Application research of bamboo materials in interior design

Abstract：Under the background of the increasing shortage of global resources and environmental deterioration，the use of green materials has been gradually paid attention to. Based on this background，because bamboo has the performance advantages of short growth cycle，high strength and easy processing，bamboo has gradually become the first choice of interior design materials. This article first analyzes the development trend of interior design and the application situation of bamboo in interior design. Then，it introduces the two categories of bamboo，the advantages of bamboo in indoor application，analyzes the application scope of bamboo in indoor design，and provides positive significance for the application and development of bamboo in interior design in the future.

Under the background of various gradually serious ecological problems，with the proposal of green and sustainable development strategic goals，the field of interior design began to actively explore green decoration building materials，as recognized as green materials，bamboo has also been gradually attached importance to. Bamboo is a kind of natural resources，used as decorative materials and furniture materials，in line with the idea of green concept，but also can save natural resources，and reduce the pollution to the environment.

1. Development trend of interior design

With the continuous improvement of living standard，people more and more pursue high quality of life，and also put forward higher requirements for the indoor environment，the beauty and functionality of indoor space has met people's needs，now more pursuit is the concept of healthy and environmental protection life，in order to meet people's requirements，all walks of life began to gradually develop to the direction of green design. Interior decoration design should emphasize the use of green and environment-friendly decoration materials，but also should pay attention to the relationship between the interior design and construction and the ecological environment.

Today's urban development is constantly expanding，the social public activity space is gradually decreasing，the phenomenon of people not leaving home is more and more common，the lack of contact with nature，so people are more and more eager for nature. In the interior decoration，through the use of natural materials，planting green plants，to close our relationship with nature. At the same time，it also pays attention to environmental protection materials，the sustainable interior design concept to get close to nature，and make the living space more green and healthy. Based on this background，people pay more attention to green and environmental protection materials.This is the inevitable choice for people's healthy attitude towards life，but also the future development trend，and the excellent way to realize the harmonious development of man and nature①.

Modern design style makes the interior design assimilate. In order to pursue the design personality，people pay attention to the unique national culture and devote themselves to the design style of the traditional Chinese culture，decoration elements and decoration materials.

2 Application of bamboo in interior design

2.1 Application status of bamboo materials in interior design

Bamboo material unique texture，color and texture，as well as good toughness，smooth grain pressure resistance and tensile ability and other characteristics make it is favored by many industries②. The application forms of bamboo materials are diversified indoors. Bamboo can be used for furniture production，decoration of raw materials，floor，wallpaper，etc. Edward Bruto [West]pointed out in Bamboo Architecture and Design that bamboo is a new green building and interior construction decoration material in the 21st century . The bamboo house of the foot of the Great Wall in the commune，the facade consists of huge French glass and slender bamboo. As the raw material of the whole building，the sunlight is reflected through the bamboo forest，forming a light and shadow landscape of the four seasons.

2.2 Application category of bamboo materials in interior design

2.1.1 Original ecological bamboo

OriginalEcological bamboo refers to the bamboo is directly used as materials without chemical processing，manifested in the form of bamboo itself. Generally，bamboo can be decomposed into bamboo pole，bamboo tube，bamboo slices and other physical methods through cutting.

Bamboo pole is one of the most common forms of original ecological bamboo as a material. You can cut the bamboo pole into any length we want. Bamboo pole completely retain the bamboo toughness，smooth compression resistance and tensile ability. The height，color and the natural decorative lines of the bamboo pole will present a good visual effect. Bamboo tube is cut horizontally on the basis of bamboo poles，bamboo tube can be processed into daily necessities or with storage function，can also be decorated as the interface in the space，through the combination of different bamboo tubes，painted on the surface，as display decoration. Bamboo slices are thin bamboo cut on the surface of the bamboo. Different shapes can be cut as needed，arranged and painted to form decorations. Slender，flexible and thin bamboo slices are well prepared materials and can be made into daily necessities or decorations. No matter which form is the application of the original ecological bamboo in the interior design.

