Money cant buy happiness, right? Well, not true. According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, over the past few years, new research has given us a much deeper 1

of the relationship between what we earn and how we 2 . People with higher 3 are, broadly speaking, happier than those who struggle to get by. But the research also shows you have to spend strategically if you expect those bank notes to put a 4 on your face. Here are some ways to better spend your money:

First, buy 5 ,not stuff (東西). A recently published study showed that when people dont have much money to spare, they tend to stick to material goods. People think that experiences are only going to provide 6 happiness, but in a long term, they actually provide both more happiness and more lasting value.

Then, buy lots of little things, rather than one big thing. No matter how much money you spend on something and how 7

that product is,you will get used to having it over time and it will become just another 8 . Such is human nature that people 9 new stuff, and any new thing is likely to bring about happiness, says an Atlantic article. Be sure to 11 time, too. Its also important to consider how what youre buying will affect how you spend your time. Dad wanted no assistance from anyone. He would climb stairs slowly but surely, whistling all the way. As a teenager,I found this embarrassing, 23 if Dad noticed,he didnt let me help.

Our father 24 (be) gone for a long time now,but not the lesson that he taught us: You are only as handicapped as you let 25 be.

A

I find it humorous sometimes that even the most ordinary incidents can have an impact on our awareness.

My wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years ago and we spent a lot of time and energy in the yard to get it looking like it does today. We live on a corner, higher than street level, and the entire side of the yard is surrounded by a professionally built rock wall. The front of the house though is another story because instead of a wall along the sidewalk, the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish.

We did the best we could with what we had to work with and called this area our“rock garden”. Whenever we had leftover flowers or plants,Denise or I would stick them out front, just to bring some color to the area.

Last summer I had reached the end of the rock garden and found a tiny little plant that I could not immediately identify. I knew I didnt plant it and Denise claimed that she didnt either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could figure out what it was.

Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the mystery plant,it appeared to be a Sunflower. It had a tall skinny stalk(莖) and only one head on it. I decided to baby it along and weed around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds,I noticed something unusual. The Sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.

Thats when I realized that if a tiny little Sunflower didnt let a big rock stand in its way of developing,we too have the ability to do the same thing. We believe in ourselves like that little Sunflower,we can attain the same food and nutrition as well.

Stand tall like the Sunflower and be proud of who and what you are and the environment will begin to support you. You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle(障礙)in order to reach your desires.

Its just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name on it and it has been there for the past 10 years or so.

It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas. He didnt hate the true meaning of Christmas, but the commercial aspects of it; overspending, the crazy running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and the dusting powder(除塵粉) for Grandma and the gifts given in desperation because you couldnt think of anything else.

Knowing he felt this way,I decided one year to bypass the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so forth. I reached for something special just for Mike. The inspiration came in an unusual way.

Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling(摔跤)at the junior level at the school he attended and shortly before Christmas, there was a non-league match against a team sponsored by an inner-city church, mostly black.

These youngsters, dressed in sneakers so ragged that shoestrings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, presented a sharp contrast to our boys in their blue and gold uniforms and sparkling(閃閃發光的)new wrestling shoes.

As the match began,I was alarmed to see that the other team was wrestling without headgear,a kind of light helmet designed to protect a wrestlers ears.

It was a luxury the poor boys obviously could not afford. Well,we ended up beating them out. However, when each of their boys got up from the mat,he walked in an extremely proud and confident way, appearing that they didnt acknowledge defeat.

Mike, seated beside me,shook his head sadly,“I wish just one of them could have won,” he said. “They have a lot of potential, but losing like this could take the heart right out of them.”

Mike loved kids--all kids--and he knew them, and then suddenly the idea for his present came into my mind.

A. show the importance of coaching

B. illustrate how a difficult life the black boys led

C. tell a story of a special Christmas present

D. show her pride in her boys good performance

C

I recently read about an athlete who made it all the way to the Olympics even though he didnt like his chosen sport. Many people committed their entire life to seeking one tiny, yet powerful sentence—Im proud of you. At some point we all have someone we want to please, whose approval means the world to us.

I have an extremely clear memory of the person I wanted approval from, the kind of memory that stays entirely clear. I had parroted someones opinion about buying a Canadian soda. “We should really support our own economy,” ten year old me said. I had no idea what that meant, but I was looked at with approval, and my heart felt warm. It felt so good.

I loved that feeling. The approval of my hero. It was nothing like the Olympic athlete, but I made some very big decisions based on what might make them proud. I was hugely affected by wanting their approval.

Four months ago this person removed me from their life. It hurt a lot. However,in life there is rarely hurt without growth. I recently reflected on myself and my behavior since then and noticed something—I feel free.

