第三部分 閱讀理解(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

Robert Spring, a 19th century forger(偽造簽字者), was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he make some money by selling his small but genuine(真正的)early U.S. autographs. Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ban Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To make less the chance of detection(發(fā)覺), he sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale.

Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger cant approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who dont have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals.

In Springs time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states, so Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General “Stonewall” Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny was too poor to sell a great number of letters and papers belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand(需求). All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating this forgeries from the originals.

51. What did Robert Spring do for a living in the past 15 years?

A. Running a bookstore. B. Imitating and selling signatures.

C. Copying books of famous writers. D. Selling signatures of great Americans.

52. Why did Spring sell his autographs in England and Canada?

A. Britain was Springs birthplace. B. There was less chance of being detected there.

C. The price was higher in England and Canada. D. There was a greater demand there than in America.

53. What were in a great demand in Britain after the Civil War?

A. Money. B. Civil War battle plans.

C. Southern papers and letters. D. Signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin.

54. Whom did Spring usually do business with?

55. Who was Miss Fanny Jackson?
