After public health, the next crisis coming from the novel coronavirus pandemic will be economic. In fact, here's how much the coronavirus is costing the world so far.The hardest hit will be small businesses, especially local businesses with storefronts. With people staying in and many cities issuing “shelter-in-place” orders, restaurants and local stores are taking a big hit, employees included.

As dining in a restaurant is no longer an option in much of the United States and leaving the house to visit a store has been restricted to only for essentials, many are wondering what can be done.Joe Cain,50,who lives in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco, had an idea and posted the following on Nextdoor:

“It's just a friendly notice that while we all shut ourselves in,the restaurants and small businesses in our neighborhood still need customers.A week of low sales can be hard and a few weeks can bedevastating.Rent and pay go on regardless, and a payroll tax break won't help as much as customers'cash.Consider getting takeout(not through an app),buying a gift card,or getting something extra to put in the freezer.Keep the cash flowing in the local economy.”

He followed that with a long list of local businesses people can support.“As soon as this stuff happened last week,I didn't go out anymore,” Cain said.“And I can imagine these business owners sitting there, trying to pay their employees and rent. They don't have cash coming in,and they're in a bind.”

Since he wrote the post on March 12,he has received some positive responses and has made a little gift card by himself.“I'm not a very wealthy person,so I can't buy gift cards for everybody, but I can at least broadcast that idea so more people can do some of this stuff,”he explained.

4.What is the author mainly concerned about in the text?

A.Health. B.Economy. C.Lifestyle. D.Convenience.

5.What does the underlined word “devastating” in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Harmful. B.Effective. C.Impressive. D.Unbelievable.

6.Which of the following is a suggestion in Cain's post?

A.Changing the freezer.

B.Buying food for others.

C.Donating money to business owners.

D.Trying to spend more money in stores.

7.Why did Cain post the list online?

A.To ask the rich for help.

B.To help business owners out.

C.To warn people not to go out.

D.To remind people to buy enough food.

Taking a course that teaches people about happiness is more effective at boosting(增加)life satisfaction than finding a partner or landing a job, recent research suggests. Some researchers from the London School of Economics and Political Science,Oxford University and University College London carried out a study on the Exploring What Matters course. The course is taught throughout the country and is run by volunteers, who have no formal training but bring people together to explore“the things that really matter in life”.

The study found that satisfaction levels of those taking part increased by one point, increasing from 6.4 out of 10 to 7.4 after the course.Researchers said that this increase was greater than the boost people would get from being partnered rather than single(+0.59),and being employed rather than unemployed(+0.7).

So far, more than 6,000 people in the UK have taken part in the eight-week course.People involved in the course learn how to cultivate happiness by taking positive action in their daily lives. They also learn how to have better relationships and create stronger communities.

“I was quite skeptical,” said Jo Newstead,a retired health worker in London. “But I really enjoy it.There are nice people from all different backgrounds and we usually have a full discussion. It has made me focus on what I can do to help improve things for myself and for others.”

Mark Williamson, director of Action for Happiness, was not surprised by the study's results.“This new research backs up what hundreds of people have already told us:taking part in these groups is life-changing,”he said.“But the thing we're most excited about is that people coming out of this experience not only feel better about themselves, but also feel more connected to others and want to do more for others,”he added.

8.What do we know about the course?

A.It is managed by volunteers.

B.It is not as effective as expected.

C.It is taught all year round.

D.It explores difficult things in life.

9.How does the author introduce the result of the course in paragraph 2?

A.By analyzing causes. B.By giving examples.

C.By describing processes. D.By making comparisons.

10.What is mainly discussed in paragraph 3?

A.Advantages of the course.

B.How to learn the course well.

C.What people learn in the course.

D.Problems to be solved during the course.

11.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Create a better world together

B.What really matters makes a difference

C.What decides people's happiness is being argued

D.Confident and humorous people live happily

Researchers used decades of measurements of earthshine to find that there has been a significant drop in Earth's reflectance(反射率)over the past two decades.Earth is now reflecting about half a watt(瓦)less light per square meter than it did 20 years ago, with most of the drop occurring in the last three years of earthshine data. That's the equivalent of a 0.5% decrease in Earth's reflectance.

“The reflectance drop was such a surprise to us when we analyzed the last three years of data after 17 years of nearly flat reflectance,”said Philip Goode,a researcher at New Jersey Institute of Technology and the lead author of the new study.

