The Application of Translation Teaching Method in Senior High School English Teaching

Abstract:English learning is a long process,and high school studentsEnglish learning is still in the primary stage.Besides different teaching methods are compatible to each other and have their own merits.So this paper chooses translation teaching method as the research subject in order to reflect and solve the problems in English teaching in senior high school.

1 Chapter 1 Introduction

As an effective foreign language teaching method,translation teaching method has flourished for a while.However,with the emergence and rise of other new teaching methods,translation teaching method was once rejected.In recent years,with the continuous appearance of the drawbacks of the direct,audio-visual,communicative teaching method and other teaching methods,translation teaching method has attracted the attention of academic group again.

Actually,translation is still an important learning method,and its influence for learning reading and writing can not be underestimated.Translation teaching method is helpful for students to memorize words,learn grammar structure,understand the original text and write English composition,and thus meets the needs of high school students to improve their comprehension ability and the speed of problem solving,because the English test in the college entrance examination mainly examines the studentsvocabulary mastery,reading comprehension and writing ability rather than oral expression.

Meanwhile,more and more people realize that single teaching method can not achieve the desired teaching purpose,therefore,they believe that different teaching methods are compatible to each other and have their own merits.All of these factors make it possible to improve the traditional translation teaching method to meets the contemporary social needs.And in this paper,high school studentsneeds for an easy and effective teaching method will be discussed.This paper also makes a systematic analysis and an objective evaluation of the status of translation teaching method in senior high school English teaching.

2 Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Review of Translation Teaching Method

Translation teaching method(or Grammar-Translation Approach)is the oldest foreign language teaching method,and its main representatives are H.Ollendorff and Jacotot.They summarize the practical experiences of the past teaching,and absorb the knowledge of the mechanical linguistics and psychology,these make translation teaching method a scientific foreign language teaching method.Translation teaching method was popular between 1840 and 1940,unfortunately it was later eliminated by its limitations which failed to meet the social needs.

2.2 Reasons for Using Translation as a Teaching Method

Mother tongue has a negative impact on foreign language learning,but it also has an important role in promoting peoples second language learning.In the process of second language acquisition,it is neither practical nor realistic to completely abandon their first language.So we can say mother tongue is a resource that can be exploited.The following parts explain how the translation teaching method improves the efficiency of teaching from three aspects:

2.2.1 Teachers translate their instructions to help students of different English proficiency levels to familiar with the class rules and learning contents,which ensure the smooth progress of teaching process.

2.2.2 In English language teaching,the mother tongue not only can be used to organize teaching activities,but also can be compared with English as a reference to help students understand and digest knowledge points.When teachers encounter abstract nouns and words with complex meanings in English teaching process,especially when teachers also find it difficult to explain in English,the translation teaching method can save teaching time and help students to understand words quickly,improving teaching efficiency.

Besides,teachersChinese explanation of teaching materials can improve studentsmastery of language knowledge and enhance studentsunderstanding of the language text.The understanding stage,is the first stage of the translation process,and its main content is to grasp the content of the article that the author wants to express(Delisle,61).Proper use of translation teaching in high school English teaching can help students to understand the two different cultures clearly and achieve the best purpose of foreign language learning.

2.2.3 The English level among students in high school is uneven,and many students dont have a good foundation in English listening,speaking,reading and writing.Therefore,the appropriate use of translation teaching method in classroom can not only improve teaching efficiency,promote studentsunderstanding of teaching content,but also improve studentsEnglish proficiency.At this time,if the translation method is used to explain the key points and difficulties in teaching materials,as well as summarize the main contents learned in classes,it can help the weak English learners to keep pace with the teaching progress and integrate into the classroom.

3 Chapter 3 Application of Translation Teaching Method in Senior High School English Teaching

One of the characteristics of translation teaching method is that teachers use both English and mother tongue to teach.In the process of teaching,Chinese translation with explanatory function is helpful for students to understand teachersinstructions and key knowledge of that class,which not only ensure the smooth of the class progress,but also take care of students of different English levels.

3.1 Translation Method in Vocabulary Teaching

Vocabulary is one of the basic materials of language learning,learning English is like building a house,vocabulary is brick,without the accumulation of words,the building of language is hard to build.In the process of English teaching,not all contents can be expressed clearly in target language or body language,and sometimes it is difficult to create scenarios to help students to understand and master certain English words,and with the help of Chinese translation explanation,it will be easier for students to understand.

3.2 Translation Method in Grammar Teaching

In the process of English learning,it is necessary for the students to improve their understanding of grammar and syntactic structure,and to find out the similarities and differences between English and mother tongue.For example:

Version 1 is basically consistent with the original English in word order and structure.Although version 2 is very different from the original in word order and structure,but more in line with the Chinese expression habits,because the Chinese mainly in short sentences.Through the translation of such sentences,students can understand and grasp the characteristics of the inverted sentence pattern and the difference of Chinese expressions.

3.3 Translation Method in Reading Teaching

In the teaching of reading,the appropriate use of translation method can help students to analyze the long and difficult sentences,to enhance the understanding of language and cultural knowledge,so as to achieve the double harvest of reading comprehension and English learning.The emphasis is on the studentsEnglish practical ability in the process of learning,rather than the results of one or two examinations.(Cao,84).

3.4 Translation Method in Writing Teaching

Writing is a process of expressing some understanding of the world through the creative writing.While translation is a process which one language is used to express the content of another language faithfully.

In the process of translation,students can develop the habit of modification and self correction ability which will be of great help to English writing.Translation and English writing are complementary to each other.

4 Chapter 4 Conclusion

English learning is a long process,and high school studentsEnglish learning is still in the primary stage.The most important part for high school studentsEnglish learning is to expand their vocabulary and grasp grammar.Although there are many shortcomings in translation teaching method,with the continuous improvement and development of foreign language teaching,this method will overcome its shortcoming and plays an important role in the whole high school English teaching.
