It is difficult to describe him with just a few brief sentences, for his is such a talented person with incredible experiences.]
The well-known author of “Tracks in the Snowy Forest”, Qu Bo is Qu Leilei’s father. Qu Leilei’s 88-year-old mother lives in Beijing; his beloved wife and daughter live in London. Qu Leilei had been an “educated youth” and barefoot doctor sent to the countryside, and a worker before joining CCTV as a graphic designer. He was passionate about painting when he was young, praised and coached by masters such as Hua Junwu, Huang Zhou and Jiang Zhaohe. Half a century ago, he was at the Beijing Shichahai Junior Sports School, along with Li Lianjie and Chen Kaige. He was twice the Beijing Junior Champion for Breaststroke.
Qu Leilei was one of the founders of “Star Painting Society”. The 20-plus “star” artists have all moved to other countries around 1984. Qu himself moved to England in 1985.
In March 2011, the National Art Museum of China exhibited Qu’s “Brush Ink Light Shadow” series. Over the last 20 years, Mr. Qu’s works of different periods and themes have been exhibited in London, Paris, Venice, Tokyo, New York, Geneva and Shanghai. The Victoria and Albert Museum, Ashmolean Museum, the National Art Museum of China, the Barclays Bank, UBS and other organizations all collect his works.
Michael Sullivan, the most authoritative critic, has been studying Chinese art for more than half a century. He made such a comment about Qu Leilei, “He has shown that the Chinese art of brush and ink, while traditionally seen as the art of lines, is actually quite capable of expressing the most subtle changes in light and shadow, and creating a kind of realism that is the soul of art, dear to the heart of Mr. Qu.”
Liang Jiang, the vice director of the National Museum of Art and famous theorist said that Leilei’s works were a bit like his mix-blood daughter. They are not convergence or combination, but seamless blend of the west and the east, a brand new form of art.