Two things affect the net sunlight reaching Earth:the Sun's brightness and the planet's reflectivity. The changes in Earth's reflectance observed by the researchers did not correlate with periodic changes in the Sun's brightness,so that means changes in Earth's reflectance are caused by something on Earth.

Specifically, there has been a reduction of bright, reflective low-lying clouds over the eastern Pacific Ocean in the most recent years. That's the same area, off the west coasts of North and South America, where increases in sea surface temperatures have been recorded because of the reversal of climatic conditions, with likely connections to global climate change.

The darkening of Earth can also be seen in terms of how much more solar energy is being captured by Earth's climate system.Once this significant additional solar energy is in Earth's atmosphere and oceans,it may contribute to global warming.

“It's actually quite concerning,” said Edward Schwieterman,a planetary scientist at the University of California,Riverside who was not involved in the new study.“For some time, many scientists had hoped that a warmer Earth might lead to more clouds and higher reflectance, which would then help to moderate warming and balance the climate system,” he said.“But this shows the opposite is true.”

12.How did Philip Goode feel about the drop in Earth's reflectance?

A.Excited. B.Puzzled. C.Worried. D.Amazed.

13.What caused the drop in the brightness of Earth?

A.More thicker clouds. B.Warming ocean waters.

C.Additional solar energy. D.Periodic changes in the Sun.

14.What is the result of fewer bright clouds?

A.Earthshine data will be gathered again.

B.Earth's climate system is out of function.

C.Unnecessary solar energy comes to Earth.

D.Earth and oceans become darker.

15.Why did many scientists expect more clouds?

A.To have a balanced climate system.

B.To prevent the climate becoming warmer.

C.To show their concerns over reflectance.

D.To explain the great importance of reflectance.

How to help a friend with a broken spirit

It can be difficult to see a friend in pain, especially if your friend has just suffered a broken spirit. While you can't fix your friend's problems or take away your friend's pain, you can support him or her in the healing process.

Listen. It's important for your friend to have someone he or she can trust.People who are hurting can benefit from feeling heard and understood, aiding in their catharsis(宣泄).If you're not sure how to be a good listener for your friend, ask what he or she needs.

Help your friend make a list.If you can help your friend make a list of how great he or she is,what his or her strengths are,or how great his or her life is,it can help your friend in the healing process. When you divert(轉(zhuǎn)移)your friend's focus away from the painful experience to something positive instead, you can help him or her start thinking and feeling more positive.

A.Have a releasing ceremony.

B.Feelings of sorrow have hurt your friend.

C.Set up times to meet up with your friend at the gym.

D.He or she may have trouble finding enjoyment in life.

E.See if your friend wants advice and respect his or her answer.

第二節(jié) (滿分25分)

閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語(yǔ)續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。

As I came into Middle School,Grade Six,I was really excited because my friend Jennifer was going to be in the same school with me!At first, things were great. She introduced me to her friend,Amy,and we had lots of fun together. Then things started to change.Jennifer was a very controlling person:I couldn't make new friends, because if I hung out with different people, she would decide that I was “mad at her and Amy”.So I didn't make new friends, and pretty soon being Jennifer's friend became a battle between Amy and me.

Jennifer wanted to be the “l(fā)eader” of our little group.Amy and I were never partners in class projects or gym;it was always,“Who gets the privilege(榮耀)of being Jennifer's partner.”It was either Jennifer liked me and she left Amy out or Jennifer liked Amy and she left me out.Amy and I both wanted to be Jennifer's number one.Being Jennifer's friend became the most important thing in the world.

I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after class,so we could walk together to our next class.Amy and Jennifer chatted at Jennifer's desk as Jennifer packed her books up and I waited by the door.Sometimes when they left, they'd walk right past me.No“Thanks for waiting”.No “Sorry we took so long”.It was as if they couldn't even see me.Yet I still waited after every single class.

Most of the time we gossiped(閑聊)about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good enough for Jennifer.Jennifer had a list of bad things about everybody, even Amy.And I'm sure she had a list of bad things about me,too. After months of living through school this way,I had really changed.I was moody, depressed and lonely.I didn't smile much.I spent lots of days trying not to cry.I felt so left out.

注意:續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右。

Finally, near the end of the school year,I got sick of being treated so poorly.__________________________________________________________________
