息，通常是壞消息）。例如：

My daughter broke the news that she got divorced.

我女兒告訴我說(shuō)她離婚了。
