第一節(jié) 閱讀表達(dá)

閱讀下面短文,并用英語回答問題,請注意問題后的詞數(shù)要求。

Many people often complain that they can’t find true love. However, Andrew’s story tells us true love is unconditional.

While Andrew was getting ready for work one Friday morning, he announced to his wife that he had finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous. What if Mr Larchmont refused to grant his request? Andrew had worked so hard in the last 18 months. Absolutely, he deserved a wage increase.

The thought of walking into Larchmont’s office left Andrew weak at the knees. Late in the afternoon he finally gathered the courage to approach his superior. To his delight and surprise, the close-fisted Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a raise!

When he arrived home that evening, Andrew found their dining table set with their best china, and candles lit. His wife, Tina, had prepared a delicate meal including his favorite dishes. Immediately he figured someone from the office had tipped her off!

Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered note. It was from his wife, which read: “Congratulations, my love! I knew you’d get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you. I’m so proud of your accomplishments!” He read it and stopped to reflect on how sensitive and caring Tina was.

After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen when he observed a second card had slipped out of Tina’s pocket. He picked it up. It read: “Don’t worry about not getting the raise! You do deserve one! I prepared this dinner to show you just how much I love you even though you didn’t get the increase.”

Tears welled up in Andrew’s eyes. Total acceptance! Tina’s love was not conditional upon his success at work. The fear of rejection is often softened and we can undergo almost any setback or rejection when we know someone loves us regardless of our success or failure.

2. Why did Andrew feel surprised when Harvey Larchmont agreed to his request? (no more than 5 words)

第一節(jié) 閱讀表達(dá)

閱讀下面短文,并用英語回答問題,請注意問題后的詞數(shù)要求。

Wang Ying is among the 313 college graduates employed by Changxing County of Zhejiang Province. She is now a village official in Gangkou Village. Recently, she was awarded the Agricultural Pacemaker’s Prize of Zhejiang Province because she took villagers to a new level in modern agricultural development.

However, she had a tough time when she first came here. Wang Ying says, “Our village was mainly based on traditional farming. Villagers had little knowledge about modern agriculture. Almost no one wanted to contract (訂合同) the farming land when the new land system was first adopted in 2012—I thought it was my responsibility to change the situation.”

That was not an easy job. Most villagers did not trust her at the beginning because she was a college graduate with no experience in agriculture. She came up with the idea that village officials took the lead to contract part of the farming land. And Wang Ying borrowed 20,000 yuan from her parents to take part in the investment (投資).

Her plan worked. Villagers soon contracted the remaining farming land to follow their village officials. They began to set up a vegetable production base and have earned a total of more than 2 million yuan after a year’s hard work.

As a result of it, she has won the approval and trust from the villagers. One of the local officials, Sun Genfa, says, “Villagers of Gangkou Village knew nothing about modern agriculture until Wang Ying came here. Without her help, we would not have made such achievements.”

When asked about plans for the future, Wang Ying says, “I will stay here. I have the confidence to make life better for the villagers.” Many college graduate village officials, like Wang Ying, are contributing greatly to the development of China’s rural areas. Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.

Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nice other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sévigné in Paris.

Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognized in the form of a Military Medal by the French government.

In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.

Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity (輻射能). Irene Joliot Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956.

After the breakfast, I began reading English and did some exercises in Maths. I worked quite hardly and made good progresses. I spent nearly the whole afternoon outside. I went swim in the river and didn’t come back until it was about five and six. Sometimes a friend of mine would come to see me and we would spend some hours listened to music. 第一節(jié) 閱讀表達(dá)

閱讀下面短文,并用英語回答問題,請注意問題后的詞數(shù)要求。

Sam, a dog, was left behind in Colorado while his owners, Mr and Mrs Green moved to Southern California. They did not give the dog up. They found him a very nice home before they moved. They would have let Sam accompany them, but they were afraid the dog’s presence would make it difficult for them to rent a house when they reached their destination.

The Green family lived in Colorado for less than a year. Before that, they had lived in the same neighborhood in California to which they returned. So Sam had been there before, but only for a short time when he was young.

Several months after the Greens left Colorado, after they were comfortably settled back in California, they heard a scratch at the door. They couldn’t imagine who might be there. It never occurred to them that it might be Sam, because they were sure he was happily set up with his new family back in Colorado. When they opened the door, the Greens saw a dirty, tired dog with very hurting feet. The animal looked a little bit like Sam, but no one could believe that Sam could have walked 840 miles on his own. The tired dog spent the night under the family car. The next day, when he was more rested, he performed some of his old tricks. The Greens knew they had their own dog back.

閱讀下面短文,并用英語回答問題,請注意問題后的詞數(shù)要求。

When asked to speak at the Community Book Club Luncheon, I considered sharing some anecdotes (趣聞) from the life of a man, who enjoyed reading.

In spite of the fact that Thomas Alva Edison had almost no formal education, spending only three months in school, his mother taught him to read at quite an early age. As a young man, Mr Edison decided to read all of the books in the Detroit public library, systematically shelf by shelf. After finishing the first fifteen feet, he decided to reconsider the task.

