Tough Hu Jun: a Hangzhou Native
By Zeng Yulin
I start my interview with Hu Jun, a Hangzhou native and film actor well known for his signature tough-guy image, by asking him how many films and television series in which he have starred were made in Hengdian World Studios, a Chinese Hollywood located in central Zhejiang. He thinks about it and says four. The interview takes place in his hometown Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province. He says he comes home for a visit to Hangzhou whenever he has an acting assignment in Hengdian.
With a muscular build, the 1.85-meter-tall Hu Jun looks tough and mature. Most characters he has impersonated so far fall in the category of tough guys: a test pilot that flies high-tech jet prototypes under development, a truck driver hurt by a failed romance, a fierce general, an assassin, a kongfu hero, an emperor. “Whisper of Winds”, a spy story set in the Second World War, portrays an intelligence agency that tries to crack the coded Japanese telegraphs. Hu Jun acts as the director of the secret agency. In the series, no one is a maniac but everyone is shrewd with the ways of the world and everyone acts with an amazing will power. Hu Jun’s interpretation of the proud, capable, confident and arrogant director is convincing. Hu comments: “Of all the acting assignments I have had in Hengdian, this one is most memorable.”
As a tough hero in various films and television dramas, Hu Jun has a large following of female fans. So when this topic popped up in our conversation, Hu Jun became serious. He explains his life this way: “I am a man and I take my responsibility most seriously. My work frequently takes me away from home. Getting hurt and tired is normal in my line of work, but I never talk about these occupational hazards at home. I do not want my family to get worried. I have nothing to complain about since I am an actor. Well, rumors are nothing since I know they are totally groundless.”
In everyday life, Hu Jun is a man who gives top priority to friendship and loyalty, just like the heroes he characterizes on the screen. “With my friends, I am not an actor at all. Sometimes my friends wag their finger at me saying I am being ridiculous. I admit being ridiculous. I often dine and wine with my friends and then go to a bar and chat. To be frank, I never disguise myself when I go outside for a walk or a meal around Hengdian. I never wear dark glasses. If people recognize me and point at me, so what? Nothing to worry about.”
Hu says, “Liu Jialing (Carina Lau) is a good friend of mine. I visit her whenever I am in Hong Kong and she comes to see me whenever she is in Beijing. When she celebrated her birthday last time, I opened the door and asked all the paparazzi outside to say happy birthday to her. I don’t care what they say in the next day’s newspapers. I am in my forties but I expect to outperform myself in my career in the future and get myself in the best physical and spiritual shape to enjoy life.”
