Australians have been warned they face a life or death decision over their water — drink recycled sewage or die.
With the drought continuing, the country is set to be forced to use purified waste water for drinking, even though there is great opposition to the measure.
Queensland has become the first state to introduce the policy after a warning from its premier.
“I think in the end, because of the drought, all of Australia is going to end up drinking recycled purified water,\" said Peter Beattie.
“These are difficult decisions, but you either drink water or you die. There's no choice. It’s liquid gold; it’s a matter of life and death.”
Beattie said Australia’s second largest state would become the first to use recycled water for drinking.
Water is recycled in Britain and parts of northern Europe along with the US and Israel.
But Australians have never liked the idea.
To try to change the way Australians think, Prime Minister John Howard and Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull have backed Queensland's move.
“I am very strongly in favour of recycling and Mr. Beattie is right and I agree with him completely,” Howard said.
Turnbull added that Australian cities, all now facing water shortages because of the worst drought on record, must start to use recycled water.
“All of our big cities have to widen the range of water sources to include sources which are not dependent on rainfall,” he said.

“Happiness consists in the variety of agreeable consciousness,” wrote Samuel Johnson,a famous British writer of the eighteenth century.
Today, among different temptations and material sources of modern-day enjoyment, all the people are still searching for the key to happiness. The question “How can we be happy?” seems to worry everyone. People still do not seem able to find a definite answer to the problem of finding happiness. Happiness seems to be a very difficult thing. Solon’s dictum (名言) “no man is happy until he is dead” seems to present both the poor and the rich with a continual threat causing them no end of anxiety.
In Oxford, England, a famous psychology professor, Dr Michael Argyle, has succeeded in his search for happiness. He explains that happiness includes three essential elements—first, positive emotions like joy; second, the absence of negative emotions like anxiety; and lastly, the non-emotional element which means a general, more profound satisfaction with life.
“The biggest source of happiness is a happy marriage,” Dr Argyle explains. “Job satisfaction is another essential ingredient of happiness.” Do you feel you are doing a useful job? Do you feel you are achieving, or stand a chance of achieving your ambitions? If you honestly have positive answers to these questions, then eventually, you will be happy; if not, then you can still be happy by reducing your ambitions and lowering your expectations in order to achieve happiness. The fact is, the higher your ambitions and dreams are,the more difficult it will be for you to achieve your goals and therefore it will be harder to achieve satisfaction and happiness.
Dr Argyle offers other ways people can take to achieve happiness. Music, games or sports, a drink with a friend, a simple gathering at tea, lunch or dinner with loved ones, or simply thinking of nice things, can give a person happiness, if only for a few hours. Surprisingly, television programmes, especially soap operas offer nothing but a few pleasurable moments. Often, television viewers are so carried away emotionally that they feel depressed or emotionally tired. Non-soap programmers, on the other hand, bore many viewers or sometimes deepen their sadness. Dr Argyle further explains that wealth and worldly success do contribute to happiness. But in the ultimate analysis, Dr Argyle says, it is the person’s temperament (性情) that makes him happy or unhappy. “There are among us people who are naturally happy, and there are the sad ones.”
Happiness is indeed mysterious. As one wise man put it, “Few are those who have never had the chance to achieve happiness, but fewer are those who have never taken that chance.”

