It’s a serious question and one you’re likely not asked all that often.

Take a look at what you do each day and ask yourself “why am I doing this?”

On a typical day I’m up with my kids，playing with them，tending to them，teaching them. Why do I do it? Because I love them，I want them to have our values，I want to teach them and I want to experience what it’s like to be a mom. I could choose to go back to a job outside of the home and earn a fairly good income，but I choose to stay home because it just feels like the right thing to do. These are just a few examples of what I do and why I do them. They may not sit well with everyone but I do what I do in these respects with purpose and reason.

I could also mention that I watch TV from time to time. If you asked me why I do it，I wouldn’t have a very good answer——to curb boredom，to relax and just sit at the end of the day. There are a lot of better things I could be doing with my time but occasionally TV is okay.

I think doing things without purpose，a plan or the bigger picture in mind can be fun but it may be wasting your time，effort，energy，talents and skills.

So what are you doing and why are you doing it?

Take inventory of what you’re doing in major life areas and try to understand why you’re doing them. If you spend too much of your time focusing on things that don’t really matter，that don’t really excite you and you don’t have a reason for doing what you’re doing you could be missing out on a lot of great things.

Think of all the opportunities you could be missing out on if you’re tied up in activities that don’t matter to you. Wouldn’t you hate to realize one day that what you wanted all along passed you by because you were too busy doing other things，menial things.

Apple introduced iBooks textbooks a couple of weeks ago when it announced its iBooks 2 platform. Apple developed its iPad-based textbooks in conjunction with major textbook publishers. The company offers a collection of textbooks for high school students.

Apple claims it offers a “new textbook experience” and suggests its interactive iBooks textbooks are “the next chapter in learning”.

It sounds like good news for pupils and students. Think of it. No more carrying heavy backpacks full of textbooks. Every textbook you require can be stored on your iPad.

No more having to buy expensive textbooks which you will only use for a year or two and then sell or give away.

Of course there’s a catch. You need to own an iPad and as you know，it is not cheap. You also need to buy digital textbooks，mostly priced each at $14.99 (94.74 yuan) or less.

Textbook publishing was worth $8.7 billion in the US alone last year. Will digital books take over completely in education? You can appreciate the attractions.

Instead of boring old textbooks which are quickly out of date you can have an interactive learning experience.

You can play videos，examine geometrical problems in 3D，listen to music and commentary，make notes and mark passages electronically. You can also share stuff on social networking sites with fellow students.

The book is dead; long live the tablet computer.

But wait a minute. Not so fast. Let’s consider the evolution of learning. Thousands of years before books，man was depicting hunting scenes on the walls of caves.

China developed printing，using signs cut into wooden blocks. Books were printed rather than written out by hand. In 1273 a handbook for Chinese farmers and growers of raw silk was printed. Soon 3，000 copies were in circulation，at a time. But the great leap forward in learning came thanks to the printing press. Johannes Gutenberg of Mainz in Germany was perhaps the first European to print a book using not only a printing press but also metallic type. His techniques were copied and adapted. Thanks to the printing press，cheap books were possible.

And the rest，as they say，is history. Will Apple revolutionize learning? That remains to be seen.

It’s easy to be a bit jealous of Sean Anderson’s adventures —— even if he is a fictional character in a movie.

We first saw Anderson explore the depths of our planet in the 2008 hit movie Journey to the Center of the Earth. The 17-year-old returned in Journey 2: The

Mysterious Island on February 10. The film is based on French writer Jules Verne’s fantasy novel，The Mysterious Island，but it also uses elements from Treasure Island，Gulliver’s Travels and 20，000 Leagues Under the Sea.

It begins when Sean receives a distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist. Sean’s stepfather，Hank，is unable to stop his stepson from setting out on a voyage to discover the island，and so joins him instead. Together with Gabato，the only helicopter pilot willing to risk the trip，and Gabato’s beautiful，strong-willed daughter Kailani，they set out to find the island，rescue its lone human inhabitant and escape before a huge earthquake forces the island underwater and buries its treasures forever.

The movie was filmed on the Hawaiian island of Oahu，also the location of the hit TV drama Lost. The island’s jungles and beautiful mountains grow up out of the screen thanks to the movie’s 3D technology.

The island setting is key to many works about mystery and adventure，such as Utopia，Robinson Crusoe，Lord of the Flies，and Shakespeare’s play about a magical island，The Tempest. Guardian writer David Cox believes that islands enjoy a special place in the human imagination. Unlike deserts or forests，islands have boundaries.“This makes them theaters in which alternative worlds，paradises or hells，can readily take the stage，” Cox writes. According to Cox，islands may seem different，but “they have the same obvious but distinct features of isolation”.

Last week， I had an interview with the volunteers from the student council in our school， concerning the issue of using the second-hand textbooks reasonably. According to the volunteers， they gave those books to newcomers as gifts at the very beginning of a new term. They also pointed out that they did it not only because they wanted to save the resources and help the poor students but also because they wanted to inspire students who used the book to work harder. At last， they mentioned that， due to their volunteer work， more and more students would willingly hand over their used textbooks to any student in need. Besides， it can strengthen the spirit of helping each other.

Two brothers had a bad relationship. Once， the elder brother had a carpenter build a fence between their houses. Instead of doing that， the carpenter built a bridge that connected the two houses， which brought the two brothers close.

After reading the passage， I’m moved by what the carpenter has done. Of course， when I have conflicts with others or if I am hurt by others， I will choose to forgive them instead of quarrelling or fighting with them. Only forgiveness can bring us close and help us live a harmonious life together.

It reminds me of my similar experience. Once， one of my best friends did something that hurt me badly. At first， I wanted to hurt him too， but later I realized it was wrong to do that. So I responded to him with love and kindness. After that， he was moved by what I had done and we were still good friends.

Forgiveness is of great importance in our life. It’s good for our harmonious relationship with others. Only by letting go of past hurt or conflicts can we have a good mood every day and live a healthy life.