A few years later, in Cincinnati, his love for reading almost cost him his life. Having stayed at the library until very late, Mr Edison started home with a pile of old magazines for which he had paid the large sum of two dollars. Suspecting that he might be a thief, a policeman ordered him to stop. But Mr Edison was too deaf to hear the order. The policeman shot, and missed.

In addition to the electric light, Thomas Edison is known for inventing the photograph, microphone, mimeograph (油印機(jī)), electric storage battery, and photographic film. Whenever he was paid for an invention, he used the money for his two loves—more experiments and more books.

A friend described Edison’s life in those busy days. “I went to visit Tom,” he said. “And I found him sitting behind a pile of books five feet high which he had ordered from New York, London, and Paris. He studied them night and day, eating at his desk and sleeping in his chair. In six weeks he had read all of the books and had performed more than two thousand experiments by using the formulas (公式) that he had studied.”

第一節(jié) 閱讀表達(dá)

閱讀下面短文,并用英語回答問題,請注意問題后的詞數(shù)要求。

A 14-year-old girl was attacked by a grey bear while competing in a bike race. She managed to whisper the word “bear” to her rescuer. The girl had serious head, neck and leg wounds. Now she is in dangerous condition in hospital.

The girl was taking part in a 24-hour race through Bicentennial Park in Alaska when she was attacked by the bear. Bicentennial Park is next to Chugach State Park where some wild animals live.

The animal attacked the girl in a heavily wooded area at about 1:30 am. The girl called emergency services but she was unable to say any word. Another rider Peter Basinger found her lying unconscious on the ground. He told Anchorage Daily News that she managed to say the word “bear” when he stopped to help. Her helmet had been knocked off in the attack and rolled into the woods. Mr Basinger waited with the girl for about 20 minutes until doctors arrived. Armed police travelled 3km with doctors to pick up the girl. Animal expert Rick Sinnot said something must be done as soon as possible to prevent the bear from attacking people again. “It was extremely terrifying,” he said.

Mr Sinnot told Anchorage Daily News that the bear might be a mother. It hurt two runners on a nearby path two weeks ago. He also said that the girl was lucky to have been wearing a bike helmet because the bear had bitten her head several times.

I am an university student. I once thought life at the university must be excellent, but now I changed my mind. I have three roommates, and I was the last one to move into the dormitories. Last term, I got along peacefully and happily. And I find they are not willing to be with me now. They don’t talk about me, and they’ve become even cold toward me. Many times, I wanted to talk to them about how I felt like, but I failed to find an opening. When leaving alone, I always recall this sadness. I am an honestly student. Why can’t I win true friendship?

第一節(jié) 閱讀表達(dá)

閱讀下面短文,并用英語回答問題,請注意問題后的詞數(shù)要求。

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer (自動換幣器) fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.

Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note—“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”—and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.

All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery. Mr Basille always said, “Delivering milk is hard if you want to do it well but I love my job.”

There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.

Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (門廊). Often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

2. How could the author’s mother change their order? (no more than 10 words)

第一節(jié) 閱讀表達(dá)

閱讀下面短文,并用英語回答問題,請注意問題后的詞數(shù)要求。

Medical research is leading American education officials to consider having high school classes start later in the morning. The research says that teenagers are more awake later at night than adults are. When staying up late at night, the teenagers have problems learning early in the morning.

Researchers in the state of Rhode Island measured the amount of the hormone (荷爾蒙) melatonin (降黑素) in people’s mouths at different times of the day. Melatonin causes people to feel sleepy.

They found that melatonin levels rise later at night in teenagers than they do in children and adults. It remains at higher levels in teenagers later in the morning. They said this shows that teenagers have difficulty learning early in the morning. Yet most school systems in the United States begin high school classes at about seven o’clock.

A few school districts have made some changes. In 1996, school officials in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start of classes from seven thirty to eight thirty. Two years later, the nearby city of Minneapolis did the same. Teachers there reported that students were no longer sleepy in class and were happier.

Health experts say that teenagers need between eight and nine hours of sleep a night. Students not getting enough sleep are likely to be late for school, fail to do their homework, fall asleep in class and have trouble taking part in class discussions.

Some people, however, don’t support a later start time because they say that it would limit the time for practicing sports after school. However, the Minnesota schools found that this did not hurt school sports competitions.

More American school districts are discussing the possibility of changing high school start times. Researchers and teenagers say that they cannot make the change quickly enough.

1. What will happen if teenagers stay up late according to Paragraph 1? (no more than 8 words)

2. When does melatonin remain at higher levels in teenagers according to Paragraph 3? (no more than 4 words)

I’m very glad to receive your e-mail asking for information about the host family we have arranged for you to stay.

Locating in a beautiful and quiet neighborhood, the house was big enough to enable you to have a room of your own.Apart from the convenient public transportation, our private car will make your visits difficult. Because all the family members can speak fluently English and have outgoing personalities, I’m sure you will have no trouble communicating with them. Above all, they hosted an American student in last year, through that they gained lots of experience. Hope you enjoy your stay here.

Yours,
