論美國50 states中的state的含義和翻譯

摘要：The United States of America（美國）中的state 被譯成“國”。可是，當state脫離the United States of America（“美利堅合眾國”）的時候，state被譯成了“州”,如California State。“州”使得“美利堅合眾國”這個名字不能自圓其說，因為如果將“州”作為the United States of America中的state的譯文，the United States of America的譯文變成了“美利堅合眾州”，“美利堅合眾國”變得不是一個國家了。

一、The United States of America被譯成“美利堅合眾國”，其中的state被譯成“國”

the United States of America分為兩個部分，第一部分為 the United States，第二部分是 of America。

the United States中的United的意思是“聯合的”，與英國的全名、“聯合國”的英語 the United Nations中的United是同樣的意義

“美利堅合眾國(the United States of America)”中的“合(United)”是“聯合的”的縮寫。

States是什么意思?

當 the United States of America作為整體名字的時候，其中的 States被翻譯成“眾國”，“眾”表示States的復數，“國”表示State； United States中的United對應的漢語是“合”(聯合)； United States的譯文是“合眾國”。

從United States 的譯文是“合眾國”判斷，States的意義是“國家”。of America是the United States of America的第二個組成部分，其中的America是什么意思？

如上所述，the United States of America的漢語譯文是“美利堅合眾國”，其中United States是“合眾國”；其中的of America是“美利堅的”，為了順口，“美利堅的”簡寫為“美利堅”。

“美利堅”是一個國家的總稱名字，包括United States（合眾國）。英語 the United States of America中的of是“……的”、“包括”的意思，表示 America（美利堅）包括 the United States（合眾國），表示 the United States（合眾國）是America（美利堅）的。

簡而言之，of America是the United States of America的第二個組成部分，其中的America是“美利堅”。

上述的結論是“the United States of America（美利堅合眾國）”這個名字中的 state翻譯成“國”即“國家”。

二、state脫離“the United States ofAmerica（美利堅合眾國）”被譯成“州”，“國”與“州”詞義不一致

“the United States of America（美利堅合眾國）”中的state的意義是“國家”、“邦國”，可是脫離“美利堅合眾國”被翻譯成“州”，如California State。同一個詞，不同的譯文，意義發生沖突和矛盾。

因此，長期以來，我們見到漢語中的the United States of America中 State的譯文有兩個，一個是“國”，另一個是“州”。

當The United States of America作為整體名字的時候，其中的State的譯文是“國”，如上所述，The United States of America的譯文是“美利堅合眾國”，其中的state被翻譯成“國”。

當 state脫離整體名字 the United States of America的時候，state的譯文是“州”，如“美國有50個州”對應的英語是There are fifty states in The United States of America；漢語中的“州”就是英語state的譯文。

中國所有的詞典都將英語 state翻譯成漢語“州”。 “州”是美國的 50個組成部分的名稱，已經是眾所皆知的常識。

三、英語state的真正含義

1.《牛津現代英漢雙解詞典》用 nation解釋state， 將state視為“國”。

《牛津現代英漢雙解詞典》p2022說：

State…. 3(also 亦作State) an organized political community under one government; a community; a nation: 國家，政權，政府。such a community, forming part of a federal republic, esp. the United States of America （作為聯邦共和國尤指美利堅合眾國一部分的）州，邦)。[1]

上面詞典開始將 state解析為 nation, 英語nation的漢語譯文是“國”、“國家”，因此，state就是“國”、“國家”；接著詞典說” such a community, forming part of a federal republic, esp. the United States of America”這句話的含義是，當state作為一個聯邦共和國的組成部分，特別是美利堅合眾國的組成部分的時候，state是聯邦共和國的邦國。上面詞典用“州”、“邦”兩個字翻譯state，其中的“州”是多余的，一個“邦”字完全足夠；英語 federal republic （“聯邦共和國”）的意思是共和國是幾個邦聯合起來的；幾個邦聯合起來的共和國才能稱之為聯邦共和國，幾個州聯合起來的共和國只能稱之為聯州共和國。世界上只有聯邦共和國，沒有聯州共和國。