Joan of Arc, the daughter of a peasant family, was born in 1412 at Domremy in northeastern France. During her childhood, France remained at war with the English invaders, which is called the Hundred Years’ War (1337—1453).
One day, Joan, aged twelve, experienced her first vision when she was out. A boy just coming from the village told Joan that her mother wanted her. Walking home alone through the woods, a bright cloud surrounded her and some voices told her she was chosen to drive out the English invaders and deliver her country by helping the prince Charles VII to be king. The voices added that they would return and give her instructions till the right time for her to take action. Joan arrived home only to know her mother had not got anyone to find her.
Four years later, at the age of 16, Joan left home. She managed to predict that French army would be defeated in a battle, and this impressed Charles VII. A year later, she began to command the army, making her the youngest person in history to command armies of a nation. During her fight, she not only dressed up in men’s clothing and armor, but she also rode at the head of the army. Once, Joan’s army beat English force killing over 2000 while suffering almost no losses. Inspired by her courage, the French army won battle after battle under her leadership. Joan was burnt to death on 30 May, 1431, at the age of nineteen years old with her last words “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!” However, Joan was found innocent twenty-five years later and declared a martyr(烈士).
Up till now, remembered as a national heroine of France and a Catholic saint, Joan of Arc has remained an important figure in Western culture. In a few weeks, high school students face the prospect of taking the much-publicized new SAT Reasoning Test, which for the first time will require them to write a timed essay. Yet colleges continue to send confusing signals about whether students applying in the fall to attend college must take the new exam.
Some schools, including Harvard, say they will accept scores from either the new test or the old SAT I, which was administered for the last time in January and did not contain a writing section. The University of Central Florida, for example, will require the new test, which will be given for the first time on March 12. Still others, such as the University of Virginia, strongly recommend that prospective applicants take the new test but under some circumstances also will accept the old SAT. A number of colleges are delaying a decision. The College Board, which administers the SAT, surveyed more than 1,900 four-year schools and has heard back from slightly more than 500. Of those, 81% say they will require the new test, including schools such as Harvard that are giving students a choice in what will be a year of transition.
“Anything new goes through a special lens of evaluation,” says Lee Stetson, admissions dean at the University of Pennsylvania, which judiciously will use results from the new writing section until officials have a chance to study the revised SAT’s predictive validity.
A number of admissions deans are skeptical that the new exam will be an improvement. Charles Deacon, dean of undergraduate admissions at Georgetown University, says adding the essay “will create more barriers to poor kids who are less well-prepared”. The test was rushed to market because the University of California system, a major College Board customer, threatened to stop requiring the SAT, he says. The test “was developed and marketed for all the wrong reasons”. Deacon, who says he has been“badgered” by the College Board to endorse the new exam, has refused to do so.
Some schools, including Georgetown, Iowa’s Grinnell College and Pennsylvania's Franklin and Marshall College, say that at least for now, they will not even look at scores from the writing section when making admission decisions. “We have adopted a wait-and-see attitude,” says Dennis Trotter of Franklin and Marshall.
College Board officials counter that based on extensive field tests, they are confident the test is as reliable a predictor of freshman-year performance as the old SAT. Moreover, they say, well-trained scorers, many of them high school English teachers, will grade the essays, which student have 25 minutes to write.
Amidst all the confusion, what should students do? Admissions deans and school counselors say to be sure to check with each college for requirements.
41. If a student took the SAT in October last year, he has to take another test if he applies for ________.
A. University of Virginia
B. Georgetown University
C. the University of Central Florida
D. Harvard University
42. What does the article tell us about Harvard University?
A. It will only accept the new SAT this fall.
B. It has not made a decision on whether to accept the old SAT this fall.
C. It will require scores from the writing section this fall.
D. It will ask all applicants to take the new test a year later.
43. An important reason for negative attitudes towards the new writing examination is that ________.
A. the examination will add to the difficulty for those students from financially underprivileged families
B. the examination was marketed much too quickly without careful consideration
C. the examination will cause short-term confusion and lead to no long-term benefits
D. the examination was a product of the College Board and various universities
44. According to the author, what should students do at the moment?
A. Students should make clear which test is acceptable.
B. Students should contact the university for the arrangement of the test.
C. Students should ask the College Board for the latest information about the program.
D. Students should get prepared for the new examination in less that a year.
45. What can we infer from the passage about the test?
A. Students who have taken the old test are strongly advised not to take the new test.
B. As compared with the old test, the new one requires the student to write an essay in a shorter period of time.
C. The College Board has decided to invite university teachers to grade the essays.
D. The College Board has appealed to many universities to support the new examination.

I think the awareness of the parents in China on the importance of education is growing. More and more parents will try really hard to get the best possible education they can get for their children. So, it is important that what the government offers for education is as good as it can get.
And there has been a lot of changes in thinking, in education, in the last 20 years on how it should be approached, what is the best way of learning.
Society is changing very quickly. None of us can stop learning when we leave school. So, we must create life-long learners. We ourselves must be life-long learners. But we must make sure that our students understand that they will never stop learning.
They also must become independent learners, because, at some point, no one tells them; they must do their homework. They have to do this on their own. So, that makes them become independent. It makes them responsible for their own learning. It also means that once you get them to understand this, that is the classroom.
It is not just the teacher giving and giving and the students sitting back and taking it in. The students have to participate and play an active role. But to give the students the feeling that they are active, they should be active both in and out of the classroom.
And students need to have international understanding, which can not be fully got in the classroom. For example, they cannot learn about Iran or about Canada, because it is just words on paper or even words on a screen or pictures on a computer.

The Best Way of Learning
In this passage the author hopes all students will become active, independent and life-long learners. In the process of learning, they should try every means to get a better understanding of the world.
There is no doubt that we students should be active and independent in learning. In class, the relationship between teachers and students is interactive, which requires students to participate actively. And after class, being independent in learning is helpful in strengthening what we’ve learned and gain what can’t be learned in class. Besides, we must keeplearning even if we’ve left school. It is never too old to learn. Only if we become life-long learners can we catch up with the pace of the rapid development of society.
In my opinion, we can make full use of the resources around us, such as the Internet and some learning materials. Together with the help of our teachers, I believe all of us can find the best way of learning and become active, independent and life-long learners.
