北碚山火救援志愿者Frank：重慶，雄起！

In the scorching August, multiple forest fires broke out in Chongqing.Facing the raging flames, Chongqing people quickly gathered together and pitched in to jointly safeguard their homeland with resilience and perseverance, displaying extraordinary courage and solidarity.

In a video clip about the firefighting in the Jinyun Mountains, a foreign friend carrying supplies and holding a chainsaw to the front line of the fire by motorcycle, was affectionately known to netizens as a “l(fā)ovely person”,“true friend” and “Sichuan and Chongqing brother”. He is Francis Stonier(known as Frank), a foreign associate professor in the Faculty of Education in Southwest University, whose Chinese name is “福蘭課(Fulanke)” and he has been called “Lao Fu”.

滾燙的八月，重慶多地突發(fā)山火，重慶人迅速集結(jié)，用堅(jiān)韌和頑強(qiáng)守護(hù)著自己的家園，展示了刻在骨子里的血性和團(tuán)結(jié)。

其中，一段在重慶市北碚區(qū)縉云山參與山火救援的視頻中，一名外國(guó)人身背物資、手持油鋸，乘坐摩托車(chē)奔赴滅火一線(xiàn)，被網(wǎng)友親切地稱(chēng)為“可愛(ài)的人”“真正的友人”“川渝兄弟”。他就是西南大學(xué)教育學(xué)部的外籍教授Francis Stonier（簡(jiǎn)稱(chēng)：Frank），中文名“福蘭課”，大伙兒都叫他“老福”。

“I shared a strong bond with Chongqing! Chongqing, Xiongqi(Cheer up)!”

“I brought clothing for about 3 days, first aid kits, bandages and other supplies before I went to the fire site, getting ready to stay in the mountains for a few days”, said Frank. Early in the morning of August 23, he and his companions came to a gathering place for volunteers in Xiema Subdistrict of Beibei.

According to Frank’s recollection, on the night of August 21, he learned that a fire broke out in Aoerping, Hutou Village in Xiema Subdistrict, which is located in the Jinyun Mountains. He quickly posted his experience and emergency measures to deal with wildfires on social media platforms,reminding firefighters and nearby residents to mind their safety and take responsive measures.

On August 22, deeply touched by the picture of exhausted firefighters lying on the ground, Frank immediately responded to the government’s urgent calls for volunteers who know how to repair and use chainsaws with other 5 companions, including He Wu, a professor at the School of Foreign Languages in Southwest University.

“Chainsaw is a very professional and powerful cutting tool. It should be used with know-how and its assembling requires more skills.” Frank said he is adept at the machinery and had also used chainsaws, so he hoped to offer help as soon as possible as he learned of the fire rescue needs.

“重慶人帶給我太多感動(dòng)！重慶，雄起！”

“出發(fā)前，我?guī)Я私?天的衣物，還準(zhǔn)備了急救箱、繃帶等物資，作好了在山上待幾天的準(zhǔn)備。”Frank說(shuō)，8月23日一早，他便和同伴來(lái)到北碚歇馬街道的一處志愿者集合點(diǎn)。

據(jù)Frank回憶，8月21日晚，他得知地處縉云山脈的北碚區(qū)歇馬街道虎頭村凹兒坪發(fā)生火情。他將自己積累的應(yīng)對(duì)山火的相關(guān)經(jīng)驗(yàn)和應(yīng)急措施，第一時(shí)間發(fā)布在社交平臺(tái)，友情提示滅火人員和附近的居民注意人身安全，做好應(yīng)對(duì)措施。

8月22日，F(xiàn)rank看到網(wǎng)上山火救援的消防員累癱在地上的照片，深受觸動(dòng)。在得知當(dāng)?shù)卣毙钑?huì)維修和使用油鋸的志愿者時(shí)，他立即響應(yīng)，并和西南大學(xué)外國(guó)語(yǔ)學(xué)院何武老師在內(nèi)的5位同伴一起加入。

“油鋸是一種非常專(zhuān)業(yè)的砍伐工具，威力很強(qiáng)，需要具備專(zhuān)業(yè)知識(shí)的人使用，組裝油鋸更是一項(xiàng)技術(shù)活。”Frank說(shuō)，他對(duì)工程機(jī)械類(lèi)比較擅長(zhǎng)，也曾使用過(guò)油鋸，當(dāng)?shù)弥交鹁仍枨髸r(shí)就希望能盡快上山幫忙。

組裝、加汽油、測(cè)試……所有工序一氣呵成。盡管酷暑難耐，起初只能跪在地上操作，F(xiàn)rank還是很快組裝好了第一把油鋸。在他的帶領(lǐng)下，幾名志愿者在兩個(gè)小時(shí)內(nèi)，保質(zhì)保量組裝了約50把油鋸，經(jīng)測(cè)試合格后被及時(shí)送往一線(xiàn)。

Assembling, adding gasoline, testing... all procedures were finished in one go. Despite the intense summer heat and the fact that he could only kneel on the ground to operate at first, Frank quickly assembled the first chainsaw.With his help, several volunteers assembled about 50 quality chainsaws in 2 hours. The chainsaws were sent to the front line timely after the testing for qualification.

