Sad 無聊
Jo: We will look at words and phrases that you might not find in your English textbooks. I'm Jo.
Helen: And I'm Helen.
Jo: That word is sad. S.A.D.
Helen: Yes sad,
Jo: The word sad might be used to mean something isn't very fashionable or interesting.
Helen: Sad
Jo: So, for example, I am a big fan, Helen, of a 1980s American TV show called Dallas. I thought it was a really entertaining show and I have started to buy the DVDs of every series to watch.
So I could say you are sad.
Jo: Yes I'm afraid that part of me is quite sad. Now there must be something about you that's quite sad Helen.
I love looking at maps— I could look at them for hours!
Jo: Now that is quite sad.
Insert
A: What are you looking at on the computer there?
B: Oh no, you've caught me. I am looking at telescopes.
A: Telescopes?
B: Yes, I wanted to buy a telescope. I really like looking at the stars at night — really sad, I know.
Jo: And that's all from our BBC Learning English Real English programme for today. Bye for now.
Cocky
Jo: I'm Jo.
Helen: And I'm Helen.
Jo: Today's word is cocky. C.O.C.K.Y. cocky.
Helen:
Jo: Well a cocky person is someone who is very self-confident and perhaps a little arrogant.
Jo: It's quite an informal word used in a disapproving way.
Jo: So for example, someone you work with might think they know everything really well and make you feel less important because you don't know how to do certain things.
Insert
A: He really gets on my nerves— he thinks he's so wonderful!
B: Yeah he is a bit cocky isn't he?
A: Linda ran the marathon in four hours— I could easily beat that!
B: Don't get too cocky — it took you two and half hours to run a half marathon!
Jo: Actually Helen, I've been studying Chinese recently and I'm getting really good.
Jo: Erm
Jo is getting a bit cocky!
Jo: Anyway that's all from Real English. If you want to learn more words and expressions like you have today. See you again soon.
