Analysis of China’s export to the U.S.of textile and apparel in 2016

According to statistics of China Custom， Chinas accumulated exports of textile and apparel to the United States amounted to 45.025 billion dollars， down by 5.69%. Among them， export of textiles was 11.699 billion dollars， decreasing by 2.45%， and export of apparel was 33.326 billion dollars， a fall of 6.78%. The main features are as follows.

The fall of price dragged down the export of chemical fiber yarn

In 2016， Chinas exports of yarn to the United States reached 306 million kilograms， a year-on-year increase by 1.81%； export amount registered 504 million dollars， a fall of 2.78% and export unit price decreased by 4.51%， which was mainly affected by the falling price of chemical fiber yarn. The export volume of chemical fiber yarn was 147 million kg， up by 6.46%； export amount was 309 million dollars， down by 4.07%， and average unit price fell by 9.89%. Export volume of cotton yarn amounted to 2.1161 million kg， a significant increase of 33.69%； export amount up by 27.05% and export unit price down by 4.96%. The export volume of other yarns registered to 156 million kg， down by 2.28%； export amount of 162 million dollars， a fall of 3.13%. Export volume of silk yarn declined by 9.71%， but the average unit price significantly increased by 78.64%， promoting the export amount increased by 61.28%. Export of wool yarn greatly declined by 42.57%，while unit price increased by 68.77%.

cotton exports with a dismal performance

In 2016， Chinas exports of fabrics to the United States reached 1.398 billion meters， a year-on-year decline of 2.68%， and export amount amount- ed to 1.789 billion dollars， falling by 8.87%. Among them， cotton export volume was 213 million meters， a drop of 17.23%， and export amount was 251 million dollars， a large decline of 5.56%， which is affected by the decline of unit price with the value of 13.21%. Export volume of other fabrics reached 757 million meters， a fall of 3.57%， and export amount registered 1.048 billion dollars， a year-on-year decline of 4.42%.

The unit price of manufactured goods showed a significant decline

In 2016， Chinas exports of manufactured goods amounted to $9.405 billion， down by 1.11%， and unit price fell by 12.07%. Among them， exports of home textile reached $4.655 billion， falling by 1.50%， and average price decreased by 10.95%. Export volume of non-woven reached 19，956 tons， a year-on-year increase of 1.66%， and export amount was 623 million dollars， a fall of 6.14%， also the unit price decreased by 7.67%. Export amount of other manufactured goods reached 3.027 billion dollars， down by 1.26% and average unit price dropped by 17.53%.

The decline of woven garments less than the knitted garments

Chinas exports of garments to the U.S. Reached $33.326 billion， and export volume of 14.511 billion articles （suits）， a slight decline of 0.06%.

Exports of knitted garments registered 3.766 billion articles （suits）， a year-on-year decline of 1.28%， and export amount was $14.265 billion， declining by 7.75%， as well as average unit price was 3.79 dollars / article （suit）. Among them， knitted garments made of chemical fiber was the only commodities to realize the increase in export volume， with a year-on-year increase of 3.18%， while export amount was $6.983 billion， a fall of 3.55%； cotton knitted garments performed badly， with export amount of $5.408 billion， a fall of 13.30% and export volume decreasing by 7.50%； other knitted garments suffered a double decline both in volume and amount， with export amount of 1.454 billion dollars， a fall of 5.23% and export volume down by 0.36%.

Exports of woven garments amounted to 2.844 billion articles （suits）， a fall of 3.33%， and export amount was $13.827 billion， down by 4.07%， as well as average unit price was $4.86 per article （suit）. Among them， export volume of cotton woven garments increased by 2.15%， and export volume amounted to $5.677 billion， a fall of 1.99%； export amount of woven garments made of chemical fiber reached $6.112 billion， dropping by 4.67%， but the average unit price increased by 0.88% year on year.

processing trade dragged down the overall level of foreign trade

In 2016， Chinas general trade to the U.S. accounted for 80.04% of total textile apparel trade， still in the absolute dominant position， but fell by 4.36%， with the export amount of $36.039 billion and export volume up by 3.92%. Processing trade was in a poor performance， with export amount of $7.471 billion， down by 13.07%， and export volume down by 13.37%， which was negative to our export to the U.S..

The number of enterprises to export to the U.S. was still increasing

In 2016， there were 33，198 enterprises engaged in export trade of textile and apparel to the U.S.， increasing by 2.31% year on year， among which private enterprises were still in dominated position， reaching to 26，320， up by 4.37%. Meanwhile， export volume of private enterprises was still increasing， an increase of 8.68%， and export amount amounted to $25.253 billion， a slight drop of 1.18 percentage points. The state-owned enterprises and foreign-funded enterprises made a bad performance， dropping in export volume and export amount， as well as the number of enterprises. Among them， the state-owned enterprises suffered decline in export volume and export amount by 9.50% and 12.94% respectively， and the number of enterprises decreased by 5.80% only to 5，730.

Export to the U.S. declined of main provinces and cities

From the main export provinces and cities， the top five ones were still Jiangsu， Zhejiang， Guangdong， Shanghai and Shandong， all of which suffered decline in export volume， with the decline of 1.32%， 4.78%， 10.59%， 9.22% and 3.05% respectively. While the number of export enterprises of Jiangsu， Zhejiang and Guangdong has increased， with the value of 5.12%， 2.57% and 0.08%. A new force of Jiangxi has risen with export volume up by 11.96%， and enterprises up by 24.71%， making it rank the seventh and the only province to realize the increase in export amount in the top ten ones.
