With 1.2 million residents the South Australian city of Adelaide offers sophistication and style. The coastal capital is big enough to keep inquisitive visitors busy for weeks but with a city centre that's small enough to explore on foot.

Colonel William Light founded Adelaide in 1836, and a year later he mapped out a 'one square mile' city centre of broad streets surrounded by parklands. Despite the city's growth, the parklands remain intact to provide one of the world's great 'urban green lungs'. The chosen site was enhanced by a river that ran through it and known to the locals as Karrawirra Parri but later renamed Torrens River.

These parklands lining the Torrens River and parts of the inner city have enthralled many. In his book Down Under, Bill Bryson suggested that it was possible to step out of the city from time-to-time to get a breath of fresh air in a spacious green setting. For other noted writers like Mark Twain who visited in 1895, everything was 'delightfully exotic, except the grass. I had seen grass before.' However, Twain was fascinated by the native vegetation surrounding the city centre.

Green Lungs

Mature trees shade these green precincts plus the adjoining Adelaide Botanic Gardens and the University of Adelaide which are all within easy reach of the centre. Many city workers enjoy their lunch here in the fresh air and sunshine. Next to the gardens is the Adelaide Zoo with its collection of iconic Australian animals and Panda Bears.

Known as the Riverbank Precinct, a continuous strip of parkland lines the banks of the Torrens River and includes the famous Adelaide Oval (home of cricket and Australian Rules football) and Memorial Drive Tennis Club before extending into the the North Adelaide Golf Club.

There's probably no other city that can boast a 54-hole public golf course within a 15-minute walk from the city centre. Located next to the northern banks of the Torrens River this leafy course has spectacular city skyline views. Mature gum, fi g and pine trees line the fairways that cover 83 hectares of prime city land. Leading international golfer Adam Scott who hails from Adelaide played his fi rst game of golf here with his father.

Next year, golf takes centre stage from 16th to 19th February when the ISPC Handa Women's Australian Open will attract some of the world's leading female golfers to the Royal Adelaide Golf Club, including world number one Lydia Ko and defending champion Haru Nomura.

Festive City & Festive Foods

In 1960, Adelaide became a centre for culture when it staged Australia's pre-eminent cultural event, the Adelaide Festival. Now joined by the Adelaide Fringe held in the fi rst quarter of each year (February 17 to March 19 for the Fringe and March 3 to 19, 2017 for the Adelaide Festival) they are two of the world's leading dance, art, music and literature festivals.

Who doesn't enjoy sampling new food and produce when travelling? And South Australia is best experienced with a plate and a wine glass as some 200 wineries are within a one-hour's drive of Adelaide.

One of Australia's premier food festivals is Tasting Australia staged annually and from 30 April to 7 May, 2017. This attracts global food connoisseurs for the ultimate wine and food indulgence. Interactive events such as Feast for the Senses, celebrity lunches and dinners and, Kids in the Kitchen are some of the festival highlights.

There are several food precincts in the city with Gouger Street, the eastern end of Rundle Street, North Adelaide and Norwood being the best places to start indulging. Asian restaurants dominate the many that are situated along Gouger Street. Adelaide's bustling Central Market also opens onto Gouger Street with the best time to visit on Saturday morning when the place is jammed pack with locals stocking up on supplies. It fi rst opened 145 years ago and now 70 stallholders offer fresh produce including cheeses, fruits, pastries and meats.

Food trucks have taken to the city streets too and small laneways have become the place to open quirky bars and cafés with Peel and Leigh Streets being the places to head to.

Wine Country

Adelaide is surrounded by the Adelaide Hills and beyond them are several leading destinations including the Barossa and Clare Valley and its often wine, food and relaxation that attracts tourists. Wine stars like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Chardonnay are supported by a score of other grape varieties.

A substantial number of pioneer settlers to the state originated from Germany and they set up farms in the now famous Barossa agricultural region. Sampling local produce is best done at the Saturday morning Barossa Farmers Market in Angaston where 50 producers sell direct to passionate local and visiting foodies.

About 50% of Australia's annual wine production originates from the Barossa with wineries such as Jacob's Creek, Orlando, Seppeltsfi eld and Torbreck having ingrained themselves on the palates of global wine connoisseurs. These well-established wineries are complemented by a new breed of innovative young winemakers who are doing things with grapes that many Old World winemakers only dream of.

The Barossa is renowned for its big Shiraz style with the world's oldest vines of over 150 years being planted at Langmeil, Turkey Flat, Bethany and St. Hallett wineries. It's possible to sample wines, dine in wonderful on-winery restaurants and others in towns in the valley, join masterclass wine tastings of iconic wines such as Grange and learn how to blend wines like GSM (Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre) at Penfolds and take the fruits of your labour home to impress your friends. Seppeltsfi eld Winery can also arrange for a fortifi ed wine tasting to match your birth year.

Nearby, the town of Hahndorf is another epicentre of Germanic heritage. Its popularity has turned the once sleepy village into a popular tourist town with shops, galleries and produce outlets showcasing the region's heritage. Visit the famous Beerenberg Strawberry Farm to buy jams and conserves or participate in a cheese-making class at Udder Delights.

The Coast & Kangaroo Island

When the mercury rises the people of Adelaide head to beaches like Glenelg that are often located on the 15km-long tramline. As well as enjoying the warm sand, adventurous visitors can swim with the friendly dolphins just offshore. Temptation Sailing provides all the necessary equipment including a wetsuit for enjoying this close encounter with wild marine creatures.

Head south of Adelaide to Port Willunga to dine at the Star of Greece Café perched on the cliff top overlooking the Gulf of St. Vincent and admire the dramatic sunsets for which the region is famous. Local McLaren Vale wines like those from Chapel Hill, Coriole, d'Arenberg, Maxwell Wines, Rosemount Estate and Wirra Wirra feature on the wine lists of the leading restaurants here.

While there's a car ferry across St. Vincent Gulf most visitors will fl y to Kangaroo Island to explore its natural wonders and sample some wonderfully fresh produce. A must-try is the seafood.

New Zealand fur seals migrate to Kangaroo Island to entertain visitors who can get quite close to these playful and fascinating marine creatures at Seal Bay on the island's southern coastline. While the seals are the main wildlife attraction there are also kangaroos and koalas. Nearby, Vivonne Bay is ranked as one of Australia's most picturesque beaches with white sands and turquoise waters.

巴羅莎以西拉酒聞名，本地的藍(lán)邁、紅頂鸛等酒莊擁有樹齡 150 年以上的葡萄樹。游客可去餐廳品酒，或參加名酒品鑒會(huì)，學(xué)學(xué)如何混釀葡萄酒，把親釀的美酒贈(zèng)予朋友，讓他們刮目相看。

在阿德萊德的海灘，不僅可以欣賞怡人風(fēng)光，還有機(jī)會(huì)與招人喜歡的海豚一道游泳。

很多游客會(huì)前往袋鼠島探訪自然景觀，與活潑可愛的海豹來一次親密接觸。除了海豹，袋鼠島還有袋鼠和考拉。不遠(yuǎn)處的維逢灣有澳洲最美沙灘，那兒的白沙柔軟細(xì)膩，海水湛藍(lán)澄澈。
