What are your achievements in sustainability?
As Malaysia’s premier facility and a key player in the country’s business events industry, the Centre has incorporated environmental sustainability into its business functions and processes. The Centre’s commitment to sustainability commenced in June 2005 when it decided to benchmark the venue’s environmental performance against the criteria set by the United Nation World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) sustainable travel and tourism Green Globe 21 Company Standards (GG21).
The Centre was the first convention centre in Malaysia to be awarded the ISO 14001 : 2004 certification in 2010, and was also the first convention centre in Asia and one of two convention centres worldwide to achieve the prestigious Green Globe Benchmarked(Bronze) status in 2007. In 2010, Green Globe was replaced by the EarthCheck programme and the Centre’s Green Globe status was transferred to EarthCheck Bronze Benchmarked Convention Centre Certification, which the venue has successfully retained for 10 consecutive years (as of 2016).
How do you practice sustainability in everyday business?
On-going sustainability and conservation efforts practiced by the Centre include a 3R (reduce, re-use and recycle) campaign to encourage staff and visitors to reduce wastage, and re-use and recycle where possible and a tree planting initiative under the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia’s (FRIM) Conservation Culture Programme.
The Centre also encourages clients to contribute towards the programme when hosting events at the venue. The Centre also implements environmentally-friendly practices such as use of biodegradable cleaning products, minimal use of pesticides and energy saving systems.

In addition, the Centre launched a Household Hazardous Waste(HHW) Campaign in 2014 to increase public awareness of the safe disposal of HHW - household products that contain potentially hazardous ingredients that require special care when it comes to disposal such as used batteries, light bulbs and electronic/electrical devices.
The Centre also collects environmental data on monthly basis and produces regular performance reports to monitor and optimise its energy efficiency, water usage and waste reduction programmes and initiatives. Additionally, the Centre participates in AEG 1EARTH, AEG Ogden’s corporate environmental sustainability programme.
