A land free from destruction, plus wealth, natural resources, and labor supply—all these were important 21 in helping England to become the center for the Industrial Revolution. 22 they were not enough. Something 23was needed to start the industrial process. That“something special”was men—24individuals who could invent machines, find new sources of power, and establish business organizations to reshape society.

The men who 25 the machines of the Industrial Revolution came from many backgrounds and many occupations. Many of them were26inventors than scientists. A man who is a27scientist is primarily interested in doing his research accurately. He is not necessarily working 28 that his findings can be used.

An inventor or one interested in applied science is 29 trying to make something that has a concrete use. He may try to solve a problem by using the theories 30 science or by experimenting through trial and error. Regardless of his method,he is working to obtain a 31 result: the construction of a harvesting machine, the burning of a light bulb,or one of 32 other objectives.

Most of the people who33 the machines of the Industrial Revolution were inventors, not trained scientists. A few were both scientists and inventors. Even those who had 34 or no training in science might not have made their inventions 35 a groundwork had not been laid by scientists years before.

Passage One

Have you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly?Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it?Are you afraid to ask a boy(girl)for a date?

Many people are afraid to assert themselves(insist upon their own rights). Dr. Robert Alberti, author of Stand Up,Speak Out,and Talk Back, thinks it’s because their self-esteem is low.“Our whole set-up makes people doubt themselves.”says Alberti.“There’s always a‘superior’around a parent,a teacher,a boss who‘knows better’”.

But Alberti and other scientists are doing something to help people to assert themselves. They offer“as-sertiveness training”courses(AT). In the AT courses people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so. They learn to be aggressive without hurting other people.

In one way, learning to speak out is to overcome fear. A group taking an AT course will help the timid person to lose his fear. But AT uses an even stronger motive—the need to share. The timid person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels. AT says you can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do,you can learn to speak out.

Passage Two

Lawn tennis is a good sport, being based in the ancient game of court tennis, which probably came up in Egypt or Persia some 2,500 years ago. Major Walter Wingfield thought that something like court tennis could be played outdoors on lawns, and in Dember 1873,he introduced his new game, which he called Sphairistike,at a lawn party in Wales. The sport became popular very rapidly, but the strange, difficult name disappeared almost at once, being replaced by the very simple and logical term“l(fā)awn tennis”.

By 1874 the game was being played by British soldiers in Bermuda, and in the early months of that year a young lady named Mary Outerbridge returned from Bermuda to New York, bringing with her the equipment necessary to play the new game. With the help of one of her brothers, she laid out a court on the grounds of Staten Island Cricket and Baseball Club, and there,in the spring of 1874,Miss Outerbridge and some of her friends played the first game of lawn tennis in the United States.

Do not open any files attached to an e-mail from an unknown, suspicious or untrustworthy source.

Do not open any files attached to an e-mail unless you know what it is,even if it appears to come from a dear friend or someone you know. Some viruses can replicate themselves and spread through e-mail. Better be safe that sorry and confirm that they really sent it.

If you are uncertain, don’t download the file at all or download the file to a floppy(軟盤)and test it with your own anti- virus software.

Update your anti-virus software regularly. Over 500 viruses are discovered each month,so you’ll want to be protected. These updates should be at least the products virus signature files. You may also need to up-date the product’s scanning engine as well.

Back up(備份)your files on a regular basis. If a virus destroys your files,at least you can replace them with your backup copy. You should store your backup copy in a separate location from your work files, one that is preferably not on your computer.