This realization made me see how often I was modifying myself according to the thought,“what would they think?” It was shockingly frequent. This person had become a typical example of all kinds of people, and Id been constantly avoiding judgment. I suddenly felt like Id been a stupid version of myself my whole life!

Yes,Id been using the desire for approval as an unconscious excuse for hiding now as I never really believe in myself. Are you hiding? I hid in approval-seeking. But remember: its okay to not be accepted. In fact, you will never be accepted. If you finally gain the approval that was so dearly wanted,it will be lost from someone else. (Yourself, likely.) You will also miss out on connecting with people who really do see you,and who think you kick ass(了不起的人).

A messy falling out isnt necessary to be freed from wanting someones approval. You dont even have to tell them that you no longer care what they think of you. Just go ahead and do what makes you happy,be yourself, and go for the things you really want in life. Do your thing, and let them do theirs.

36. Which of the following is true about the author?

A. He used to make a decision by asking advice.

B. He used to make decisions by seeking approval.

C. He used to make decision randomly.

D. He liked to copy others opinion about things.

37. What did the author mean by saying “in life there is rarely hurt without grow”?

A. People are definitely hurt by others whey they grow up.

B. When people get hurt, they tend to grow up.

C. People feels painful when they have to grow up.

D. People can be easily hurt in their growth.

38. Why did the author want to get the approval?

A. Because he admired his “hero” very much.

B. Because he wanted to hide himself from others.

C. Because he didnt know what he really wanted.

D. Because he was not confident about himself.

39. According to the author,people should .

A. pursue the things they really want

B. try to satisfy all the people around them

C. let others know they dont mind their opinions

D. try their best to be accepted by others

40. From which section of a newspaper does this passage probably come from?

A. Society B. Psychology

C. Education D. Entertainment

D

The Greenland ice sheet is likely to be more vulnerable(易受傷害的) to global warming than previously thought. The temperature threshold(門檻,極限)for melting the ice sheet completely is in the range of 0.8 to 3.2 degrees Celsius(攝氏)of global warming, with a best estimate of 1.6 degrees above pre-industrial levels, shows a new study. Today, already 0.8 degrees of global warming has been observed.

Significant melting of land ice could contribute to long-term sea-level rise of several meters and therefore it potentially affects the lives of many millions of people. The time it takes before most of the ice in Greenland is lost strongly depends on the level of warming. “The more we exceed(超過)the threshold, the faster it melts,”says Alexander Robinson,lead-author of the study now published in Nature Climate Change. In a business-as-usual scenario(方案) of greenhouse-gas emissions,in the long run humanity might be aiming at 8 degrees Celsius of global warming. This would result in one fifth of the ice sheet melting within 500 years and a complete loss in 2000 years, according to the study. “This is not what one would call a rapid collapse,” says Robinson. “However, compared to what has happened in our planets history,it is fast. And we might already be approaching the decisive threshold.”

In contrast,if global warming would be limited to 2 degrees Celsius, complete melting would happen on a timescale of 50.000 years. Still, even within this temperature range often considered a global guardrail(護欄),the Greenland ice sheet is not secure.

Under certain conditions the melting of the Greenland ice sheet becomes irreversible(不可逆的). If the global temperature significantly passes over the threshold for a long time, the ice will continue melting and not regrow -- even if the climate would, after many thousand years, return to its pre-industrial state. This is related to feedbacks between the climate and the ice sheet: The ice sheet is over 3000 meters thick and thus raised into cooler altitudes. When it melts its surface comes down to lower altitudes with higher temperatures, which accelerates the melting. Also, the ice reflects a large part of solar radiation back into space. When the area covered by ice decreases, more radiation is absorbed and this adds to regional warming.

41. of global warming will cause the Greenland ice sheet to melt completely.

A. 0.8-3.2 degrees Celsius B. 1.6 degrees Celsius

C. 0.8 degrees Celsius D. 0.8-1.6 degrees Celsius

42. How long most of the ice in the Greenland will melt completely depends on .

A. the sea-level rise B. the level of warming

C. the loss of ice D. the human activities

43. In paragraph 2,what Robinson says means that .

A. the loss of ice sheet in the Greenland can be overlooked

B. the loss of ice sheet in the Greenland is a natural process

C. the loss of ice sheet in the Greenland should be prevented without delay

D. humans should be criticized for the loss of ice sheet in the Greenland

44. What is the authors attitude towards the melting of the Greenland ice sheet?

A. Indifferent(漠不關心的)B. Pessimistic(悲觀的)

C. Concerned D. Critical(批評的)

45. Whatll happen if the ice sheet continues to melt?

A. The temperatures may go down.

B. It will accelerate the melting itself.

C. It will reflect more solar radiation back.

D. The ice sheet will go into cooler altitudes.

第二節 信息匹配(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

閱讀下列應用文及相關信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

首先,請閱讀以下購物者的購物誤區:

A. Be polite to salespeople, but dont feel like theyre your new best friends. Dont buy something because youre worried about hurting their feelings or having made them do a lot of work helping you or explaining products to you. At the same time,be respectful of clerks efforts.

