At the invitation of the CPAFFC, Mrs. Alix Boyd Knights, speaker of the House of Assembly of the Commonwealth of Dominica, and her party paid a visit to Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai. Gu Xiulian, vice chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and president of the All-China Women’s Federation, met with and entertained Mrs. Knights and her party. There were senators, secretary general of the Cabinet and chief of the police accompanying Mrs. Knights on the visit to China. In her meeting with Mrs. Knights, Vice Chairperson Gu Xiulian briefed about the work of the Chinese National People’s Congress and China’s policy and practice in protecting women and children. Mrs. Knights expressed her gratitude for giving them a grand reception, praised the hospitality of the Chinese people, and reiterated that Dominica would persist in one China policy and said that this was the basis of the relations between the two countries.

Mrs. Knights is speaker of the House of Assembly and a professional lawyer. She likes cooking very much. In about 20 years before working as a lawyer, she ran a cooking school and served as principal of the school. During her stay in Beijing, Mrs. Knights demonstrated Dominican culinary art on Delicious Food, a programme of the Beijing TV Station. That day, Mrs. Knights high in spirit and dressed in national costume did the cooking while discussing the culinary art with the special-class Chinese chef. After that, she was gladly interviewed by a reporter from the Beijing Youth Daily.
Mrs. Knights and her party had only one day to visit Xi’an, and it happened to be Sunday. Mrs. Knights asked to go to a Catholic church to attend Mass. The hosts immediately arranged it for them. The priest who said Mass specially added warm and friendly words during praying to welcome these special friends, which made Mrs. Knights and her party deeply touched. In Shanghai, at the request of the guests, some famous professors of the traditional Chinese medicine gave acupuncture treatment to Mrs. Knights and some of the members of the delegation.
A short 6-day visit ended. Bringing along with them the Chinese people’s friendship and beautiful impressions of the ancient yet thriving Beijing and Xi’an, and the ever changing international metropolis Shanghai, Mrs. Knights and her party were reluctant to leave China. She said, “I will definitely come back.”