2.《朗文當代英語大辭典》(英英、英漢雙解)p1721用country(國家)、nation(國家)解釋state，證明 state應該翻譯成“邦”、“國”，不應該翻譯成“州”。[2]

《朗文當代英語大辭典》（說：

（1）state is a country considered as a political organization[2]1712(邦、國的意思是作為政治組織的國家——筆者譯)

（2）Most former colonies have become selfgoverning states[2]1712(大部分從前的殖民地現在都變成了自治的國家——雙解詞典譯文)

（3）France is one of the member states of EU.[2]1712(法國是歐盟成員國之一——雙解詞典譯文)

（4）state is any of the smaller partly selfgoverning areas making up certain nations suc as the fifty states of the US[2]1712(“邦”、“國”是由較小的、部分自治的、構成若干邦國的區域，如美國 50個邦國那樣的區域——筆者譯)

簡而言之，根據《朗文當代英語大辭典》的解釋，state相當于漢語的“邦國”，不能翻譯成“州”，漢語州沒有“邦國”的詞義。

3.《牛津現代英漢雙解詞典》p1732用state 作為republic（共和國）的同義詞證明state應該翻譯成“邦國”，而不是“州”。

《牛津現代英漢雙解詞典》說：

republic a state in which supreme power is held by the people or their elected represantatives or by an elected or nominated president not by a monarch etc.[1]2536(共和國是一個國家，最高權力由人民或者人民選舉的代表或者選舉的或者任命的總統掌握——筆者譯)

4.《韋氏高階美語英漢雙解詞典》也用用state作為republic（共和國）的同義詞證明state應該翻譯成“邦國”，而不是“州”。

《韋氏高階美語英漢雙解詞典》說[3]：

（1）republic is a state which is governed by represantatives who are chosen by citizens in elections(共和國是由選舉中選出的國民代表掌握政權的國家——筆者譯)

（2）republic is a state in which the head is not a monarch and usually an selected president(共和國是一個國家，國家的首腦不是君主而是選舉產生的總統——筆者譯)

5.《新牛津英漢雙解大詞典》p2078將 state作為nation(國家)的同義詞證明state應該翻譯成邦國，而不是“州”。

state的詞條說：“a nation or territory considered as an organized political community under one government”[4]（邦國是一個國家或者是一個政府領導下被視為有組織的整體的領土——筆者譯）

上面英語原文詞典對state的解釋是“國”或者“領土”，唯一的例子是“the State of Israel 以色列國。”

《新牛津英漢雙解大詞典》第2312頁在解釋The United States的時候說“the United States (縮略詞：US)……全稱The United States of America. the US is a federal republic comprising fifty states”[4]2312(“合眾國”縮略為 US，全稱是“美利堅合眾國”。美國是一個包括50個國家的聯邦共和國。——筆者譯)

“the US is a federal republic comprising fifty states”的通常翻譯一定是“美國是一個包括 50個州的聯邦共和國。”，而筆者認為這個譯文是錯誤的；筆者的譯文是“美國是一個包括 50個邦國的聯邦共和國。”。筆者的第二個譯文是“美國是一個包括50個邦的聯邦共和國。”。

the United States of America(“美利堅合眾國”)中的America是廣義，美國一建國就想使自己在美洲（America）居于統治地位，因此，將“America（美洲）”的名稱作為自己的廣義名稱。后來“America（美洲）”演變為“America（美國）”。

Federal的漢語譯文是“聯邦”；Federal（“聯邦”）的含義是，一個大國家中的多個小國家的聯合體；每一個小國家叫做“邦”，多個小國（即邦）的聯合體稱之為“聯邦”。根據federal的詞義推論出state的含義是“國家”或者“邦”。漢語“國家”和“邦”是同義詞。

漢語《新華詞典》p13解析漢字“邦”說：“邦，指國家。”[5]

四、漢語“州“的含義——“州”不是“國”

漢語“州”是什么含義呢？

《新漢英詞典》p644說：州 （1）舊時的一個行政區劃。多用于地名，如杭州、柳州。（2）一種民族自治行政區劃單位。[6]

