As soon as spring arrived, the young Lawrence MacEwen took off his shoes. Barefoot, he ran to school down the only road on Muck. Barefoot, he climbed to the top of Beinn Aircin, the highest hill, to look out to Knoydart and the Cuillin Hills. Barefoot, he stood for hours on the beach below his house, so mesmerized by these that he would not move until his mother called him in for tea.
Muck was a tiny place, the smallest of the Small Isles off Scotlands west coast. Lawrences family bought it in 1896 and made a decent living from it. Yet it was also left behind by the world. Most residents had moved away to softer places in the 19th century. By the late 1960s the MacEwens, too, were wondering whether or not to stay. Lawrences elder brother was set ongoing to the mainland and making Muck a summer-only place. But Lawrence knew he could never leave, being rooted there.
So he took Muck on, at 27, and for the next 50 years directed its future. He did not want to change it much. He worried about television, cars, and crowds of noisy tourists. On the other hand, visitors meant income (收入). Under his protection there was only one tiny hotel. There was still no pub, post office, or general shop. Nor, still, was there an easy harbor (港口), because to build on the best site would have damaged the beautiful view of the island. And the population, as for decades, remained around 40 souls.
But Lawrence was sure that 40 souls could keep Muck going, if they worked hard enough and pulled together. What the island needed was nothing sudden, but a spirit of community. He encouraged the islanders to plant trees.
He took over deserted gardens and set up polytunnels, so that everyone could grow vegetables. For a while his cows produced free milk for the whole island.
24. What does the underlined word “mesmerized” in Paragraph l mean?
A. Dominated. B. Surrounded. C. Attracted. D. Disturbed.
25. What did Lawrence do in the late 1960s?
A. He took over the island of Muck. B. He bought an island for his family.
C. He persuaded his brother to leave Muck. D. He made Muck a summer holiday center.
26. Why was Lawrence unwilling to build an easy harbor for Muck?
A. He thought it was unnecessary. B. He was afraid visitors wouldnt like it.
C. He didnt find a suitable location for it. D. He wanted to keep the view as it was.
27. What can be inferred about Lawrence from the last paragraph?
A. He encouraged self-sufficiency. B. He spoke highly of eco-tourism.
C. He made Muck world famous. D. He was strict with the islanders.

Scientists at MIT have managed to change ordinary spinach (菠菜) plants into natural sensors (傳感器) which can find chemicals used in bombs. The secret to giving spinach these special powers is nanotech (納米技術), which is scientific area that deals with making or changing things that are extremely tiny.
“Ordinary spinach plants can be found everywhere and easy to store; like other plants, they normally take in carbon dioxide gas,” the scientists say. “But actually they can sense small changes of soil and water potential and respond to them. If we make use of this point, there is a wealth of information to access.” Thats what the scientists use to power their tiny experiments.
For this experiment, the scientists placed two different kinds of tiny nano-materials into spinach plants. To get them into the plants, the scientists put a liquid containing them on the bottom of the plants leaves. As part of its natural process, the spinach plant pulls water through its roots and into its leaves. If the water contains certain chemicals used in bombs, the tiny sensors in the leaves make the nano-tubes, which, along with the sensors, were placed into the spinach plant before by the scientists, produce a slightly special kind of light. By watching the plant constantly using a camera attached to a cheap computer, the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals from explosives are found in the water.
The computer the scientists used is about the size of a playing card. They say that in the future, their system could even use a cellphone with its camera changed slightly. Discovering chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many uses the researchers are exploring. They have used such plants to discover several other dangerous chemicals as well. From their point of view, theres no doubt that in the future, such systems could give farmers specific information about the health of the land and water on their farms.
28. Why do the scientists use spinach plants to do the experiment?
A. They are common in the daily life. B. They are environmentally responsive.
C. They absorb much carbon dioxide gas. D. They are small in size and easy to store.
29. What is the function of the carbon nano-tubes placed into spinach plants?
A. To control the camera. B. To contain the liquid.
C. To fix the tiny sensors. D. To give off plant light.
30. What can we learn about the application of the experiment?
A. Its diverse. B. Its unexpected. C. Its limited. D. Its complicated.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Spinach Sends Warning Emails Using Nanotech
B. Spinach Is Sensitive to Chemicals in Bombs
C. Nanotech Helps Spinach Grow Healthily
D. Nanotech Protects Spinach from Danger

