第二部分 閱讀理解(共10小題;每小題2分,滿分20分)

A

Last year I went off on a part—business part—pleasure trip to Japan. One of the highlights of my ten—day adventure was when I met up with Bill, the one of my schoolmates who has been working as a web designer in Osaka for almost twenty years. The laowai from Massachusetts met up with the gaijin (Chinese and Japanese words for “foreigner” respectively) from New Hampshire on the streets of Umeda, a commercial business district in Osaka, Japan. We started by going out for a delicious lunch of okonomiyaki.

The real treat came after lunch when Bill took me to the biggest mobile phone market I have ever stepped foot into in my entire life.

What really blew me away was not the size of the market itself, but the rich arrangement of features that even the most basic of cellphone had to offer. Bar—code readers that people could make payments with their mobile phones, opt—in location—based marketing, and streaming HD television (on the higher—end handsets), just to name a few. The most obvious feature is the widespread usage of the phones to access high—quality mobile Internet. It is used so much that for many people it is their primary channel for Internet access and they do not even have a PC at home.

I returned from Japan with one question: When will Chinese netizens make the transition(過渡)from PC to mobile for many of their Internet needs?

Of course a basic condition is the technology should be available both in terms of quality and pricing for average consumers. However, what is equally important is Chinese consumers have to be able to use the new technology for their everyday life. With over 550 million mobile users and 290 million Internet users, it looks as though Chinese consumers will follow Asian mobile leaders — Korea and Japan. Luyi Chen, a contributor of the China Web2.0 Review feels that “no one can truly connect cellphone with the Web in China other than the carriers”.

Luyi Chen describes China Mobile’s social network 139.com and provides a brief introduction to China Unicom’s similar service at u—powerbook.com. 139.com is different from other Chinese social networks like Kaixin001 or Xiaonei, because its focus is on linking the Web to the mobile phone. One of the main features enables users to keep a record of their short messages. With billions of short messages sent every day in China (according to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology), it is a practical tool for this primary form of inter—personal communication. For more on SMS see these two previous posts here and there.

Last night I was walking home next to the river Thames, when something strange happened to me. It was late at night and I’d just had a few bottles of beer in my local pub, so I decided to stop by the riverside and look at the moon for a while. I sat on some steps very close to the water’s edge and looked up at the big yellow moon. I felt very tired so I closed my eyes and after a few minutes, I fell asleep.

When I woke up, the moon had moved behind a cloud and it was very dark and cold. The wind was blowing and an owl hooted(貓頭鷹鳴叫)in a tree above me. I rubbed my eyes and started to get up, when suddenly I heard a splash. I looked down at the water and saw something. It was a long green arm and it was reaching out for my leg. I was so frightened that I couldn’t move. The cold green hand was moving closer and closer when suddenly there was a blue flash and a strange noise from behind me. Someone jumped onto the stairs next to me. He was wearing strange clothes and he had a crazy look in his eyes. He shouted “Get back!”. There was a bright flash and the monster hissed(發出嘶嘶聲)and disappeared. I looked up at the man. Dutch Girl, 14, Sets Off on a Global Sailing Trip

Laura Dekker, a 14—year—old girl in Netherlands, who’s determined to become the youngest girl ever to sail around the world on her own, set off on Wednesday saying the forbidding voyage did not frighten her.

Laura Dekker left the small Dutch harbor town of Den Osse this morning for Portugal, where her effort will officially get under way.

She got on the yacht(游艇)Guppy with her father, Dick, who said he went along on the ride just to make sure every—thing was in working order before Laura arrives in Lisbon and heads for the open sea alone.

“I am not really afraid,”she told the journalists and supporters who came to the dock to see her off.

She’s already won one battle, after a court order freed her from the guardianship(監護)of child protection services last week and her mother agreed to her voyage. To win the court’s support, Laura took a training, finished another year of school and took a course in first aid.

“I can be sailing now, and that’s great!”she told reporters.

The voyage drew extra concern after 16—year—old Abby Sunderland of California had to be saved in the Indian Ocean last month after the mast of her yacht broke suddenly as she attempted a solo trip around the world.

If Laura wants to beat the record, she will has to return to Lisbon by Sept. 16, 2013, and in a way time is on her side.

In May, 16—year—old Australian Jessica Watson became the youngest person to sail nonstop around the world without any help, a journey she completed in 210 days.

But Laura’s trip won’t follow the same pattern. She plans to stop at ports along the way, and might even return home to catch up with her studies before getting back on deck.

She said she wasn’t afraid of pirates(海盜)that have been causing trouble to the Gulf of Aden and would miss her dog, Spot.

第三部分 寫作(共四節, 滿分55分)

第一節 閱讀表達(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart(購物手推車). They will, in a lifetime, push the chrome—plated contraptions many miles. But few will know—or even think to ask—who it was that invented them.

Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging(吃力地攜帶)groceries around in baskets they had to carry.

One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.

On June 4, 1937, Goldman’s first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn’t wait to see them using his invention.

But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try.

After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren’t using his carts. “Don’t you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?” one shopper replied.

But Goldman wasn’t beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony(假冒的)customers.

As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come—those who came bought more. With larger, easier—to—handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.

Today’s shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman’s original model. Perhaps that’s one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937—before the coming of the shopping cart.
