Reporter: On October 29th, 2010, Jeremy Lin became the first Chinese-American to play in a regular season NBA game. The second son of Taiwanese immigrants Ji Ming and Shirley Lin, Jeremy learned how to play basketball from his father, who was a big NBA fan. But not everyone in the family thought it was something he should pursue.

Jeremy: No one else really played basketball besides my family, and so it was kinda taboo for a little bit, and, you know, with my grand…grandma, you know, she was kinda…always trying to influence me to not play, and…and then, you know, once we realized, you know, this…this is something I love doing and…and…and, you know, I can…you know, I’m having fun doing it, and I can go play at the next level, then, you know then peop…more people started to support it.

Reporter: He continued to improve and in 2006 led Palo Alto High to a 32-1 record and an upset of nationally-ranked Mater Dei in the Division Two State Championship Game. Despite being named“Player of the Year” by virtually

every California publication,

he did not receive a single

scholarship offer.

Jeremy: I think a lot of it was

me being underdeveloped

physically. At that time I was,

you know, a hundred seventy

pounds, and, you know, I

was just very raw, and then,

you know, me being Asian

American; I don’t know how

much that had to do with it,

but I’m sure it had something

to do with it.

Reporter: While Harvard

does not provide athletic

scholarships, Jeremy was offered a chance to play there and accepted. He excelled on the 1)court despite having to put up with 2)racist 3)taunts, like being told to “Go back to China” and being called a “4)Chink”.

Jeremy: You know that was just something that got under my skin in the very beginning. It was really frustrating, but I just had to learn how to deal with it as time went by and for me to be able to be more mentally strong and not, you know, get distracted or angered so easily.

Reporter: Jeremy was twice named “First Team [1]All-Ivy League”. As the team’s leading 5)scorer during his senior season, he led Harvard to its best record ever. Still, he wasn’t taken in the 2010 NBA 6)Draft. Dallas did sign Jeremy to its Summer League team, and he made the most of his opportunity when he 7)outplayed the overall number one pick, John Wall. His performance against Wall got him contract offers from the Mavericks and Lakers, but he chose to sign with his home-town team, the Golden State Warriors. So far, the racist remarks he heard in college have not followed him to the NBA. Jeremy: That’s what I was really shocked about is I don’t think I heard one Asian taunt from an opposing fan or player all year actually, so I think a lot of other players in the NBA actually went out of their way to say “congratulations” and different things like that, and so…I think the NBA, you know, is kinda like a…a big family. I think all the guys are friends with each other, and, for the most part, and

people respect what other people

are doing, and so, that was really

inspiring and really, you know, a

nice change of pace for me.

Reporter: Jeremy’s faith was

tested when he was sent down

to the Warrior’s developmental

league team in Reno.

Jeremy: Being there was

another blessing in disguise, you

know. I remember when I first got

sent down, I felt like, you know,

the world had ended. I was, like,

“No, don’t do that. Don’t send me

down there”, and …. But, looking

back it was absolutely necessary.

Reporter: Playing with a renewed confidence, Jeremy finished the season strong with the Warriors. At 6-3, 200 pounds, he has the size to play point guard in the NBA. In just one season Jeremy has been able to break some old stereotypes about Asian-Americans being unable to play sports at the professional level. But he knows there will always be doubters.

Jeremy: You know, that’s a stereotype that I’m gonna have to fight for the rest of my life.

Linsanity to Grace the Cover of Time Magazine

From IBTimes

(Feb. 16, 2012) Jeremy Lin Linsanity will grace[榮耀] the cover of Time magazine next week in yet another major ego boost for the breakout New York Knicks star.

The Knicks’ new point guard, who has only started in six games so far, has already earned praise from President Barack Obama, become the hottest sports star on earth, and inspired the entire Asian-American community.

And now Time magazine is running a cover story on Jeremy Lin, the Taiwanese-American basketball sensation[引起轟動(dòng)的人]. The cover of the Feb. 27 edition of Time, which was released Thursday, will bear a photo of him going for an underhand lay-up, overlaid with the word “LINSANITY!” in all caps, with a subheadline reading “Jeremy Lin lights up the NBA.”

It also includes a note that says “Since 1976 no one has scored more points in his first four starts than Jeremy Lin. That’s more than Jordan. More than Lebron.”

The article, titled “Linsanity!” and written by Sean Gregory, will be accompanied by a lengthy article about Jeremy Lin and Linsanity. A preview of the story’s text is currently posted at Time.com, reading as follows:

“To measure the immediate sociological impact of Jeremy Lin—the electric New York Knicks point guard who has jolted the NBA—start on the weekend-warrior basketball floor. In a gym near New York City’s Chinatown two days after Lin torched the Los Angeles Lakers for 38 points and a day after the Knicks won their fifth consecutive game with Lin running the show, a group of African-American players prepped for a rec-league game. Most of the competition was Asian American. The message: Ditch the stereotypes of the Asian dudes as pesky players who nevertheless won’t be hard to beat.”
