1月1日，山東省最后一個貧困縣沾化縣宣告脫貧。

1月8日，濟南高新技術產業開發區與山東省科學院聯合創辦的中國第一家科研機構——科技創業園正式成立。

1月9日，濟南、青島、泰安、煙臺、威海、曲阜獲首批“中國優秀旅游城市”。山東省居各省、市、自治區榜首。

3月26日，中國至澳大利亞首條集裝箱班輪航線首航式在青島港舉行。這是中國海運業第一條直達澳洲的航線。

March 26， the maiden voyage of the first container liner ship between China and Australia began in Qingdao. This was the first shipping line directly leading from China to Australia.

7月6日，濟南黃河第二公路大橋、濰坊至萊陽高速公路竣工通車。至此，山東高速公路通車里程已達1085公里，成為中國第一個高速公路超千公里的省份。10月31日濟南至泰安高速公路正式通車。至此，山東省高速公路通車里程達1359公里，居全國首位。

July 6， the No. 2 Highway Bridge over the Yellow River in Jinan and the Weifang-Laiyang Expressway were open to traffic. Expressway mileage open to traffic in Shandong Province had now hit 1，085 kilometers. On October 31， the expressway between Jinan and Tai’an was open to traffic. The expressway mileage open to traffic in Shandong Province then hit 1，359 kilometers， ranking top nationwide.

9月25日，泉城廣場等省城三大工程竣工。1997年6月15日召開的中共山東省委常委擴大會議，根據濟南長遠發展的需要和城市建設中存在的薄弱環節，提出“用5年左右的時間，使濟南的城市面貌有明顯改觀，綜合經濟實力和服務功能明顯增強”的要求，確定了濟南機場擴建、繞城高速公路一期、泉城廣場、濟南污水處理廠管網配套、兩個水泥廠遷建、市區燈亮工程六大重點工程。此日竣工的泉城廣場、濟南機場擴建以及趵突泉擴建工程既是對建國50年的獻禮，也是這“六大工程”的重要組成部分，特別是前兩項工程的竣工，使省委確定的“六大工程”全部完成，從而揭開了省城建設史上的新篇章。

2月19日，青島港務局與英國鐵行集團屬下澳大利亞港口公司正式簽訂青島港前灣二期集裝箱碼頭合資合同，該項目總投資1.7676億美元，其中外資占49％的股份。這是全省目前基礎設施領域外商直接投資規模最大的項目。

February 19， Qingdao Port Authority and Hutchison Port Holdings of PO signed a joint-venture contract with total investment volume of 176，760 million US dollars on the construction of the second phase of the container port at Qingdao Qianwan Harbor. PO accounted for 49 percent of the shares.

2月23日，山東省第一座(國內第四座)抽水蓄能電站——泰山抽水蓄能電站開工建設，工程動態投資43.26億元。

February 23， construction of Tai'an Pumped Storage Station—the first pumped storage station in Shandong Province (the fourth in China) was started. The dynamic engineering investment was 4.326 billion yuan.

2月23日，國內單線生產能力最大、自動化程度最高的高端計算機生產線在浪潮集團總部正式投產使用。

3月13日，由墾利縣海洋與水產局承擔的“濱海鹽堿地滲水對蝦精養高產技術研究”課題通過鑒定。該項目在國內尚屬首創，其技術達到國內領先水平。

5月15日，由中國孔子基金會、曲阜師范大學聯合海內外捐資者共同創辦的中外合作孔子文化大學暨山東儒學研究基地在曲師大成立。

9月18日，在悉尼奧運會體操男子團體決賽中，由山東小將邢傲偉和另外5名選手組成的中國男子體操隊，奪得男子體操團體冠軍，實現了山東奧運金牌零的突破。19日，山東運動員林偉寧獲得悉尼奧運會女子舉重69公斤級冠軍。

September 18， at the men’s gymnastics team final at the Sydney Olympic Games， the Chinese team of Xing Aowei and other five gymnasts were champions in men’s team competition， which was the first gold medal Shandong won at the Olympic Games. On September 19， Shandong athlete Lin Weining won gold in the women’s 69 kilogram weightlifting competition.

12月12日煙臺開發區通過了國家環保總局、省環保局、中國環科院環境管理體系認證中心等部門的鑒定，成為全國第五家、全省第一家ISO14001國家級生態示范區。

December 12， Yantai Development Zone became the first (fifth nationwide) national level ecological demonstration zone accredited by the ISO14001 Environmental Management System.
