he CPAFFC and the Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania co-hosted a reception in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations at the Diaoyutai State Guest House on October 23. Vice President Li Yuanchao and visiting Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete joined over 500 people of various circles at the reception that was also addressed by CPAFFC President Li Xiaolin and Tanzanian Ambassador to China Abdulrahman Shimbo.
Vice President Li Yuanchao said that over the past half a century, the two peoples had supported each other and become good all-weather friends.
“China hopes to work closely with Tanzania to implement the important consensus reached by State leaders, to enhance substantial cooperation in all areas and boost greater progress in developing a comprehensive partnership based on mutual benefit and win-win cooperation,” Li said.
President Kikwete said that the traditional friendship between Tanzania and China had been forged and cultivated by the older generation of State leaders. Hailing the long-lasting friendship, the president hoped to further expand cooperation in all areas.
Kikwete specially mentioned Salim Ahmed Salim, a member of his entourage and called him envoy of friendship.
Salim became Tanzanian Ambassador to China in 1969. He served as permanent representative to the United Nations from 1970 to 1980. At the end of 1971, China’s legitimate seat in the United Nations was restored at the 26th UN General Assembly, for which Salim had made an important contribution and won the respect of the Chinese people.
Returning from the UN, Salim became Prime Minister of Tanzania in 1984 and was elected Secretary General of the Organization of African Union in 1989, serving three consecutive terms.
The sight of reception attendees walking up to this veteran diplomat of over 70 to hug and have pictures taken with him was most touching.
