Wendy Bennett was appointed executive director of AgSafe four years ago. Initially, she was unsure she had the skills and abilities needed to do the job. “There was nothing short of terror,” she said. “I certainly didnt have the educational background for it, although I have a good education.”
Despite seeking the help of a formal mentor (導師), Wendy still felt she could improve—this is when she decided she wanted to pursue further education. She saw UFreds EMBA program run by the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), of which she is a member. Wendy said that along with the coursework, learning from her peers and classmates and using their examples helped make her organization stronger and better. With her EMBA from UFred, Wendy believes she can now perform her job with confidence and that its also benefited the people she works with.

Wendys classroom experience gave her the confidence to communicate effectively to every level of her organization. She also sees a difference not only in how she deals with staff, but also in how she interacts with board members. She said the ability to be convincing and speak properly with regards to governance and how a board of directors can function excellently is something she previously wasnt skilled in.
“I can work with my board of directors to do a better job with strategic planning to move our organization into the future,” she said. While Wendy admits the EMBA program is a lot of work, its satisfying at the end of the day.

Whale researchers believe they have found a new way to measure the amount of stress felt by whales when they experience serious threats, such as being hit by a ship, and they say the technique could help protect the huge sea creatures from dying off.
American Rosalind Rolland is the lead scientist on the project. She and her team are with the New England Aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts. They measured stress hormones (激素) by studying baleen, a substance found in the upper part of the mouth of some kinds of whales. She explains that the baleen serves as a record that shows a spike in stress hormones when whales face dangers such as a changing climate and ship strikes. Scientists can then read these records, similar to reading the tree rings.
Understanding the information is important because whales that often feel stressed are less likely to be reproductive and more likely to become sick. That combination is not good for the whale population, which is already dangerously low.
The scientists did their work on a whale that had become trapped in fishing equipment, which some scientists estimate kills up to 300,000 whales and dolphins annually. It was finally killed by Inuit hunters who found it trying to escape from the fishing equipment. The hunters said the whale seemed to lack energy. When scientists examined the dead whale, they found its mouth showed an increase in stress hormones 20 times greater than normal.
Regina Asmutis-Silvia is a biologist with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation in Massachusetts. She didnt participate in the research, but she says it is important. “We clearly understand that stress is bad for humans. We also need to understand that stress is bad for other animals, too,” she adds.
28. What does the underlined word “spike” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Rise.? ? ? ? ? ? B. Change.? ? ? ? C. Crash.? ? ? ? ? ? D. Slide.
29. What may a whale living a stressful life be like according to the text?
A. Fierce and likely to attack ships. B. Sick and unlikely to survive.
C. Weak and likely to lose appetite. D. Unhealthy and unlikely to reproduce.

A. To move on to another topic.
B. To stress the importance of the finding.
C. To tell the necessity of studying other animals.
D. To show the similarity between humans and animals.
31. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The dangers whales often face. B. A way to protect whales.
C. A discovery about measuring stress of whales. D. The measures to stop sea life being hit.

Detecting drugs used to be a specific job for dogs, but now a drug detection team is welcoming some new colleagues—squirrels. Six Eurasian red squirrels were trained and approved for work responsibilities by police in Chongqing.
Squirrels have an acute sense of smell as they can smell food under a foot of snow. Small and swift, the “newcomers” are able to search for drugs in places which may be unapproachable for dogs, such as narrow spaces or tops of packages stacked high in warehouses. The squirrels have been trained to use their claws to scratch (撓) at boxes to draw their handlers attention if they detect drugs, according to local Chongqing police authorities.
“Our self-developed training system can be applied to the training of various animals,” Yin Jin, a police dog handler in Chongqing, told Global Times, adding that the training has really impressive results as the squirrels can quickly identify drugs. Although the system is intended for dogs, it can show some evidence on how squirrels are trained as well.
According to a research essay published in the journal China Working Dog which details the program, conditioning the animals reflexes (反射) is the key factor. First, the animals are familiarized with the targets smell and do special gestures when they smell their targets. For example, for explosive detection dogs, the handlers place pieces of cloth with the smell of the explosives next to the dogs food.
Next, the animals learn to search for the targets under various conditions. From a large number of luggage bags to people walking in crowds, the handlers create different scenarios (情景) to test the animals. If the animals successfully identify the location of the targets, they are then rewarded with snacks or other treats. The animals are soon able to search for targets naturally and actively, showing that the conditioned reflex has been built internally. Their training ends with practice sessions in real-life scenarios.
32. What advantage do squirrels have over dogs in drug detection?
A. They are easier to train.? ? ? ? ? ? ? B. They are smarter and quicker.
C. They have a sharper sense of smell.? ? ? ? D. They can better fit into small spaces.
33. What will the squirrel do when finding the target box?
A. Shake its tail.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? B. Scratch at the box.
C. Jump up and down on the box.? ? ? D. Sit on the box.
34. What does Yin think of their self-developed training system?
A. It still needs to be improved.? ? ? ? B. It will be introduced abroad.
C. It is effective in training squirrels.? ? D. It is limited to small animals.
35. A handler knows his detecting animals have developed conditioned reflexes .
A. when they can smell targets carefully
B. when they can search for targets voluntarily
C. when they can do different gestures flexibly
D. when they can detect targets in different scenarios

Born between 1995—2009, Generation Z is just entering the workforce. Its members are the first true digital natives. “Soft” skills such as intellectual insight, flexibility and creativity will be essential for workers to compete with robots that are growing more technically skilled. 36
Be an effective strategic communicator. Some employers fear that digital native workers might be too much like the robots they are competing with. 37 Its good communication skills that make them noticeable. Those in technology fields often work remotely or in relative isolation (隔離), so they do not always get enough time to sharpen their interpersonal skills. However, Generation Z should not ignore the importance of relationship building, listening, communicating and teamwork.
38 While most of Generation Z are still in school, they already need to think about how to continually adapt to a fast-changing world. To succeed, they must be realistic about their skills and how required skill sets will change. For example, graduates might be trained in Microsoft Excel, but a job might require them to learn how to interpret the data in those tables.
39 Nearly half of the Generation Z said they had experienced job burnout (精疲力竭) in the past year, according to a survey. 40 “Workers are at their best when doing something meaningful to them,” said Obed Louissaint, Senior Vice President of Transformation and Culture at IBM. “To avoid burnout, young people should couple finding purpose with taking proper mental breaks and try to build healthy habits,” Louissaint added.
A. Be a continuous learner.
B. Try to find interest in your work.
C. Find work that gives you a sense of purpose.
D. What will make Generation Z workers stand out?