2.1.2 Bamboo material

Due to the natural characteristics of bamboo and the empty structure of the bamboo pole，the original ecological bamboo material has shortcomings，for example，the natural form of bamboo will produce differences，thin wall，uneven structure. In order to unify the visual effect，use certain technology to process bamboo materials and develop a series of bamboo materials. For example，bamboo plywood，bamboo and wood composite materials，bamboo integrated materials and independently developed by China and other products. Compared with the original ecological bamboo，the mechanical properties of bamboo material is more stable. You can also change the color of the bamboo material into mahogany color，bronze color and so on. Bamboo materials can be used for ground paving，wall board veneer，etc③.

2.2 Application advantages of bamboo materials in interior design

2.2.1 Security

Because the fragmentation，elasticity and toughness of bamboo materials are superior than ordinary wood，and its good smooth compressive strength and tensile strength.These properties enable the bamboo can be restored when the collision deformation，which is reflected in the bamboo has good seismic ability.

2.2.2 Continuity

Bamboo material is characterized by fast growth speed and short growth period. Bamboo growth cycle is a third of the general wood，and the yield is much greater than wood. The growth cycle of wood is 20 to 40 years，while bamboo can be made in four years，long is seven to eight years. Bamboo grows the fastest and absorbs more carbon dioxide as compared to other plants.

2.2.3 Durability

Bamboo material can better resist the corrosion damage of the surrounding medium，and the surface is not susceptible to friction and damage. Due to the good mechanical properties of the bamboo material，its tensile strength and compressive strength are far beyond that of ordinary wood. Compared with other wood，bamboo processed by special process can have a maximum service life of up to 30 years④.

3. Application scope of bamboo materials in interior design

3.1 Bamboo used as interface

The wall，ground and top surface account for a very large proportion in the whole interior space，and the different materials，colors and patterns in the space have different psychological feelings for people. Bamboo has good performance and decoration and can be used in the design of interface of space. In the laying of the ground，we should consider the wear resistance of the material. Due to the hard material，the bamboo material has a very high wear resistance and stroke resistance ability.

In the design of the New West Hollywood Library，the designers used bamboo profiles as decorative material on the top surface of the library. In the shape of the top surface，the top surface is divided into multiple regions of different sizes and shapes，and fluctuates up and down，forming different height differences in the top surface and producing rich levels.

3.2 Bamboo material used as an enclosed space

As a main form of enclosed space，the partition because of its separation and continuous characteristics requires that the material has bending and pressure resistance. Bamboo is widely used in the production of partitions.

Puyi Hotel is a bamboo-themed ecological hotel. In the design of the hotel，a large number of bamboo poles are used as the decoration of the interior space. In the design of the guest room space，the bamboo poles are arranged horizontally to form a partition separating the space. Bamboo pole partition not only meets the needs of the function，but also produces a good decorative effect.

In the Shanhai Tianjin Restaurant in Sanyang Square，Wuxi City，the designer uses the thin bamboo slices and easily curved characteristics to weave the bamboo into a curved half-surrounded partition，through which it separates different numbers of seats.The interweaving of bamboo slices makes the light and shadow left through the partition on the top surface also present an interspersed state，producing a rich light and shadow effect.

3.3 Bamboo material for furniture and interior furnishings

Bamboo has a wide range of applications，from simple interior furnishings to complex furniture design. Bamboo natural grain compression and tensile properties make it furniture and building materials，bamboo furniture has a long history. The earliest bamboo furniture is to design the original ecological bamboo directly into furniture. With the emergence of bamboo materials，the design of bamboo furniture has also changed，and the scope of bamboo materials applied to the furniture becomes larger.

The tea ceremony chair was designed by Japanese designer Hiroki Takada，who prototype the tool tea chasen in the traditional tea ceremony. The seat is made of thick bamboo plate as a support structure. In the design of the chair back，the bamboo board is subdivided to form a number of fine bamboo strips. The shape of the chair back is very similar to the brush at the end of the tea chasen. The seat uses thin bamboo strips to create a quiet atmosphere，sitting on a chair is like sitting in a bamboo forest⑤。

4. Summary

Through the above introduction of bamboo itself property and its application examples，we can see that bamboo can be developed and utilized as a building decoration material in China. Through the analysis of bamboo advantages and the application of bamboo is reasonable in interior design. Under the social background of economic development，the wide application of bamboo can save resources and protect nature. In the future interior design，we should pay attention to the use of bamboo materials.
