What if one dayFacebook,Twitterand Instant Messenger just weren’t there?

Provost學院院長Eric Darr of Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Pennsylvania tells NPR’s(National Public Radio)Guy Raz that he wanted his students to not only think about this question, but live it.

“Often there are behaviors, habits and ways we use technology that we may ourselves not even be able to express clearly because wearenotaware ofthem,”Darr says.

So this week,Darr willenforce強制執行a campus-wide social media cutoff—noFacebook,noTwitter,no instant messaging—nothing.

Social Media Exile

“Access to these popular social media toolswill be blocked from campus computers through the week. This is not a disciplinary紀律上的exercise,” Darr says,“but anacademicone. At the end of the week, students willwrite reflective essaysabout their time without social media.”

Three Harrisburg University students,Ashley Harris,Gio Acosta and Oluyemi Afuape, volunteered todiscuss the experiment, and itturned outthey have mixed feelings.

Afuape isn’t a bigfanofFacebook, and says he doesn’t expect to bechallengedby the cutoff. But Harris is going tohave a hard timenot posting her whereabouts行蹤to friends.

“My biggest problem is not being able to find people,”Harris says, “because I useFacebookandTwitter to find people at school,to see where they’re.”

Even before hearing about the cutoff,Acosta found it necessary to cut himself off the constant social media chatter.

“I had my phone set to receiveFacebook, texts, tweets信息and ring,so I had toturnthatoffbetween 3 and 6 in the morning so that I can actually sleep during that time.” Acosta says, “If you don’tset the limits,it’s a 24-hour thing.”

Hope From “The Post-Facebook Generation”

Outspokensocial media critic批評家Jaron Lanier(who was also named one ofTimemagazine’s100 most influential people of the year)says Harrisburg University’s experiment may be tooextreme. He would prefer that studentsdonate a penny to charityeverytime they access social media.

“Because that would create awareness, they would be aware of how much they were doing,” Lanier says, “making the use of it into something that’s more conscious and more considered.”

Lanier is mainly worried that social media creates superficial表面的tiesrather than lasting friendship. But he says heis optimistic about“the Post-Facebookgeneration”—teenagers he hears from in high schools who don’t identify withFacebook.

“No,we areindividuals;we invent ourselves;we’re not going to have some third-party advertising business define us.We invent our own taste.Furthermore,we decide what friendship means.”

Even before hearing about the cutoff,Acosta found it necessary to cut himself off the constant social media chatter.

find it necessary to cut...構成的是 “find+it+adj.+to do”結構,其中 it做形式賓語,后面動詞不定式為真正的賓語。這部分意為“至在聽到這一消息之前,Acosta就覺得有必要停止社交媒體上的喋喋不休”。

The French government is to ban students from using mobile phones in the country primary, junior and middle schools. The French education minister said the measure would come into effect from the start of the next school year in September 2018.However,more senior students in China have different opinions towards this matter, thinkingthat the learning style is changing with the development of technology. It is the Internet that can help us study efficiently.

Some students think that in future,Wi-Fi can be put on campus so that students can have access to knowledge at any time.Besides, they can broadcast school events in a convenient way. However, opponents argue that the Internet is filled with much harmful information, bringing about potential risks to the students lacking self-control.There’s high possibility that students will be distracted.Lastly,we still have a long way to go for the regulation required, such as forbidding playing games at night.
