From close by, on the other side of the rock in fact, he heard a1)snore…then a loud SNORT.And he knew that snort all too well. He looked round, and yes…there to his2)horrorsat his enemy, pirate Jake! Then Pugwash got another surprise…Jake was smiling!
At first Jake seemed friendly. He told Pugwash how he too had been3)sweptaway by the storm and cast up on the island.
And very soon the two pirates were talking just like old friends.
Pugwash even shared his last bit of chocolate with his old enemy.
At least he pretended it was his last piece of chocolate, and Jake pretended that he believed him!
Then, far away they saw a ship. Both pirates were very excited. “With the two of us it’ll be easy to4)attracttheir attention! Take your jacket off!”
Jake stood on the rock and Pugwash climbed on to his shoulders and waved his coat5)wildly.
And the ship seemed to be getting closer…and closer…and closer, althoughin the early morning light it was dif ficult to be very sure.
Captain Pugwash was beginning to feel rather6)dizzyso finally both pirates stood hand in hand on their little island and shoutedfor all they were worth.
Soon the ship was so close that Jake was very happy and shouted, “It’s my ship and my7)shipmatescome to save me!”
“And me too?” asked Pugwash8)nervously.
“Save you?” said Jake, “It’s me that’s for saving and you that’s for9)marooningon this island, aharrh!”
By this time Jake’s pirates hadarrivedin their long-boat. And a
moment later Jake
was being helped10)aboard.
“B-b-but you can’t leave me here!” cried Pugwash.
But Jake was gone.
“Come back! Come BACK!”shouted Captain Pugwash. But Jake and his shipmates only laughed at him. And very soon the Captain couldn’t even hear that.(to be continued…)

Although/Though they are very poor, they have enough to eat.
Although (Though) it was very cold, (yet) he went out without an overcoat.=It was very cold, but he went out without an overcoat.
2.arrive為不及物動詞,若其后接賓語,需與at或in連用,其中“到達(dá)較大的地方”用arrive in,“到達(dá)較小的場所或地方”則用arrive at;其后接地點(diǎn)副詞here、there和home時(shí),則不需要用介詞。
The plane will arrive at the airport soon.
When did you arrive in Beijing?
They arrived at the railway station too late.
They’re arriving here tomorrow.
