This story happened a long time ago, somewhere in Europe, in the middle of a cold winter. There was a terrible famine throughout the land. In the villages, people were so hungry that each family kept their food hidden away, so that no one else would be able to find it. They hardly spoke to each other, and if any food was found, they fought over it.

One day, a poor traveler arrived in a village and set up his tent by the side of the road. He had with him a large pot(鍋), a wooden spoon(勺), and a stone.

“You cant stay here,” said the villagers. “There is no food for you!” And they ran back to their houses to make sure no one stole their food while they were away.

“That doesnt matter,” said the stranger. “I have everything I need.”

He gathered sticks and built a fire in the middle of the main square. Then he placed his pot on the fire and added some water. He looked around and noticed that he was being watched from every window and from every doorway. He smiled with satisfaction as the steam rose from the pot. Next, he took a stone from his pocket, which he carefully placed in the pot. Then he waited patiently for it to boil.

By this time, the villagers were full of curiosity. Several of them had gathered around the pot. “What are you making?” they asked.

“Stone soup,” replied the man. “It smells good, doesnt it? Of course, a little salt and pepper would really help the taste.”

“I think I could find some salt and pepper,” said one of the women, and she ran back to her house for the salt and pepper to add to the soup.

“How tasty it would be with a small piece of garlic (大蒜) ,” said the traveler.

“I might have a small piece of garlic,” said another villager.

“If only we had some potatoes, too, then it would really be delicious,” said the stranger.

“Ill get you a potato,” said another man and rushed home for it.

Soon word had spread around the whole village. Someone was making a delicious soup with a special stone. People came from every house to smell the special soup, and each of them brought something to make the soup taste even better. They were so hungry, and the soup smelled so good. “It must be that special stone,” they said.

Finally, the man said that the soup was ready and it was time to eat. The villagers each brought a dish, and there was plenty of food for everyone. They talked and laughed, and for a while they forgot the famine and the cold. Even long after the famine had ended, people still remembered that night and the finest soup they had ever tasted.

Stephen Hawking, one of the worlds most important scientists, believes that to continue to live normally, humans must move into space. “Once we move away into space and set up independent areas, our future should be safe,” he says.

Today, the United States, India, China, and Japan are all planning to send astronauts back to Earths closest neighbor: the moon. Each country wants to create space stations there between 2020 and 2030. These stations will prepare humans to visit and later live on Mars or other Earthlike planets.

Robber Zubrin, a rocket scientist, thinks that human should settle in space. He wants to start with Mars. Why? There are several advantages: for one, sending people to the moon and Mars will allow us to learn a lot—for example, whether living on other planets is possible. Then, we can at last create new human societies on other planets. Besides, the progress we make for space travel in the fields of science, technology, medicine, and health can also do good to us here on Earth.

But not everyone thinks sending humans into space is a smart idea. Many say its too expensive to send people, even on a short journey. And most space trips are not short. A oneway trip to Mars, for example, would take about six months. People traveling this kind of distance face a number of health problems. Also, for many early space settlers, life would be very difficult. The air on the moon and the suns light, for example, are very dangerous. People would have to stay indoors most of the time.

However, sending people into space seems certain. In the future, we might see cities on the moon and maybe even new human cultures on other planets.

First stop: the moon.

( )36. Stephen Hawking thinks that humans must move into space to .

A. enjoy themselves B. find life outside earth

C. save themselves D. communicate with beings there

( )37. Some of the countries plan to build space stations on .

A. Mars B. the moon C. the earth D. other planets

( )38. According to the passage, life for the early space settlers would be very hard because .

A. they cant contact beings from space

B. it is not safe to stay outdoors for long

C. they will meet new human societies

D. it is difficult to know new human cultures

( )39. What can we know from the passage?

A. Not all people agree with human space travel.

B. Many countries have created space station on the moon.

C. Mars is the most suitable place for humans.

D. A short journey to space wont cost much.

( )40. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Taking a trip to space B. Living on Mars

C. Making contact with the moon D. Sending humans into space

Parks usually provide people with a place to relax themselves. In these parks, people sit chatting, play games or listen to birds singing. Families come too, to have picnics or have fun together in other ways. It costs little or no money to go to there.

However, recently many parks have been designed to provide enjoyment. We call them theme parks. They are more than parks with trees and lakes. They are such huge places that visitors often use buses to get around. These new parks have a lot of things to see and do. They have restaurants and even hotels. They all charge money for entrance, and for the rides and shows in the park. The big companies that own theme parks expect to make money not just by the charges for entrance, but also by selling souvenirs in their shops and advertising them on television.

Theme parks have a certain idea or a certain theme. For example, a sports theme park will offer visitors sports to play or watch. Its purpose is to get visitors to take part in physical exercise and athletic competition. The challenge for the park is to encourage the visitors to buy a particular brand of sports equipment or clothing. So basketballs and footballs may be sold along with sneakers and special sports clothing.

Some are history or culture theme parks. The past can come to life when we see how people long time ago dressed, worked and lived. Others show us how special groups of people dress today, what they eat and what theirs homes look like. We might go for rides on animals, help cook cultural foods or have our pictures taken in the clothing of king or of minority people. These theme parks also ask visitors to pay for entrance and sell food and other things in their souvenir shops.

Other theme parks include ocean parks, where visitors can see and swim with dolphins and learn about ocean life. There are also science theme parks where visitors can actively join in to do experiments, and there are future parks, where people can go on imaginary trips to space and use the computer to experience life in the future.

I am monitor of Class 1, Grade 9. I feel honored to write to you about our problems. Many of us suffer from stress because there are too many tests and exams and our parents are so strict. Often we have a lot of homework and hardly have any spare time for our hobbies. We try to talk to our teachers and parents, but most of the time we just accept what we are given. It will be very helpful if you can offer us some suggestions on how to relax ourselves and achieve a balance between study and play.

Looking forward to your visit.

Yours,
