故事梗概：改編自真實故事的《十月的天空》講述的是一個關于夢想的故事。在西弗吉尼亞的煤林地區，開采煤礦是當地所有人的生活中心。主人公霍默的父親約翰喜歡煤礦，因為這是整個地區存在的原因，他希望霍默繼續留在煤礦上。但霍默有自己的打算，他想走出“煤林”當一個科學家—而這在當時的煤林地區幾乎就是一個天大的笑話。火箭先驅馮·布勞恩激發了他的靈感，霍默發明了他第一個火箭，之后一發不可收拾，最終實現了兒時的夢想。1998年2月，霍默作為一名工程師從美國航空航天局退休。

(Homer’s voice) Dear Dr. Von Braun， (TV Announcer: Six， five， four， three...) My name is Homer Hickam. (Two， one. Liftoff. Ignition. Liftoff.)I’m 17 and I live in a small mining town in West Virginia. I’m writing to offer my 1)condolences to you and your team...on your recent attempt to launch the Vanguard rocket. I also had a 2)disastrous occurrence during the launch of my own small rocket. Since here in Coalwood， everyone’s much more interested in what’s down below the earth than what’s above it， there isn’t a whole lot of material to be found on the subject of rocketry. ①So I’ve been kind of stumbling around in the dark.

（After launching their first rocket）

Homer:（Gunshot）Quentin， you know， that rocket went up at least 100 feet.

Quentin: More like 200. (Gunshots continue.)

Homer:（Gunshot）God... Man， will you cut it out， Roy Lee?

Roy Lee: Die， you son of a bitch. Come on.

O’Dell: My turn now.

Roy Lee: Hey， man. What’s with you?

Homer: Man， ②we should be tryin’ to get in that science fair instead of sittin’ around here like a bunch of 3)hillbillies.

Roy Lee: I got some really bad news for you， Homer. We are a bunch of hillbillies.

O’Dell: Besides， um， didn’t your dad say no more rockets?

Homer: No. He said no more rockets on company property.

O’Dell: Do you realize how far we’d have to go to get off company property?

Homer: Yeah. We have to go to Snakeroot.

Quentin: Snakeroot? That’s eight miles.

Homer: Not that far. I mean， we could walk if we have to.

O’Dell: Oh， walk. That’s a fantastic idea. (Laughing)

Homer: Come on， let’s go! Come on!

Roy Lee: ③Wake the hell up， will ya， Homer? I got about as much chance of winnin’ that science fair as you do winnin’ a football scholarship. I know I’m gonna be a miner. I’ve known my entire life. What the hell’s so bad about

minin’ coal?

Homer: Nothin’， Roy Lee. Coal minin’s great. That’s why your stepdaddy’s the biggest drunk in West Virginia. I mean， come on， guys! You know the mine’ll kill ya. Did you ever hear the story about how O’Dell’s dad died?

Roy Lee: Homer， will you forget it， man?

O’Dell: Shut up， Homer.

Homer: A piece of slate caught him right in the neck and cut his head clear off.

O’Dell: Bitch! Come on! (Grunting)

Roy Lee: O’Dell!

Homer: Man， you all wanna be coal miners， you all go ahead and be coal miners.

O’Dell: (After a while) God’s honest truth， Homer， what are the chances of a bunch of kids from Coalwood actually winnin’ the National Science Fair?

Homer: A million to one， O’Dell.

O’Dell: ④That good? Well， why didn’t you say so? Come on. Give me that.