Do you need a human to create a beautiful perfume? Thats the question being asked as artificial intelligence (AI) starts to enter the perfume industry. Companies are increasingly turning to technology in order to create more best-selling, unique perfumes that can be produced in just minutes.
Last year, Swiss-based perfume developer Givaudan launched Carto, an AI-powered tool to help perfumers. Using a touch screen, the perfumers can choose one from 1,500 ingredients and put it in a bottle without touching them and pull together different perfumes using data from the brands vast library of perfume formulas (配方). A small robot immediately processes the fragrances (香味) into perfumes, making it easier for perfumers to test their new perfumes.
One benefit of Carto is that with it, perfume samples are created instantly, giving them a competitive advantage. “We can adjust the perfume almost live with the customer,” says Calice Becker, vice president, perfumer and director of the Givaudan Perfumery School. “It is a big plus not just because we gain time but theres more closeness when we connect in front of the tool.”
German perfume house Symrise has gone one step further and teamed up with IBM Research to create an AI system called Philyra, which actually studies the perfume formulas and customer data to produce new perfumes. Like Carto, Philyra cant actually smell anything. Claire Viola, vice president of digital strategy fragrance at Symrise, is the first to agree it hasnt been without weakness. “Its machine-learning and sometimes the results are wrongs,” she says. “You have to qualify every new material, so it understands the difference between different perfumes, for example.”
Margaux Caron, global beauty analyst for color cosmetics and perfumes, believes AI is a powerful tool to create perfumes. “Technology and science are sometimes pictured and considered cold, but the perfume category is displaying a warm, emotional, human approach to it. The partnership between AI and perfumers is anchored in this philosophy,” she said.
32. What is the advantage of Carto?
A. It can be used to test perfumes. B. It can tell perfume ingredients apart.
C. It frees perfumers totally from the task. D. It helps make perfumes meet customers needs.
33. What can we infer about Philyra from Claire Violas words?
A. It needs to be improved. B. It has a sharp sense of smell.
C. Its study result is accurate. D. Its weakness is unable to overcome.
34. What is Margaux Carons attitude toward using AI?
A. Supportive. ? B. Objective. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.
35. What is the authors purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce new perfume brands. B. To explain how to make perfumes by AI.
C. To discuss AIs strengths and weaknesses. D. To show application of AI in making perfumes.

As Mom and I stood in line waiting to cash out at the retail store, I studied the customer in front of us who was reading the magazines to our left. She was young, maybe early twenties, but she already had a stoop (駝背), looking very tired.
The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat and meal materials like pasta, rice, and potatoes. Day-old bread, bargain soap, and inexpensive shampoo (洗發劑) completed her purchases—well, almost. In the corner sat a little doll and a pretty dress that was 50 percent off. She continued to look at the magazines as we waited, and more people lined up behind us. She turned around and asked Mom for help.
“Im sorry to bother you,” she began shyly. “But can you tell me how much this is? I forgot my glasses at home.” “Of course,” Mom said. When Mom finally found the small print and told her, she sighed quietly and put it back.
“Next!” The cashier called and she moved forward to begin her trade. When the store employee finally figured everything out and told her the cost, the womans face paled. It was obvious that she didnt have enough money, and she looked at her groceries to see what she could do without. One by one, she removed things, but it was still not enough. She continued to take much-needed goods out while the cashier patiently deducted (扣除) things.
The childs items remained in the cart, however. In fact, the palm of her other hand lay protectively across them, as if she didnt want to be tempted to abandon them. The woman finally paid, and moved down to bag them.
When our turn came, Mom pointed to the pile of items the woman had taken out, added all our meat and fresh milk, and whispered “Separate bags, same bill please” to the cashier. She nodded, even though it was a “pack your own” kind of store.
注意:續寫詞數應為 150左右。
The cashier went on with her work, and Mom and I picked up all the items.
The woman turned and looked at my mom in surprise.
