“實習女王”的成功秘籍

27歲的勞倫·伯杰在實習領域可謂專家,她經營著一個專為大學生尋找實習工作的網站Internqueen.com,不久前更是出書傳授自己的經驗秘籍,為無數彷徨中的大學生提供參考建議。

Lauren Berger started out as a clueless college freshman at University of Central Florida, whose only work experience was waitressing at a seafood restaurant. But the 27-year-old woman has become an authority on landing internships.

She had completed 15 internships by the time she graduated from college in 2006 and started a business helping students find internships in 2008.

In her recently published book All Work, No Pay, the “Intern Queen” shares her hard-earned knowledge and insider advice on how to become an intern and get the most out of every internship opportunity.

勞倫·伯杰初入職場時,還是中佛羅里達大學一名名不見經傳的大一新生。當時她唯一的工作經驗就是在一家海鮮餐廳當過服務員。而如今27歲的她已經成為實習領域的專家。

截止到2006年大學畢業時,伯杰在大學期間曾拿下15份實習工作,并于2008年開始經營專為大學生尋找實習工作的公司。

最近,這位“實習女王”還出版了名為《不求薪水,只求工作》的新書,分享自己辛苦積累的工作經驗和求職妙招,教你如何拿下實習崗位以及如何最大程度地利用每次實習機會。

1. Cold calling can work.

學會打陌生電話。

It all started in the spring of Berger’s freshman year when her pushy mother called and insisted she get an internship.

Berger headed to Florida State’s career office where she was told that they had nothing for her. “They said, ‘There is one company in town called the Zimmerman Agency, but they only accept seniors,’” she recalled in her book.

She went back to her dorm and researched the Zimmerman Agency. After taking some time to study the company’s website, she picked up the phone to cold-phone, “Hello, this is Lauren Berger calling. May I speak with your internship coordinator?”

She got through, and the woman told her to send in a resume and cover letter.

伯杰的實習之路始于大一的春季學期,當時一向對她嚴格要求的母親打電話,堅持讓她要找一份實習工作。

于是她跑到佛羅里達州就業辦公室,卻被告知沒有任何工作可以提供給她。她在書中回憶道:“他們說:‘確實有一家芝瑪曼公司在招人,但是他們只接受高年級的學生。’”

伯杰回到寢室,開始對該公司進行調研。在花時間從公司網站上了解了一些情況后,她打通了陌生電話:“ 您好,我是勞倫·伯杰,可以找一下實習項目協調人嗎?”

電話通了,那位女士告訴伯杰將簡歷和求職信發給她。

2. Take immediate action when you get a lead.

抓住機會,立馬行動。

Berger e-mailed her materials to the company’s internship coordinator that evening. She wanted the coordinator to know that this internship was a priority and didn’t want the woman to forget their phone conversation.

The next morning, her phone rang at 8 am. The coordinator was so impressed by Berger’s promptness, so she offered her an interview. “She said, ‘you don’t know how long students take to send in their materials,’” recalled Berger in an interview with Forbes.

伯杰當晚就把求職材料發給了該公司的實習項目協調人。她希望對方知道這份實習工作對自己而言很重要,也希望對方沒有忘記她們之間的那通電話。

第二天早上8點,伯杰的電話響了。她的辦事效率給實習項目協調人留下深刻印象,于是得到了一次面試機會。伯杰在《福布斯》雜志的采訪中曾回憶道:“她說:‘每次讓學生發求職材料,都不知道要等多久。’”

3. Make yourself available.

有求必應。

The internship coordinator from Zimmerman wanted to know if Berger was available to come into the office the following day. She made herself available on the day and at the time the coordinator requested. “At the beginning of your career, it’s important to do everything you can to make yourself available,” writes Berger in the book.

芝瑪曼公關公司的實習項目協調人詢問伯杰第二天能否去辦公室幫忙,她爽快地答應了并按照協調人的要求準時到達。伯杰在書中寫道:“在你初入職場時,盡量答應每一件力所能及的事,這一點十分重要。”

4. Prepare for the interview.

面試要打有準備的仗。

Before each interview, Berger would do further researches about the company, including the firm’s mission statement and executive biographies.

“Look for things you have in common with the people who run the company,” she advises. Berger recommends incorporating buzzwords from the mission statement into your interview.

在每一次面試前,伯杰都會詳細了解招聘公司的情況,包括公司宗旨,高管簡介等信息。

她建議求職者:“尋找自己與該公司經營者之間的共同點。”她還建議在面試中可以把公司宗旨中比較關鍵性的話語包括在自己的發言中。

5. Say you’re ready to start immediately.

告訴對方你可以隨時上崗。

Sometimes, employers tell applicants they can take time to think about whether they want the job. Berger says you should break in and say, “I know I want this.” Berger’s eagerness and persistence came through and she got the Zimmerman internship in the first place.

有時,雇主通常都會讓求職者考慮一段時間再做決定是否接受這份工作。伯杰的建議是,這時候你需要打斷對方,直接表明:“我很清楚自己想要這份工作。”當初正是這份熱忱與執著為她贏得了芝瑪曼公司的實習機會。

6. Work hard and send handwritten thank-you notes after your internship concludes.

努力做好每一份工作,實習結束后給雇主發手寫感謝信。

After each internship concluded, Berger wrote to her employers by hand, thanking them for the opportunities. She kept copious notes of all her colleagues and superiors, and sent snail mail notes to each one, three times a year. Since she started as an intern back in 2002, Berger has built a network of thousands of contacts.

伯杰在每次實習期結束后,都會給雇主發去手寫的感謝信,感謝他們為自己提供的這次機會。她收藏著與從前的同事、上司大量的往來信件,并通過郵局給每一個人都寄去傳統的信件,一年三次。從2002年參加實習到現在,伯杰已經建立網羅數千人的龐大人脈。
