英語世界的動物隱喻

1. beast[bist]獸，喻指兇狠的人，壞蛋

Just look at the way he treats his wife！ He is a beast.

且看他對妻子的那副樣子吧！他是個兇狠的人。

2. bear 黑熊，喻指魯莽漢

The old man is a bear； he is always grumbling['gr？蘧mblI？耷].

那個老頭是個魯莽漢，總愛發牢騷。

3. bird 鳥，喻指女朋友（女友是個鳥？！^_^）

Jim took his bird to the pictures last night.

吉姆昨晚帶著他的女朋友去看電影了。

4. cat 貓，喻指心底惡毒的女人

Don't listen to her gossip； she is a cat.

別聽她搬弄是非，她是個惡毒的女人。

5. shark 鯊魚，喻指騙子

She entrusted all her savings to a shark who had promised to double her money.

她把全部積蓄交給一個答應給她加倍償付本利的騙子。

作者簡介：

約翰·多恩，英國玄學派詩人、教士。多恩的詩歌節奏有力，語言生動，想象奇特而大膽，常使用莎士比亞式的機智的隱喻，這些特點在他的詩集《歌與短歌》中十分明顯。本篇詩作摘自他1624年出版的著作《緊急場合的祈禱》中的《沉思錄17》一文。
