Sweden is a fairly typical northern European country, and known for its sound social welfare system. Education is one part of that. In Sweden, parents don’t end up paying large amounts of money for their child’s education. From kindergarten to university it’s completely free. About one-third of all young Swedes go on to higher education.
“Sweden makes me think there is such a thing as a free lunch,” said Lilyan Yu, who graduated from Blenkinge Technology of Institute two years ago. Yu was treated like a Swedish student and didn’t pay tuition. She only had to pay for housing and food—around 2,000 yuan for an apartment on campus and 1,000 yuan per month for food.
The free education has attracted many Asian students, and an influx in recent years has put great pressure on the education system. The Swedish government has been told by college teachers that they need to make non-European students pay tuition.
Some say that it’s not fair to provide a free education for students from countries that don’t reciprocate(互惠). Swedish students have to pay tuition in China, but Chinese don’t pay in Sweden.
Denmark was the first of three Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway) to start charging tuition for non-European Union students last September.
1. When Lilyan Yu studied in Sweden, she paid ____.
A. for nothingB. for tuition
C. for housing and foodD. for tuition, housing and food

A. the government should attract more students to study in Sweden
B. excellent students should be given more rights to study in Sweden
C. all young students should go on to higher education
D. non-European students should be made to pay for tuition
4. We can infer from the passage that ____.
A. all young Swedes are free charged from kindergarten to university
B. Lilyan Yu was treated as a non-European student during her campus days
C. Sweden and China do not follow mutual reciprocate policy
D. Norway started to charge non-European students last September

Computers have been used in teaching for more than twenty years. But a new book says that only now are they changing education. And it predicts that a lot more is about to happen.
The book is called Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns. “Disruptive innovation” is a theory developed by lead author Clayton Christensen, a professor at the Harvard Business School. He says organizations almost always use new, creative technology only to continue what they already do.
New technology should change organizations, he says, disrupt them in a good way. They should use the technology to do things differently—for example, to serve more needs. The new book says the needed disruptive force in education is computer-based learning.
Michael Horn, another author of Disrupting Class, told us about a Boston public school that he visited. Every student at Lilla G. Frederick Middle School in Dorchester, Massachusetts, has a laptop computer. One class was learning about storms. Michael Horn says the laptops made it possible to truly individualize the lessons, to divide materials by ability level and learning style. At the end, the students all took part in a discussion led by the teacher. Computer-based learning offers a way for students to take advanced courses not offered at their school, or to retake classes they failed. It also serves those who cannot physically attend school, and students who receive home schooling or need tutoring.
Computer-based learning includes online courses. Enrollments in online courses have grown sharply. In 2007, the United States had about one million enrollments, not including college courses. Students could be enrolled in more than one course, through schools or education companies.
High school students make up about seventy percent of the enrollments. Still, nationally, only about one percent of all high school courses last year were taught online.
But the authors of Disrupting Class predict it will be ten percent in about six years. And their research suggests that the number will be about fifty percent by 2019. And Michael Horn says the future of online learning could be even greater in developing countries.

Chemical dependency can result from many things: alcohol, caffeine, illegal drugs like cocaine, legal drugs like pain killers. But one of the most difficult dependencies to break is also one of the most common: smoking. The body becomes addicted to the nicotine in tobacco. Now, researchers may have found an important link in the brain to smoking addiction.
Scientists at the University of Southern California and the University of Iowa studied 32 former smokers. All of the men and women had brain injuries as a result of strokes. Half of them reported that they were able to give up cigarettes quickly and easily after they suffered the brain damage. Magnetic resonance imaging showed that twelve of those sixteen patients had suffered damage to a part of the brain called the insula(腦島). Experiments have suggested that the insula has a lot to do with the experience of pain and some basic emotions like fear, anger and happiness.
The patients in the study had all smoked at least five cigarettes a day for two years. One of the sixteen who reported that they quit smoking immediately and without effort had smoked as many as forty a day.
Antoine Bechara was one of the leaders of the study. He says the insula is not the only area of the brain involved in cigarette addiction. He says many parts of the brain are connected with substance dependency. But he says damage to the insula does seem to destroy a necessary link in the smoking addiction.
The patients did not lose all dependencies—they still had a normal desire for food, for example. This may suggest that the insula is more responsible for dependencies that come from a learned pleasure, like smoking. And the researchers say their discovery may point to a weak spot in smoking addiction.
They say it could lead to better ways to help people stop smoking—but much more research is needed.
1. Which of the following is the most common dependency that is difficult to get rid of? ____.
A. CaffeineB. CocaineC. CigaretteD. Alcohol
2. According to the passage, we can know that ____.
A. the patients in the study had brain injuries because of accidents

C. the patients in the study don’t smoke for a long time
D. some patients in the study could give up smoking quickly because of brain damage
3. According to the passage, which of the following statements about the insula is NOT true? ____.
A. The insula is one of the areas of the brain involved in cigarette addiction

D. Smoking addition can be cured by destroying the insula
4. What would be the best title for the passage? ____.
A. Brain Damage Cures Cigarette AddictionB. How to Cure Smoking Addiction
C. The Reason for Chemical DependencyD. Cigarette Addiction

American schools are looking for ways to save money on bus transportation because of high fuel prices. More children may have to walk, ride their bikes or find other ways to get to school. But, as another effect of the high prices, they may not have to go to school as often.
Some schools, especially in rural areas, are changing to a four-day week. That means longer days instead of the traditional Monday-through-Friday schedule. Beginning in the fall, students in the Maccray school district in Minnesota will be in school Tuesday through Friday. Each school day will be sixty-five minutes longer. Superintendent Greg Schmidt says the district expects to save about sixty-five thousand dollars a year in transportation costs. The district has about seven hundred students living in an area of nine hundred square kilometers.
State officials have approved the plan for three years. They may change their mind before then if learning suffers. In Custer, South Dakota, students have been going to school Monday through Thursday since 1995. Superintendent Tim Creal says the change has saved an estimated one million dollars over just the past eight years.
And he sees other benefits, too. Students get more instructional time. And activities that used to interfere with classes are now held on non-school days. He says that in the future, the growth of online classes could make it possible to require even fewer days in school. High fuel prices are driving college students to take more online classes. And in some states, high school students can take them, too.
A four-day school week sounds like a great idea for students and teachers. But working parents may have to pay for child care for that fifth day. In agricultural areas, it can mean an extra day of helping on the family farm.
1. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the effect caused by high fuel prices? ____.
A. More parents will take their children to school by car
B. The number of students who will ride their bikes to school will increase
C. Students will go to school less than usual
D. More children will choose to go to school on foot
2. In the view of Tim Creal, the benefits of a four-day week in school don’t include ____.
A. saving a lot of money in transportation costs
B. giving students more instructional time
C. solving the problem of interference between activities and classes
D. the rapid growth of online classes
3. From the passage, we know the plan of a four-day week in school ____.
A. may be changed if students suffer from learning
B. causes students to leaarn less knowledge in school
C. will make students more interested in study than before
D. will make students have an extra day of helping on the school farm
4. It can be inferred from the passage that ____.
A. after the four-day week plan, students will go to school Monday through Thursday
B. a four-day week may add some economic burden to working parents
C. students won’t take school buses to go to school after the four-day week plan
D. high fuel prices are driving college students to take less online classes
