



The China-Japan Green Expo 2011, held in early June, marks the first large-scale cooperation between the two countries, after Japan’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.Companies based in China and Japan, Chinese government ministries and other organizations attended the expo to exhibit products and technologies that promote environmental conservation. In addition, experts from industry, government and academia hosted seminars to introduce environment-related technologies.The expo, based on the two countries’ consensus reached at the high-level talks between the two countries, has attracted many renowned Chinese and Japanese enterprises, leading industrial parks and cities in respect of green environment and green economy, said Wan Jifei, Chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade(CCPIT), at the opening ceremony.In the field of environmental protection, China boasts a huge market, while Japan has advanced technologies, equipments and rich experience, so there is great potential for the two sides’cooperation,” said Bai Lichen, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC. “This expo has provided a precious platform for the cooperation between the two sides.”The expo, held just before the World Environment Day, will surely enhance the two countries’ cooperation in the field of environmental protection, said Hiromasa Yonekura, who leads the delegation of the Japanese Business Federation.“We have a lot for cooperation, such as water treatment,” Fumiaki Watari, Chairman of the Board of Councils, Japan Business Federation, told China’s Foreign Trade.Over 50 well-known companies from both countries participated in this expo, showcasing their new advances in recycling and other environmentally friendly initiatives.Based on its“Action for Green”environmental vision, Canon aims to realize sustainable growth through technological innovation and improved management efficiency.At the event, Canon introduced its environmentally friendly technologies incorporated in the company’s environmental frontrunning image RUNNER ADVANCE series of color multifunction office systems.Moreover, the booth included an introduction to GREEN NAVI, a Japanese-language website that provides information on methods for selecting and using environmentally conscious products. The website also offers such features as a simulation that calculates CO2 reductions based on how a product is used, and when used cartridges are collected and recovered.In addition, Canon showcased digital cameras, which are designed and produced with the environment in mind, and inkjet printers, which feature reduced energy consumption.Panasonic’s theme was its energy solutions from entire homes to entire towns. The group demonstrated its advanced technologies and services to realize energy solutions for entire towns. In addition to expanding its energy solutions to buildings, stores and public facilities, the company has been connecting and applying them to entire towns focusing on energy creation, energy storage, energy saving and energy management.For instance, its Entire Home Corner showcased a green lifestyle with virtually zero CO2 emissions which will be realized in three to five years by introducing Eco Ideas House at Panasonic Center Tokyo. In addition to energy-saving air conditioners, washing machines and refrigerators, Panasonic proposed the lifestyle combining energy creation and energy storage. The energy solutions focusing on Smart Energy Gateway (SEG), which controls energy by linking every device and equipment at home, was also demonstrated.Its Entire Town Corner includes energy solutions for homes, buildings, stores and public facilities through connecting energy creation, energy storage and energy saving focusing on SEG. This will contribute to the realization of green lifestyle with integrated management of energy and information by linking all equipment and facilities. The recent initiatives such as SinoSingapore Tianjin Eco-City in China and Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town in Japan were introduced.Sony, with its theme “Road to Zero”, showcased its various advanced products, some of which have been in use and some still in tests. For instance, its dye-sensitized solar cells can achieve energy conversion efficiency of 9.9 percent; the bio-energy battery can generate electricity from a bottle of Coke or any other sweet beverage; its recycled plastic SoRPlas is efficient in CO2 emissions with the recycling rates as high as 99 percent.China also has its demonstrations at the expo. Shanxi showed its model for coal-electricity cycling economics. Automakers like BYD Auto and Cherry brought their technologies in electric cars.“In the filed of low carbon industry, Japan set us a good example. We have so much to learn from them, such as policy making and criteria in energy conservation, planning, etc.,” Hu Xiulian, professor with Energy Research Institute of National Development and Reform Commission, told the reporter at the Sino-Japan Low Carbon Development Forum during the expo.As China has such a huge market, we can share some ideas and cooper- ate in low carbon industry, said Junichi Fujino, Senior Researcher with the Social Environmental System Research Center of National Institute for Environmental Studies.In the five-year plan, China has revealed that renewable energy’s ratio in the total energy mix will be 11.4 percent by 2015 and 15 percent by 2020. During the same period, the carbon intensity per unit of GDP will be reduced by 17 percent, China Daily reported.Report shows that In the past five years, China’s industry has grown by 11.6 percent annually while the energy consumption per unit of added industrial value had dropped by 26 percent accumulatively and 750million tons of standard coals had been saved.The expo is the first international exhibition jointly organized by JapanChina Green Expo Management, a non-profit organization established by Keidanren (Japan Federation of Economic Organizations) and CCPIT.
