A man meets a 6-year-old girl on the beach. “Hello,” she says. “Hi,” the man says. A sandpiper(鷸)flies by. “My mama says sandpipers come to bring us joy,” the girl says. When the man walks away, she says, “Come again, sir. We will have another happy day.”
For the next few days, the man often goes to the beach to talk and play with the girl. Then one day, the man doesn’t see the girl. The man goes to her home and asks her mother how she is. “My daughter spoke of you so much. She died yesterday. She had leukemia(白血?。? Maybe she didn’t tell you. She said she had a lot of happy days here. She left something to you.” She gives the man an envelope. Inside is a drawing——a yellow beach, a bleu sea, and a brown bird. Underneath are the words: A SANDPIPER TO BRING YOU JOY. When the man looking at the picture, there are tears in his eyes(看著畫,男人留下了眼淚。).
The man keeps the picture in his room. It is a gift form a child, a gift full of love and courage(一份充滿愛和勇氣的禮物。).
Look at the picture. A polar bear is waving the camera in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska. The lovely polar bear is five years old.
Look at the picture. The robot in it is named “Robovie-II”. The robot is a shopping assisting robot. It greets the shopper at the entrance(入口) of the store, follow him to the shelves while holding a grocery basket and reminds(提醒) him of the things on a s shopping list.
Jane comes home from school. She says to her father, “Dad, I think I am cleverer than Tom in my class.” “Why?” her father asks. “Today, the teacher asks us where the milk comes from. Tom says it comes from a fridge.” “Do you know where the milk comes from?” her father asks. “Of course. It comes from the shop.”
1. Skin off one’s nose
他聽完后說: “No skin off my nose.”
注:no skin off sb.’s nose 也可說成 no skin off sb.’s teeth
2. Small beer
客人就可能回答說:“I’ll have a small beer(給我一點兒啤酒).” He thinks no small beer of himself. Ours is a small-beer fast-food joint beside McDonald.
3. Spaghetti
4. Speaking of the devil
Joe于是說“speaking of the devil”。
