Today, I fear for the future of our forests and the people in my country. I worry about people like my mother, Florence, a1)peasant farmerwho is no longer sure about when to plant her corn because of the changing seasons and land.

Six years ago, we lost 102)hectaresof corn. Now our land lackswindbreakstoprotectour cropsfrom3)hail storms. My life journey has led me to ask: How might we keep future generations of Ugandans from repeating our mistakes?

This question inspired me to start Tree Adoption Uganda, or TAU in 2012. TAU is an organization that creates new forests andfocuses on4)conservingwhat’s left of our precious5)natural ecosystems.

In 2014, I started the Tree Capital program within TAU to provide6)start-up capitalto7)unemployedyoung people who plant trees and learn about how to best protect our country’s forests.

Our Tree Capital program helps people like Nasa, a 20-year-old single mother who grew up in a poor farming community. Nasa dreamed of8)foundinga successful9)agribusinessin Uganda.

As soon as the team from TAU and I met Nasa, we began searching for a way to help. We worked with her to found a fruit tree10)nurseryin her backyard, andequippedherwiththe tools to care for it. As the trees grew, we secured funds from environmentally responsible companies to buy back the trees from her nursery. Nasa used this11)earnedmoney to plant more trees on her farmland, which are used as windbreaks to protect her farm.

Because of TAU, Nasa can now fully support her children, and is well on her way to realizing her dream of12)runninga successful agribusiness.

Nasa and other people like her are helping regrow Uganda’s forests. Our Tree Capital program isn’t only supporting Ugandan youth, it’s also teaching a new generation the importance ofenvironmental responsibility. Our goal is to support the next generation and to ensure a13)sustainablefuture for our forests.

For the sake of my mother’s community and that of many other14)threatenedcommunities, I urge us all to be leaders intaking action againstclimate change. Planting a single tree may seem like a small action with little15)impact, but without that action, we might never enjoy the full forest.
