1)Corporations should ban internal e-mail. They’re 2)blocking our time for 3)innovative thinking, distracting us with short-term hits, and 4)reinforcing 5)hierarchy. Why don’t we communicate inside companies like we do outside by blogging, by joining online communities of practice, by 6)collectively building knowledge stores by answering questions online. E-mail served a great purpose. It joined us up, helped us to build peer-to-peer rather than hierarchical information sharing, and got information out first, but now it’s dated. It’s slow, it’s 7)overwhelming.
Rather than the one-to-many of e-mail, why not the many-to-many of social media? If you have a good idea, people want to hear it. If you’re interested, interesting people want to follow you. If you want to 8)collaborate deeply, then 9)ditch the e-mail and meet face-to-face. My prediction is that in the next two years at least a couple of 10)courageous CEOs will ditch e-mail. So that’s my idea to change the world. Ditch the e-mail.
