You may know that a little exercise is better than no exercise. But a 2022study has found that the intensity1 of your exercise can have an impact2 onyour health, too.
Of course, a walk to the shops does not have the same effect3 on ourbodies as running 10 kilometers. But researchers found that small changes tosimple4 activities could make a real difference. For example, the researchers saythat, instead5 of going for an easy 14-minute walk, it’s better for your heart ifyou go for a faster seven-minute walk.
The researchers looked at data from more than 88,000 people in the UK,with an average6 age of 62. They wanted to see how the intensity of people’sexercise impacted their heart disease7.
Those people’s physical activity was watched for one week using monitors8on their wrists9. The researchers then watched them for around seven more years. They took notes on any heart problems of those people.
It was found that, while just doing more exercisegives us smaller risk of heart disease, it could be evensmaller if we do some of our activity with greater intensity.
The researchers wrote that if we do 20%—instead of 10%—of our exercise at a moderate10intensity, it could cut down our risk of heartdisease by 14% . However, the researchers alsowrote that more activity of any intensity is helpful!
