On September 14, 1987, An email entitled "Cross the Great Wall, go to the world" was sent to Germany from the “Chinese Academic Network” which was located in Beijing Computer Applied Technology Institute.

1995 to 1997

Before 1995, only scientific research institutions and laboratories could join in the internet in China. By 1995, the China Telecom in Shanghai began to provide internet connection service for the society, this was the start of the commercial internet in China. This opened up the desired black box of the internet for the population, and provided an effective way for them to join in the internet.

At that time, there were only more than 30 thousand netizens overall the country. Most people even didnt know what internet was. Even the customers who joined in the internet could not get lot of information from the internet, since the internet speed was too low, and the charge was high.

This advertising slogan at Baishi Bridge in Beijing (near to Zhongguancun) became a witness of the development history of internet in China.

In February, 1997, the nationwide internet IHW was opened up, which became the earliest and largest privately operated ISP ( Internet Service Provider) and ICP ( Internet Content Provider). In the same year, the privately operated internet corporations such as Netease, Sitonglifang Forum( the predecessor of Sina), Chinabyte, Sohu began to rise up.

This stage was the first developmental upsurge of internet. Many corporations who are still active in the frontstage sprung up, such as Tencent, Sina, Baidu, Alibaba, Ebay, Elong, etc. They were all set up in this stage.

By 2000, the internet corps in China uncovered the prologue of racing to log in the NASDAQ. Sina, Netease, Sohu and many other internet corps came to be listed. However, by the end of 2000, the NASDAQ dropped below 2600, the “China Concept Stock” listed in the NASDAQ went all the way down, and the Chinese internet enterprises suffered widespread heavy blow.
