Its just a small，white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name on it and it has been there for the past 10 years or so.

It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas. He didnt hate the true meaning of Christmas，but the commercial aspects of it； overspending，the crazy running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and the dusting powder（除塵粉） for Grandma and the gifts given in desperation because you couldnt think of anything else.

I recently read about an athlete who made it all the way to the Olympics even though he didnt like his chosen sport. Many people committed their entire life to seeking one tiny，yet powerful sentence—Im proud of you. At some point we all have someone we want to please，whose approval means the world to us.

I have an extremely clear memory of the person I wanted approval from，the kind of memory that stays entirely clear. I had parroted someones opinion about buying a Canadian soda. “We should really support our own economy，” ten year old me said. This realization made me see how often I was modifying myself according to the thought，“what would they think？” It was shockingly frequent. This person had become a typical example of all kinds of people，and Id been constantly avoiding judgment. I suddenly felt like Id been a stupid version of myself my whole life！

Yes，Id been using the desire for approval as an unconscious excuse for hiding now as I never really believe in myself. Are you hiding？ I hid in approval-seeking. The Greenland ice sheet is likely to be more vulnerable（易受傷害的） to global warming than previously thought. The temperature threshold（門檻，極限）for melting the ice sheet completely is in the range of 0.8 to 3.2 degrees Celsius（攝氏）of global warming，with a best estimate of 1.6 degrees above pre-industrial levels，shows a new study. Today，already 0.8 degrees of global warming has been observed.

Significant melting of land ice could contribute to long-term sea-level rise of several meters and therefore it potentially affects the lives of many millions of people. The time it takes before most of the ice in Greenland is lost strongly depends on the level of warming. “The more we exceed（超過）the threshold，the faster it melts，”says Alexander Robinson，lead-author of the study now published in Nature Climate Change. In a business-as-usual scenario（方案） of greenhouse-gas emissions，in the long run humanity might be aiming at 8 degrees Celsius of global warming. This would result in one fifth of the ice sheet melting within 500 years and a complete loss in 2000 years，according to the study. “This is not what one would call a rapid collapse，” says Robinson. “However，compared to what has happened in our planets history，it is fast. And we might already be approaching the decisive threshold.”

In contrast，if global warming would be limited to 2 degrees Celsius，complete melting would happen on a timescale of 50.000 years. Still，even within this temperature range often considered a global guardrail（護欄），the Greenland ice sheet is not secure.

Under certain conditions the melting of the Greenland ice sheet becomes irreversible（不可逆的）. If the global temperature significantly passes over the threshold for a long time，the ice will continue melting and not regrow -- even if the climate would，after many thousand years，return to its pre-industrial state. This is related to feedbacks between the climate and the ice sheet： The ice sheet is over 3000 meters thick and thus raised into cooler altitudes. When it melts its surface comes down to lower altitudes with higher temperatures，which accelerates the melting. Also，the ice reflects a large part of solar radiation back into space. When the area covered by ice decreases，more radiation is absorbed and this adds to regional warming.

It cannot be ignored that obesity will result in a number of diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Moreover，overweight teenagers may become unconfident with their self-image affected. Strength is more about willpower than about physical strength， so we can be stronger than expected when we are pushed. Therefore， it is suggested that we force ourselves forward to realize our dreams.

I am preparing for a piano contest now， but the over-scheduled schoolwork leaves me little time to practice.
