Guangzhou of China established friendship-city relations with Gwangju of the Republic of Korea in 1996. In the past decade and more since the twinning of friendship ties, the two cities have actively carried out economic, trade, cultural, educational and sports exchanges and cooperation and obtained fruitful results. In 2006, with the approval of the City Council, the Gwangju municipal government decided to recommend one of the mayors of its sister cities as Honorary Mayor of Gwangju. Meanwhile, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the twinning of friendship-city ties with Guangzhou and to show appreciation of the efforts Guangzhou Mayor Zhang Guangning had made to develop the friendly relations between the two cities, the Gwangju municipal government decided to nominate Mayor Zhang the first Honorary Mayor of Gwangju. In September 2006, Park Gwang-tae, mayor of Gwangju, led a 38-member government and art delegation to visit Guangzhou, during which he presented the plate of Honorary Mayor of Gwangju to Zhang Guangning. On November 1, 2007, Mayor Zhang Guangning headed a delegation to Gwangju for a return visit. On the evening of the same day, Mayor Park handed the certificate and the medal of honorary mayor to Zhang Guangning at Gwangju Culture and Art Hall. The conferring of the title on Mayor Zhang has not only symbolized the deep friendship between the two cities, but also showed the fruitful results achieved in the exchanges between them in recent years. After the conferring ceremony, artists from Guangzhou gave a special performance entitled Splendid Friendship Cites.
