According to a new study from Oxford Economics, a rise in artificial intelligence will result in an increase in “income (收入) inequality” as they estimate that 20 million manufacturing jobs will be lost in the next 11 years. In China alone, there could be 14 million robots taking work currently done by humans by 2030. While in the United States, more than 1.5 million workers would have lost their employment to technology by 2030.
The report predicts the use of robots worldwide has increased to 2.25 million over the past two decades. The researchers said, “As a result of robotization, tens of millions of jobs will be lost, especially in poorer economies that rely on lower-skilled workers, which will therefore translate into an increase in income inequality.”
However, the researchers noted how “robotization” has the potential to boost productivity and economic growth. They predicted a 5.3 percent rise in global gross domestic product (GDP) in 2030. The report said, “This means adding an extra $4.9 trillion per year to the global economy by 2030 (in todays prices).”
The report remained positive about the use of automation and urged lawmakers not to stand in the way of robots in the workplace, despite the threat of job losses.
The researchers said, “These findings should not lead policy-makers to seek to prevent the adoption of robot technology. Instead, the challenge should be to distribute the robot profits more evenly by helping workers prepare for and adapt to the big changes it will bring about. Explore all policy options from training, initiatives (新方案) and new welfare programs such as universal basic income.”
28. What causes the potential job loss according to the text?
A. Population growth. B. Poor economy.

30. What do the researchers suggest to policy-makers in the last paragraph?

B. Providing citizens with lifelong education.
C. Slowing down the spread of robot technology.
D. Protecting workers interests while adopting robot technology.

Do we still need cash? The days of holding notes in our hands may be numbered. The advancement of technology of new electronic and mobile device in todays world is set to revolutionize how we make payments. With a click of a mobile-phone app, our entire wealth is literally at our fingertips. As digital forms are increasingly replacing cash payments, some think that we should become fully cash-free. However, I do not believe we should move towards a completely cash-free society.
One of the main concerns of a cashless world is the risk of cheating and the inconvenience that follows. The instant content that accompanies cashless transactions (交易) could be compromised by online security issues. Technology experts argue that our current state of technology is unable to provide a secure cashless environment that could prevent people from accessing the system illegally and abusing the personal data. In addition, many online shopping sites lack strong systems that would protect their customers personal data. Occasionally, when an account is “locked” due to a suspected cheating activity, having cash in hand becomes critical. In a cashless society, a victim of cheating would find himself locked out of his account and unable to access his money until the case is solved. Going cash-free causes great inconvenience in this case.
Another reason is that mankind might potentially become less thrifty (節儉的). Paying in cash causes a psychological pain on consumers so that they are more cautious in their spending. As it is, cashless payments have already eased that pain somewhat. Thus, an even more careless digital payment could make us much less thrifty.
The idea of cashless society is a very real, or even an exciting one. However, to safeguard the interests of all users, it is better to soften our enthusiasm—perhaps to be a less-cash society rather than a completely cashless one is a more working option.
32. What can replace the underlined word “numbered” in Paragraph 1?
A. Discussed. B. Reminded. C. Limited. D. Loved.
33. What is the authors worry about cashless transactions according to Paragraph 2?
A. The lack of safety. B. The loss of phones. C. Careless payments. D. The desire to purchase.
34. Talking about a cashless world, the author .
A. is directly against it B. gives a warm welcome to it
C. calls on it to come later D. hopes cash and cashless payments co-exist
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Going Against the Cashless Wave B. Going Completely Cashless Is True
C. Stopping Moving Towards Cashless D. We Do Not Need Cash Any Longer
