If there’s one disadvantage to living in a world of modern conveniences—a world in which every road is paved and every danger comes with its own emergency number—it’s that adventure has become harder and harder to find. While most of us are grateful we no longer have to wrestle our dinners into submission or risk death for a peek at foreign lands， there’s a certain loss that accompanies modern estrangement from the natural world.

But just because adventure has become increasingly removed from everyday experience doesn’t mean it’s disappeared. While the last few decades have seen more and more Chinese prioritizing practical considerations over， say， quitting their jobs to climb mountains， a handful of visionaries are still willing to do whatever it takes to find adventure. In this piece we follow five adventure addicts who’ve dedicated their lives to wholly impractical endeavors， ranging from off-road driving to decade-long wanderings， in search of the thrills and fulfillment that reside in the unknown.
