恐怖片的實用地道英語

恐怖片《生于某月某日》。由曾得過奧斯卡最佳女配角的金碧辛嘉(Kim Basinger)領銜主演。

開場不久，金碧辛嘉的妹妹突然在梯間出現，像鬼魅一樣把金碧辛嘉嚇了一跳。我們也看得不寒而栗！

原來演妹妹的女配角帶著剛生下來的女嬰來投靠女主角金碧辛嘉。

女主角照料妹妹的女兒時問妹妹誰是女嬰的父親。

女主角：Who's the father ?

女配角：Beats me.

女主角：Beats you ?

Beats me 是什么意思呢？

大家切勿把這句話直解為“打我吧”。

也不要把女主角金碧辛嘉說的“Beats you ?”直解為“打你？”。

Beat me這句地道英語慣用感嘆句(idiomatic interjection)是It beats me的省主詞慣用感嘆詞，作主詞(subject)的代詞It是指對方問的問題，beats me是“考起我了”，引申為“我不知道”。

女主角金碧辛嘉接著問：Beats you?意思是：“你不知道？”言下之意是“你剛生下這個女嬰，竟然連誰是孩子的父親也不知道”，覺得自己這個親妹太不長進了。

你問外國人一個問題，對方答beats me可不是叫你打他揍他，千萬不要誤會。

英美人表達“我不知道”“我不清楚”，近年流行的用語還有：

Search me.

I don’t have a clue.

I have no idea.

最近看英文電視臺的《大衛牙擦騷》(David Letterman Show)一個有獎問答游戲環節，主持發問后，參加游戲的美國太太答不出，于是說：You got me on that one（你那個問題難倒我了）。那也是近年很流行的口語講法。

I asked a colleague of mine how he liked the shirt his daughter had given him as a gift. \"The color and the design are nice，\" he said. \"But the sleeves are three inches too long.\"

I suggested that perhaps it was made for a much taller man. \"I don't think so，\" he said. \"If I stand on my toes， it still fits the same.\"

難解的問題
