英語最高程度的表現(xiàn)形式種種

摘 要：最高程度這一概念經(jīng)常在我們的日常生活中被應用，本文對英語中最高程度的表現(xiàn)形式進行了分析和歸納。

我們在日常生活中，經(jīng)常使用最高程度這一概念，它的表現(xiàn)方式豐富多彩。例如漢語中，除了最基本的用法“最+形容詞”和“頂+形容”以外，還使用各種成語，如：首屈一指、舉世無雙、世無匹敵、無與倫比、獨一無二、不計其數(shù)、無以復加等等。英語亦然。本文擬就英語的最高程度表現(xiàn)形式做一些歸納：

1.結構“（the）+形容詞/副詞的最高級+比較范圍”。使用最高級時，通常在一定的范圍內(nèi)（三者以上）進行比較，用短語或從句來表示，形容詞最高級前一般要加定冠詞the，如：

It’s the best book I’ve ever read.這是我讀過的最好的書。

Of the three boys，John behaves（the）most politely.約翰在三個男孩中行為最有禮貌。

He works（the）hardest of all.所有的人當中，他工作最努力。

2.最高級常用“one of+形容詞最高級+復數(shù)名詞”結構，如：

Kunming is one of the most beautiful cities.昆明是中國最美麗的城市之一。

William is one of the bravest men.威廉姆是最勇敢的人之一。

3.結構“形容詞（最高級）+of+the+同一形容詞（原級）”，如：

John’s family was the poorest of the poor.約翰的家里非常貧窮。

This slander is indeed the wickedest of the wicked.這種誹謗的確十分惡毒。

4.上述結構還可轉(zhuǎn)化為另外一種說法，即名詞也可以仿照這種結構：名詞（單）+of+同一名詞（單或復）。這時，已經(jīng)失去了形容詞最高級的形式，卻仍保持著最高級的含義，如:

Wang Zhaojun was the beauty of beauties.王昭君是絕代佳人。

I am confronted with a difficulty of difficulties.我面臨著最難解決的困難。

5.在“最高級+of+名詞”的結構中，可數(shù)名詞用復數(shù)形式，不可數(shù)名詞用單數(shù)形式，名詞前不用修飾詞，如：

He is the bravest of fighters.他非常英勇善戰(zhàn)。

He spoke in the softest of voices.他用極其溫和的聲音說話。

6.最高級“the last”表示強烈的否定意義；“the least”用于否定句中，也表示強烈的否定意義，如：

He is the last man to do such a thing.他最不可能做那樣的事。

This is the last place to meet you here.真沒想到會在這兒遇見你。

Money is the last thing he wants，and you won’t succeed by offering it.他決不要錢，你想用錢去買通他是決不會成功的。

7.形容詞最高級還可用于“at one’s ....”這種結構中，如：

The peony is at its best.牡丹花開得正盛。

I know her tone，I knew she was at her worst.我聽得出她的語氣，我知道她這時候心情最不好。

He is at his happiest in his description of country life.他描寫農(nóng)村生活最拿手。

8.最高級表示對原級加強語氣，most有“非常”、“極其”、“十分”的意義，此時不用定冠詞，如：

Oh! It’s most beautiful!哎呀！真是美極了！

This is most difficult.這非常困難。

It is most harmful to breathe in such polluted air.吸入這種污染的空氣是十分有害的。

9.除用形容詞的最高級形式表達最高級比較，還常用比較級句型表達最高級，比如用“more....than”結構表示，如：

Mary runs faster than other girl in her class.

（=Mary runs fastest in her class.）

瑪麗比班上其他女孩跑得快。

The Yangtze River is longer than any other river in China.

（=The Yangtze River is the longest of all the rivers in China.）

長江比中國其他河流都長。

10.也可以用“as.....as”結構來表示最高級，如：

Nothing in my life shook me so deeply as my first visit to China.

（=My first visit to China shook me the most deeply.）

第一次訪問中國最深深地打動了我。

This novel is nothing like so interesting as that one.這本小說遠不如那本小說有趣。

11.還可以用“否定詞+比較級”來表示，如：

There’s nothing cheaper.再便宜不過的了。

He couldn’t be worse.他的情況再壞不過了。

12.結構“the+名詞”，用以表示某個獨一無二的人或物，具有“最好的、最著名的、最典型的”含義，如：

Mary was the landlady.瑪麗是最典型的女房東。

Dr.X is the specialist in acupuncture therapy.某大夫是針灸療法最出色的專家。

13.結構“be＋all+名詞”，這類句型多用于表達人們的心情和態(tài)度，如：

He is all courtesy.他非常有禮貌。

The old woman was all anxiety.這位老人焦急萬分。

14.這類句型中的all不僅可接名詞，還可接介詞短語，all仍然表示最高級的含義，如：

I am all for adopting the new teaching method.我最贊成采用這種新教學法。

For the child，a glass of milk a day is all to the good.對這小孩說來，一天一杯牛奶是非常有好處的。

15.一些帶all的固定詞組，如：

Music was his all in all.他最喜歡的就是音樂。

I missed my brother all right.我最想念我的兄弟。

He is his father all over. 他最像他的父親。

16.結構“a devil（或hell…）of a +名詞”表示程度，含有“極端、最高級”的意義，如：

Mary is a good singer.She has always been a hell of a performer. 瑪麗是個優(yōu)秀的歌唱家，她一直演唱得最出色。

A devil of a poor hand I shall make at the trade，no doubt. 我要干這一行，一定蹩腳得要命。

17.一些詞組，如：

At the outside there were not fifty people present. 出席的最多不到五十人。

Not the least of the difficulties is that of obtaining enough water. 最大的困難是在于不容易得到足夠的水。

We can’t get to New York before ten o’clock at best. 我們最快能在十點鐘前到達紐約。

18.一些單詞沒有最高級，它們本身具有最高級的含義，如：

excellent極好的，perfect完美的，supreme最高的，maximal/maximum最大的，minimal/minimum最小的，utmost最大程度的，topmost最高的，headmost最前面的，aftermost最后面的，favorite最喜歡的，extraordinary 格外的……

What’s your favorite program?你最喜歡的節(jié)目是什么？

Her French is excellent. 她的法語好極了。

還有一些詞也是最高程度的意思，如：quite 十分，very 很，too太，enough足夠的，everything一切，surpass超過……

His answer is quite right.他的回答完全正確。

It’s too long.它太長了。

Grammar is not everything. 語法不是一切。

19.最高級還可用程度狀語修飾，語義更強，如：

This is much the best.這是最最好的。

He is by far the tallest among us.他是我們中間最最高的。

20.在非正式語體中，我們會遇見最高級代替比較級的現(xiàn)象，如：

Who runs the fastest of the two， Tom or Joe?他們倆誰跑得快，湯姆還是約翰？

which is the tallest structure，the Eiffel Tower or the Washing-ton Monument? 哪一座建筑物最高，是巴黎鐵塔還是華盛頓記念碑？