B. Be careful of the check-out areas. There are lots of attractive little items here; ask yourself if you really need something before you add it to your pile: how many times have I picked up a jar of Balmex?

C. Get in and get out. The more time you spend in a store, the more youre likely to buy. Even better: dont even go in the store. Then you definitely wont buy.

D. Beware of sale items, which make you feel like you cant afford not to buy,or limited-time offers, which make you feel like you have to take advantage of a special deal. If you dont need or want something, its not a good deal, not matter how cheap it is.

E. Dont buy anything that you dont know you need--this is especially important with clothes. If youre not careful, you can buy a pair of pants marked down 75%, then realize that you cant really wear them unless you buy the right shoes to go with them.

F. Choose cash or credit card. Some people find it far harder to spend actual physical cash;other people find that paying credit cards makes a purchase seem trivial, even when the dollar amount is high. Know whether youre more inclined to overspend with cash or credit cards-and leave that payment method at home.

以下是購買者的需求,請匹配購物者與需注意的誤區:

46. Emma tends to buy unnecessary things when she is waiting to check out. The little items on show there are usually attractive and cheap, which makes her buy more than she has planned.

47. Mary is a shopaholic, who goes shopping nearly five times a week. Every time she steps into a shop, she will buy a lot of things she doesnt need.

48. Gloria doesnt always go shopping but whenever she goes, she will buy a lot of things because the sales are so persuasive that she cant resist the temptation of buying. Whats more, she is unwilling to disappoint them.

49. Cathy likes shopping, because if she buys things with a great discount, she can gain a sense of success, but the problem is that she finds what she buys useless later and thus it is a waste of money.

50. Daisy likes to pay by credit cards, because buying with credit cards really brings her great convenience. But in this way,she is always buying beyond budget, which makes her really regretful.

第二節 讀寫任務(共1小題,滿分25分)

閱讀下面的短文,然后按要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。

That is a tough question to answer, whether you are a man or a woman. But,really,I want to ask... how do you define(給……下定義)your strength? How do you know your limits? How do you know just how much youve got? When push comes to shove(大力推動),we often discover that we are much stronger than we think.

Strength is not always about pure physical strength. Rather,it is about willpower. It is about the ability to get things done. I know some people who are intellectually strong, but they get very little done in their jobs. And I know others who find work extremely challenging, but are able to move mountains by their sheer drive and hard work.

Many people are going through the motions, but are nowhere near their limits. If you want to be stronger, you have to push your boundaries. Want to test your limits? Push yourself. Make sure your goals which are slightly beyond what you think can be achieved.

[寫作內容]

1. 以約30個詞概括短文的主要內容;

Ⅲ 寫作

第一節 基礎寫作

Teenagers obesity in China is a major health problem, with 5% of people being overweight in the country, and more than 20% in the city. This problem is largely caused by excessive food intake and the lack of physical exercise due to the popularity of private cars. It cannot be ignored that obesity will result in a number of diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Moreover, overweight teenagers may become unconfident with their self-image affected. Therefore,in order to solve the problem of obesity, not only should parents cultivate childrens healthy eating habits but also schools should provide nutrition education and promote healthy lifestyle.

第二節 讀寫任務

Strength is more about willpower than about physical strength, so we can be stronger than expected when we are pushed. Therefore, it is suggested that we force ourselves forward to realize our dreams.

The moment I have finished reading this passage, I am deeply lost in thought. It is pushing yourself that increase your limits. We possess inner strength. If we challenge our ability and push ourselves,we may be stronger than we think.

I am preparing for a piano contest now, but the over-scheduled schoolwork leaves me little time to practice. Feeling stressed and nervous, I feel like losing my sense of music, which makes me even more desperate(絕望的). Even worse, I cannot concentrate my mind on the lessons, resulting in my poor performance in the exams. Thankfully, it is when I doubt whether it is a false decision to sign up for the contest and am going to give up that this passage inspires me to push myself.

I am now convinced that I can turn the pressure into drive. First,I should calm down and make a good schedule to set aside time for playing the piano. In addition,I will work harder in the school and improve my work efficiency to guarantee the school work. I am sure that with the spirit of perseverance(鍥而不舍)and constant effort to seek self-breakthrough,I can achieve success.
