When I was growing up, I do not recall 1 (hear) the words “I love you” from my father. When your father never says 2 (they) to you when you are a child, it gets tougher and tougher for him 3 (say) those words as he gets 4 (old). To tell the truth, I could not honestly remember 5 I had last said those words to him, either. I decided to set my ego (自我) aside and make the first move. After some 6 (hesitate), in our next phone conversation I blurted out (脫口說出) the words, “Dad… I love you!”

There was a silence at the other end and he 7 (awkward) replied, “Well, same back at you!”

I laughed and said, “Dad, I know you love me, and when you are ready, I know you will say what you want to say.”

A few weeks later, Dad concluded our phone conversation 8 the words, “Paul, I love you.” I was at work during this conversation and the tears were rolling down my cheeks 9 I finally “heard” the love. As we both sat there in tears we 10 (realize) that this special moment had taken our father-son relationship to a new level.

As a working mom with three young sons, 1 (keep) the house clean is a big challenge. Though we clean the house every week, one hour later after cleaning our bedrooms and bathrooms are back to their 2 (mess) look. When asked, my boys will help neaten their room, clear their plates from the table and pick up their school junk. But I need to remind them 3 it again and again.

If I don’t remind them, I will step over all the things that make my house look like a garbage can. This is quite 4 change from my pre-kid years when I never 5 (leave) any waste in the house. 6 seems that I cannot get these days back again at my own house.

When last week I found a program 7 (call) “Share a Healthy Habit” on a newspaper, I saw a great chance to engage 8 (I) sons in cleaning chores. Why not encourage these behaviors during the summer, while school is out and their life is 9 (relax)?

The goal for my boys is 10 (clean) their own dorm room themselves when they are free. The rewards for cleaning habits start young, so I need to start my plan as soon as possible.

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously (可憐地) for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed 1 (cover) up anyway; it just wasn’t worth saving the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel (鏟) and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized 2 was happening and cried horribly. Then, 3 everyone’s amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads 4 (late), the farmer finally looked down the well. He was 5 (astonish) at what he saw. With each shovel of what hit his back, the donkey was doing something 6 (amaze). He would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey 7 (step) up over the edge of the well and 8 (happy) ran off!

Each of our troubles 9 (be) a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not giving 10 ! Shake it off and take a step up.

Some people are right-handed and some are left-handed. No one knows the reason 1 a person becomes right-handed or left-handed. It’s not true that it is caused by the way in which his parents educate him. 2 other words, a person is born to be right-handed or left-handed. Moreover, the left-handed and the right-handed think 3 (different). Having to use the hand you’re not used to can be very 4 (upset).

One day I tried an experiment: changing hands 5 eating rice with chopsticks. Being a right-hander, I hoped it would not be too hard for me 6 (take) the food with my left hand. Soon after I started, I 7 (realize) I didn’t know what I was doing. So I moved in front of a big mirror. Looking at 8 (I) in the mirror, I found I looked like a man who had never used chopsticks before.

My experience shows that 9 (force) to use the hand one is not used to affects a person’s mind. So we should not try to change a left-hander to a right-hander. Some people still think being left-handed is bad, but luckily this idea is 10 (change).

I was once asked to deliver a speech 1 (title) “A Real Test in My Life” before the whole class. Just imagine how 2

(terrible) shy I was the moment I thought of that with so many eyes fixed upon me. I had no other 3 (choose), though. First I was to draft the speech and that was just a piece of cake for me. But the hard part 4 (lie) in my oral presentation; I had to give the speech 5 my memory. A real trial began when I stood on the platform with my legs 6 (tremble) and my mind blank. How much time had passed by, I didn’t know. My listeners were still waiting. Gradually I found myself back, giving out my speech with difficulty. Finally I finished. After 7 seemed to be a hundred years, I found my audience applauding. I made it! From then on, my fear of 8 (talk) before an audience disappeared. Actually with my confidence building up, I now turn out

9 (be) a great speaker. Looking back, I know the greatest difficulty on our way to success is our fear; overcome it, 10 we will be able to achieve our goals.

One hot summer day, my family spent our vacation in Hawaii, 1 (enjoy) the beaches. Both of my daughters played all day in a boat. Later the little one got tired. Therefore, I took her to our spot on the sand as my elder girl continued to play in the boat. But the boat with my elder daughter in it was 2 (gradual) moving far out from the shore. I called to her to come closer to the shore and she seemed 3 (frighten).

I stood far out in the water, shouting 4 (instruct) to her. Fortunately, some teenagers in a boat not far from her noticed what was happening and started 5 (head) her way immediately.

I’m not a good swimmer but I determined to have 6 try. I continued swimming until I no longer knew 7 could feel that I had legs, but I always kept my eyes on her. 8 (Help) by the teenagers, I finally made my way back pulling her and calming her.

I’ve learned 9 the experience maybe we think we are not strong enough sometimes, but if we trust ourselves enough and take the 10 (one) attempt, we’ll have all the strength we need.