《現代漢語詞典》第 1635頁載：（1）舊時的一個行政區劃，所轄地區的大小歷代不同，現在這名稱還保留在地名里，如蘇州、德州。（2）指自治州。[7]

漢語“國”是不是“州”？

漢語很早就有“州”，如“衡州”、“永州”，但是中國人把美國的fifty states中的state翻譯成“州”;美國的“州”與“衡州”、“永州”中的“州”不同，與“國”和“邦”更加不同，人們往往理解為相當于中國現在的“省”，

五、state被譯成“州”是誤譯，建議糾正為“邦”

綜上所述，he United States of America中State的譯文應該翻譯成“國”、“邦”，可是state被錯誤地翻譯和理解成漢語的“省”一樣意義的“州”,“省”一樣意義的“州”是不能組成聯邦國家的，“省”一樣意義的“州”是國家領導下的一級行政單位。

將state翻譯成“州”是錯誤的理據如下。

美國的50個“state邦（國家）”的內涵與中華人民共和國和中華民國中的“共和國、民國(republic)”的內涵是相同的。

美國的50個“邦（國家）”中的英語是state, 中華人民共和國、中華民國中的“共和國”和“民國”的英語是republic。上文已經論述，英語state和 republic是同義詞，在英語原文詞典的解析中，state是republic的代名詞。請再看《韋克皮蒂百科全書》的解析[8]：

“Republic is a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them.”（“共和國(republic)”是一個“國家(state)”，在這個國家中，人民掌握最高權力，最高權力由有選舉權的人民通過直接或者間接投票選出代表執行。——筆者譯）

英語原文詞典講得清清楚楚、明明白白，“共和國(republic)”是一個“國家(state)”。換言之，“共和國(republic)”和“國家(state)”是同義詞。

《韋克皮蒂百科全書》在解析“共和國(republic)”的詞源的時候說：

1604, "state in which supreme power rests in the people," from Fr. république, from L. respublica (abl. republica)

詞源

詞義為“人民掌握最高權力的國家(state)”的“共和國(republic)” 于 1604年，來于法語république和拉丁語 respublica (縮寫詞：republica)——筆者譯。

從詞的詞源解析判斷，“共和國（republic）”和“國家（state）”是同義詞。

上面論述的結論是，“The United States of America（美利堅合眾國）”中State被翻譯成“州”是一個重大誤譯，因為漢語詞典中的“州”沒有“邦國”的詞義，正確譯文是“綁國”、“國家”。

誤譯是錯誤，錯誤就必定產生負面影響，譯界應該重視這一重大誤譯。

我們不能因為誤譯而修改漢語“州”的詞義，原因一是，因為誤譯而修改另一種語言的詞義使之與誤譯一致，違背了學術原則；原因二是，漢語“州”的詞義具有很強的穩定性和排他性，幾千年來它就是中國的一個行政區劃的名字，至今依然用于地名，如杭州、柳州。人們一讀到和聽到“州”就想到中國的一個行政區劃，一讀到和聽到美國的“州”就想到美國的一個類似中國古時候的行政區劃；美國的“州”在漢語中已經使用了幾百年，可是漢語詞典至今沒有它的本來詞義——邦、國；即使修改“州”的詞義使之變成“邦”、“國”，也不可能達到目的。

筆者建議：

1.The United States of America譯成“美利堅合眾國”正確無誤，可以保留，fifty states中的state從“州”糾正為“國”，與“合眾國”保持一致，“紐約州”等州糾正為“紐約國”等國。

2.The United States of America改譯成“美利堅聯邦國”，fifty states中的state從“州”糾正為“邦”，與“聯邦國”保持一致，“紐約州”等州糾正為“紐約邦”等邦。

Onthe Meaning of State in the United States of America

Abstract:The state in the United States of America is equivalent to country,nation or republic in the United States of America. The Chinese translation for the state in the United States of America is perfect but when state is not in the United States of America ,it is mistranslated into zhou which is not equivalent to country,nation or republic. The mistranslation should be corrected.
