（一）Do You Know Who I Am？

你知道我是誰嗎？ It was the final examination for physics at the college. The exami-nation was two hours long， and the exam papers were given. The professor （教授） told the class that any exam paper which was not on his desk in two hours would be refused and the student would fail. A student came rushing in and asked the professor for an exam paper after the exam had been on for half an hour.

“You’re not going to have time to finish this，” the professor said slowly as he gave the student a paper. “Yes， I will，” answered the student. He then took a seat and began writing. After two hours， the professor began to call for the exam papers， and the students stood up and put them on the professor’s desk， all except the late student， who was still writing. Half an hour later， the last student came up to the professor who was busy writing something. He tried to put his exam paper on the stack （摞） of the other papers already there.

“No， you can’t. I’m not going to take that in. It’s late.” The student became worried. He thought for a while， and then he asked the professor， “Do you know who I am？” “No， surely I don’t.” “Do you know who I am？” The student asked again. “No， and I don’t care，” said the professor angrily. “Good，” answered the student， who quickly lifted the stack of exam papers， put his paper in the middle， and rushed out of the room.

（二）You Are Wasting the Country’s Money. 你們在浪費國家的錢。 A young man stopped at a rural gas station. After filling his tank， he bought a soft drink in a shop next to the gas station. He stood by his car to drink his cola and watched two men working along the roadside.

One worker dug a hole—two or three feet deep and then moved on. The other worker came along behind and filled in the hole. While one was digging a new hole， the other was about 25 feet behind filling in the old hole.

“Hold it， hold it，” the young man said to one of the workers. “Can you tell me what’s going on here with this digging？” “Well， we work for the country government，” one of the workers said. “But one of you is digging a hole and the other is filling it up. You’re not accomplishing anything. Aren’t you wasting the country’s money？”

“You don’t understand， mister，” one of the workers said， leaning （斜靠） on his shovel （鏟子）. “Normally， there are three of us， me， Joe， and Mike. I dig the hole， Joe sticks in the tree and Mike puts the dirt back.” “Yeah，” Mike said. “Now Joe is sick but that doesn’t mean we can’t work， does it？”

這就是你想要的。 Alexander Dumas （亞歷山大·大仲馬）， the famous French writer， once went to a restaurant in Germany. He wanted to have a taste of the well-known German mushroom， but the waiter did not understand French. Dumas soon had an idea. He drew a mushroom on a paper and handed the paper to the waiter. The waiter nodded at the drawing and went away.

Dumas was quite pleased with himself. He thought， “Although my drawing is not so good as my writing， yet it makes itself understood.”

Fifteen minutes later， the waiter ran back with an umbrella in his hand. “Here is what you want， sir，” said the waiter. “It is the best one you can find here.”
