他究竟從事什么職業？

Dick was a clever boy， but his parents were poor， so he had to work in his spare time and during his holidays to pay for his education. Because of this， he managed to get to the university. But it was so expensive to study there that during the holidays he had to get two jobs at the same time so as to earn enough money for his studies.

One summer he managed to get a job in a butcher's shop during the daytime， and another in a hospital at night. In the shop， he learned to cut meat up quite nicely. So the butcher often let him do all the serving. In the hospital， on the other hand， he was allowed to do only the simplest jobs， like helping to lift people and to carry them from one part of the hospital to another. Both at the butcher's shop and at the hospital Dick had to wear white clothes.

One evening at he hospital， Dick had to help to carry a woman from her bed to the operating room. The woman happened to be one of his customers. She was already feeling frightened at the thought of the operation before he came to get her. But when she saw Dick， that almost finished her.

\"No！No!\" she cried. \"Not the butcher! I won't be operated by the butcher!\" Then she fainted away.

狄克是個聰明的男孩，可是他的父母很窮。為了付學費，他利用課余和假期時間打工。正是因為打工，他才得以上大學。可上大學的費用太高了，為了掙到足夠的錢來維持學業，他不得不在假期同時打兩份工。

一個暑假，他得到了兩份工作，一份是白天在肉店干活，另一份是晚上在醫院干活。在肉店，他學會了切肉，肉切得又快又熟練，所以賣肉的老板常常讓他做各種活計。而在醫院，院方讓他做最簡單的工作，比如幫忙抬病人，把病人從醫院的一頭抬到另一頭。在肉店和醫院，狄克都得穿白大褂。

在醫院的一天晚上，狄克需要幫著把一個女士從她的病床上抬到手術室里。碰巧這位女士是他肉店的一名顧客。在狄克來抬她之前，她就已經因要做手術而嚇得心驚膽戰了。一看到狄克，她差點給嚇死。

“不!不!”她大叫。“不要屠夫!我不要屠夫給我做手術!”說完就昏了過去。
