Legendary Hollywood director Steven Spielberg hit the headlines in February with his decision to withdraw his involvement in the Olympic opening ceremonies.

Spielberg – the man behind such Hollywood blockbusters as Schindler's List， Saving Private Ryan， Jurassic Park and Close Encounters of the Third Kind – told reporters that he wouldn't be carrying out his duties as the ceremony's artistic adviser due to the Chinese government's policy over Sudan and the conflict in Darfur.

In his statement on February 12th， Spielberg said Sudan's government shouldered the bulk of responsibility for \"these ongoing crimes\" in Darfur and that \"the international community， and particularly China， should be doing more to end the continuing human suffering there.\"

Spielberg said that he had intentionally not signed a contract that the Beijing Organizing Committee offered him a year ago. Instead， he said: \"I have made repeated efforts to encourage the Chinese government to use its unique influence to bring safety and stability to the Darfur region of Sudan. Although some progress has been made along the way... the situation in Darfur continues to worsen， and the violence continues to accelerate.\"

The director's comments raised a storm of protest in the Chinese media and across China's incredibly active blogosphere. Many condemned the director's decision as \"unacceptable\" and \"an outrage\". One netizen pointed out that \"First of all， it is meaningless for any artist or athlete to involve himself into politics. Secondly， some aspects of the foreign media are always prejudiced with regards to China's attitude toward some countries' political situation. As a celebrity， Spielberg tries to interfere in China's internal affairs too much.\"

Posters on the English-language video site YouTube have also labeled him a \"hypocrite\"， citing the director's advocacy of the Iraq war as proof of what they call his \"two-faced attitude\"， and on scores of major Chinese web sites and portals internet users left thousands of comments expressing their anger at Mr. Spielberg's decision.