“On the site, all volunteers must follow the instructions of on-site staff.Since life is the top priority and the risk of battling wildfire is too high,considering the personal safety of volunteers, I was eventually persuaded to return.” Frank felt regretful for not being able to stay in the mountains to combat the fire.

Reviewing this experience as a volunteer, Frank said, “I shared a strong bond with Chongqing! Chongqing, Xiongqi (Cheer Up)!” During the volunteer service, facing the tense circumstances, everyone dedicated themselves to their work without caring about the sweltering weather. Many people on the spot greeted him and gave him towels and water; the volunteer who carried him up the mountains was thin but played a key role in supporting the rescue work.

“If there were other emergencies in Chongqing in the future, I would still actively volunteer to assist in the rescue work and share with others how to be a good international volunteer. I believe that in Chongqing, this international metropolis, there are other foreign friends who are ready to help as I am.”Frank said determinedly.

“救援現(xiàn)場(chǎng)，所有志愿者聽(tīng)從工作人員統(tǒng)一安排。生命至上，森林火災(zāi)救援風(fēng)險(xiǎn)太高，考慮到志愿者的人身安全問(wèn)題，我最終被勸返。”Frank表示，對(duì)于沒(méi)能留在山上繼續(xù)救援，內(nèi)心非常遺憾。

回顧此次志愿服務(wù)經(jīng)歷，F(xiàn)rank說(shuō)：“重慶人帶給我太多感動(dòng)！重慶，雄起！”—志愿服務(wù)期間氣氛非常緊張，顧不上天氣炎熱，每個(gè)人都很投入地工作。現(xiàn)場(chǎng)有很多群眾和他打招呼，給他送毛巾和水。摩托搭載他上山的志愿者身材瘦小，卻在支援救援的過(guò)程中起到關(guān)鍵作用。

“如果重慶今后有其他的緊急情況，我還是會(huì)積極地去當(dāng)志愿者，協(xié)助救援，同時(shí)向大家傳達(dá)應(yīng)該如何做好一名國(guó)際志愿者。相信在重慶這座國(guó)際大都市里，還有其他的外國(guó)人和我一樣，也都愿意幫忙。”Frank堅(jiān)定地說(shuō)道。

“I love Chongqing! I’m planning to live here for the foreseeable future, possibly even retire here.”

Frank, 42-year-old, comes from Virginia, the U.S.

In 2008, when he was studying for a doctor’s degree in the U.S.,Frank visited Chengdu, Sichuan in China for academic exchanges. In just a few months, he fell in love with China. He also met a Chengdu girl and later married her, becoming a Chinese son-in-law.

Frank has been a professional educator for nearly 20 years. Prior to working in the university, he taught in a public school in the U.S. for 5 years. Later on, he has been devoting himself to teaching and scientific research in universities of China and the U.S. In 2018, the Southwest University launched a “Talent Program” to bring in high-end talents from overseas. Frank was invited to Chongqing as an associate professor in the School of Curriculum and Instruction in the Faculty of Education in Southwest University, focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology,Engineering, Art and Mathematics) education.

“Chongqing is an international metropolis with great inclusiveness.I love this city, local friends and its delicious foods, especially the Beibei District with outstanding people where my colleagues and students are living in”. Frank said he has been learning Chinese and wanted to learn Chongqing dialect. Having been paying the social insurance in Chongqing, he is going to apply for the Chinese “Green Card” so as to live here for the foreseeable future, possibly even retiring in Chongqing.

“我愛(ài)重慶！要在重慶退休養(yǎng)老”

Frank，42歲，來(lái)自美國(guó)弗吉尼亞州。

2008年，F(xiàn)rank在美國(guó)讀博士期間，作為學(xué)術(shù)交流人員到中國(guó)成都訪(fǎng)學(xué)。短短幾個(gè)月時(shí)間，他便深深地愛(ài)上了中國(guó)，還結(jié)識(shí)了一位成都女孩，他后來(lái)成為了中國(guó)女婿。

Frank從事教育職業(yè)近20年。進(jìn)入高校工作前，曾在美國(guó)公立學(xué)校擔(dān)任過(guò)5年教師，此后一直在美國(guó)和中國(guó)的大學(xué)擔(dān)任教員從事教學(xué)及科研工作。2018年，西南大學(xué)“聚賢工程”引進(jìn)海外高端人才，他受邀來(lái)到重慶，擔(dān)任該校教育學(xué)部課程教學(xué)研究院副教授，主攻STEAM（科學(xué)、科技、藝術(shù)、數(shù)學(xué)）教學(xué)領(lǐng)域。

“重慶是非常開(kāi)放包容的國(guó)際大都市，我非常喜歡重慶，喜歡重慶人和重慶美食。尤其喜歡人杰地靈的北碚，這里有跟我一起共事的同事和學(xué)生們。”Frank說(shuō)，他一直在學(xué)習(xí)中文，希望再學(xué)點(diǎn)重慶話(huà)。他還一直在重慶繳納社保，馬上要申請(qǐng)“中國(guó)綠卡”，希望能在重慶工作到退休養(yǎng)老。
